Farmers Only Farmer's Market: The Devin Mesoraco conundrum
The last Farmer's Market before the draft tonight, so let's make it count.
UPDATE from 'creds. BK and I need to communicate better. I thought I had this morning's FO so I wrote out a whole bunch of stuff, then realized he did a bang up job already so no need for mine. Still, I put together a little chart of some players at AAA next to guys they could potentially replace on the big club. I understand hitting in AAA is quite different from hitting in the bigs, but still. The comparisons are interesting.

Please understand, I'm not suggesting that Rolen or Hanigan be dispensed with. More than anything else, I just want to see these AAA guys given a shot. The argument that you don't want too many rookies or new faces in the middle of a pennant race is quickly losing merit as the Reds stay near .500 and lose more and more ground to the Cardinals and Brewers. Maybe it's time for Walt to get creative. Clearly Devin Mesoraco is ready to try hitting in the big leagues. Perhaps trading Ramon Hernandez to a team desperate for catching could bring back a decent starter, or at the very least a good reliever, and Devin can start 3 of 5 days. Perhaps Todd Frazier or Juan Francisco is called up and splits time somewhat evenly with Scott Rolen, who is making it look more and more like his second half 2010 performance is his true ability level. Or maybe Zack Cozart just replaces one of the current short stops. No need to get creative there. Also, Fred Lewis has done little to impress. Yonder Alonso may be a butcher in left field but he can probably hit better than every current Reds outfielder not named Jay.
Finally, the obvious thing to mention is that the hitting hasn't really been the problem. The team sports one of the top offenses in the NL. The pitching has been terrible, but with no easy or obvious solutions, it seems to make sense to build the best lineup possible. I'm not sure the current lineup qualifies as that.
OK, post-jack over. On to BK's prospects!
Yonder Alonso
In his second season in Louisville, Yonder is putting up the numbers that we expected from him all along. He's hitting .324 on the season, and has an OPS of 1.039 in his last 10 games. Worst case right now, he's Jonny Gomes with a better bat, right?
Brad Boxberger
Again? Yes, again. 0.87 ERA in his last 10 games, with 16 strikeouts and 2 walks in that span. That's strong. He's the closer in Carolina right now, and I don't see why that couldn't carry over to Louisville as soon as possible.
Devin Mesoraco
With all of the strong hitters on this Louisville club right now, there's nobody hotter than Meso-rake-o right now. In his last 10 games, he's sporting a .472/.558/.778 line, good for an absurd 1.336 OPS. Unfortunately for him, there's no rush to get him up here with two solid big league catchers, but it looks like he could be ready to take the next step if needed. If you're Walt, do you try to make room for him at the big league level (where you think he could help), or let him marinate a bit more in Louisville?
Mike Costanzo
WIth a .411 OPS in the last 10 games, the man once referred to as Joey Votto's heir apparent has not been good. Maybe he should tell people to start calling him "T-Bone".
Jefry Sierra
Dismal year by one of Dayton's starters. Sitting at the Mendoza line right now, his line has been worse lately to the tune of a .125/.146/.175 in his last 10 games. Who knew that extra 'f' would make so much of a difference?
Chris Valaika
Wasn't expecting him to be here, but here he is. A .550 OPS in his last 10 games, and all of a sudden he's probably well behind Frazier on the utility infield depth chart if needed.
On to the games!
- Louisville swept their weekend winning two home games and one away game against Columbus. On Friday, they won 10-4 behind a good night by Zack Cozart. Coz with 4-for-5 with a double and a homer, which I'll admit wouldn't have looked bad in the Reds lineup over the weekend. Devin Mesoraco hit his 6th homer of the year and drove in 5 runs. Brandon Hynick started the game and gave up 4 runs in 5 innings, and Chris Mobley and Tom Cochran pitched 2 scoreless innings each. On Saturday they won 6-5 in extra innings. Matt Klinker pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up 3 runs. Yonder Alonso and Jeremy Hermida had two hits each, but Brent Clevlen was the offensive star, going 3-for-5 with 2 homers, including the walk-off shot in the 10th. Sunday was even easier, as the Bats enjoyed a comfortable 11-5 win. Scott Carroll went 8 strong innings, only giving up 2 runs. The Bats had 18 hits on offense, led by Juan Francisco's 4-for-6 day (with 3 doubles). 7 of the 9 Bats starters had 2 hits, and Yonder Alonso hit his 7th homer of the year. Not to be outdone, Daniel Dorn hit his 8th, a grand slam. Up next: Doubleheader in Columbus starts at 5:05, with Dontrelle Willis and Daryl Thompson starting the games.
- Carolina lost 2 of 3 over the weekend. They were shut out 1-0 on Friday. They got 4 hits as an offense, but Tim Gustafson had a good outing, giving up only 1 run in 5 innings. They were able to bounce back on Saturday, winning 7-6. Pedro Villarreal actually had his worst outing in a while, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings, but Travis Webb, Donnie Joseph, and Brad Boxberger were great out of the bullpen to preserve the lead. This was Boxy's 3rd save of the year, which tells us that he probably has taken over for DoJo at the back of the Louisville 'pen. Denis Phipps and Kevin Coddington had 3 hits each. Sunday wasn't as positive, as they got killed 10-4. James Skelton and Cody Puckett had two hits each, but the pitching wasn't good enough to come close to winning. Up next: Kyle McCulloch takes on Chattanooga at 7:05.
- Bakersfield also lost 2 of their 3 games over the weekend. They lost 6-4 to Stockton on Friday. Josh Ravin gave up 4 runs in 3 1/3 innings in his start, and Mark Fleury and Josh Fellhauer had two hits each. They won 5-1 on Saturday. Mark Serrano had a good start, giving up no runs on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Henry Rodriguez had 3 hits, including his 8th homer of the year, as did Yasmani Grandal. They lost 6-1 on Sunday to Rancho Cucamonga behind an 8-inning start by workhorse Curtis Partch. The offense was stagnant though, as Chris Richburg and Ryan LaMarre were the only hitters to have multiple hits. Up next: The Blaze take on the Quakes again at 10:30.
- Dayton also lost 2 of their 3 games over the weekend. They won on Friday 8-1 behind a dominant outing by Daniel Corcino. Corcino went 7 innings of shutout ball with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Stud. David Vidal led the way on offense with 3 hits, and Tucker Barnhart and Theo Bowe drove in 3 runs each. Daniel Tuttle got knocked around on Saturday, as the Dragons lost 13-2. Devin Lohman was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. On Sunday, Billy Hamilton was 2-for-4 with his 45th stolen base of the year in a 4-1 loss. Tanner Robles only made it 2 innings in his start, but the bullpen went 7 scoreless. Up next: Dragons are off today.

if the Reds chose to create a trade package featuring a catcher and Alonso
there’s just about nobody they couldn’t have. I’d still like to pester the Giants with a Ramon/Frazier/P deal for Cain, because that’s the crazy off the top of my head trade idea for a starter of the day.

Cozart and Mesoraco each has twenty doubles. Twenty!
The Reds should draft an “f” for Sierra and an “h” for Gomes. Couldn’t hurt.

Thanks for that chart 'creds
It’s astounding that the Reds offense is as good as it is with that much dead weight. Rolen and Hanigan are probably better than they are showing right now, but Gomes, Lewis, and the SS’s are about what we can expect. At some point I feel like the team just has to cut its losses and see what the young guys can do. At the very least, Cozart, Alonso, and Frazier would make the big club look way better than Gomes, Lewis and Renteria are doing right now. Even with some regression, they can’t possibly be any worse than the current production (or lack thereof). The Reds have to find a way to get these guys at-bats at the ML level, sooner rather than later.
If I’m playing GM, I DFA Gomes, put Renteria on the ‘phantom’ DL, and give Cozart and Frazier 15 days of starting 4 games a week. But what the hell do I know? (Rhetorical, but the answer is “nothing”. In Walt and Dusty I trusty)
I'd DFA Gomes and Renteria
And bring up Yonder and Cozart. I’m almost to the point of a DFA for Lewis and bringing up Frazier.

Also
The pitching is turrible, but there are not any good internal options left that aren’t hurt or are not sucking ass. So you can’t afford the offensive dead weight because you are going to have to win a lot of high scoring games.
It's your right and your ability, To become my perfect enemy
Despite all evidence pointing to the contrary
I remain cautiously optimistic that the pitching will eventually be passable. Cueto looks pretty solid right now. The return of a healthy Homer soon will be helpful. AAA helped Voquez last year, if he can come back with control (and the ability to get through the first inning) he will be OK. Arroyo’s back appeared to be fine in his last start. Throw in dashes of Wood and Leake, and that rotation will be good enough (although I am not against trading for some help if we can). And really, the bullpen has been pretty impressive (save for a couple of problems) considering the amount of innings they’ve been forced to throw. I think the poor pitching has been a byproduct of some poor luck and poor preparation, and really should improve from here on out.
This is what I think. (both ritalin and btcoop)
The pitching is going to be better, and there really isn’t a good solution anyway. I’d be all for trading for a #2 type guy, but that guy just isn’t available. If the pitching is going to be bad or average, might as well build the most destructive lineup possible.
In reality, DFAing or replacing 3-4 guys at once is a bit of a stretch, but here’s how I’d play it.
Immediately:—DL Renteria, call up Cozart and have him start almost every game for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, either send him back, or if he has hit at all, either option Janish or DFA Renteria.
—DFA Gomes, call up Frazier. Frazier starts 2-3 days a week at 3B, 1-2 days a week in LF.
In the next 2-3 weeks
If Fred Lewis doesn’t pick it up quick, I DFA his ass to and get Alonso up here.
In the next 4-6 weeks:
I’m actively pursuing a trade of Ramon for a pitcher. I’d either take a AAA starter with real upside or a current MLB reliever who is steady and solid. Then call up Devin and have him split time with Hanny, or even have him start 3 of 5 days.

Yeah I don't see the Giants trading Cain
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."

I can't see them DFAing Gomes and Renteria
Not only are they worried that inexperienced players will struggle, they’re also concerned about depth (in case of injury and such). They can’t stash veterans in Louisville, but they can stash guys who still have options left.
If they do call up Cozart, I would guess they’d send down Janish rather than DFA Renteria. That being the case, it might be better to call up Frazier rather than Yonder, since he can backup at 3B as well as LF (and with Grandpa Rolen on the roster, you’re going to need more than one backup at 3B). Plus, Frazier seems to be viewed as a utility guy, so they won’t mind if he doesn’t start every day.
I don’t mind swapping Janish for Cozart, but if they do that, they should be committed to Cozart. Don’t bench him for Renteria if he has a couple of bad days, or swap him for Janish again if he goes into a 3-week slump. IMO, that would be bad for both the team and the players.
On the whole, though, I think looking to AAA to fix the big league team is a mistake. It’s not the hitting or defense that’s the problem. I’d rather have some stability in the lineup, and definitely think a revolving door on the clubhouse would be a huge mistake.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Hermida is AAA depth in event of a Gomes DFA
If Gomes is such a good clubhouse/team guy, shouldn’t he be willing to accept some time in Louisville? He’s gotta know that he’s hurting the club.
When you come to the fork in the road, take it.
by poojols on Jun 6, 2011 9:35 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The thing about depth is,
I’d almost guarantee that Gomes and Renteria wouldn’t get claimed on waivers. And they’d both probably accept an assignment.
And even if they didn’t, it’s not like there aren’t other guys in AAA who could provide depth. Valaika and Negron are there in the IF, and about 100 guys are there in the OF.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
Campbell played SS one game this weekend
That’s not something that could happen, is it?
When you come to the fork in the road, take it.
by poojols on Jun 6, 2011 9:46 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
sure, but
It’s not like there’s no reason to worry about depth, despite all that. (Who thought we’d miss Danny Ray Herrera? Then there was 2007. The Reds seemed to have more outfielders than any team should ever reasonably need. Then ended up scrounging for the likes of Buck Coats and Jason Ellison.)
I think Gomes probably would accept a minor league assignment, if he cleared waivers. (But would they outright him before Jonny Gomes Bobblehead Day?) Renteria, I’m not so sure about. They could DL him, though I’d really like Cozart to have more than a 2-week tryout if they’re going to call him up.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I don't think anyone misses DRH.
Plus, I think it’s a bit silly to keep inferior options on the team just because you are worried about depth.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
it may be silly
But teams do it all the time.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Looking to AAA to fix the problem we are talking about is what needs to be done
We aren’t talking about replacing a main point in our offense with an unproven youngster, we’re talking about replacing some dead weight backup IF’s and OF’s. These guys are breaking down the door, and the current ML roster isn’t getting the job done (and there is nothing to indicate that they will improve). Also, I’m not suggesting making all of these moves at once, but for now DL Rent for a while to postpone a decision on him, DFA Gomes (he probably even clears waivers and accepts a AAA job), and give Cozart and Frazier a chance. That would be a good start. I think that would improve the club a good deal.
Exactly. We aren't replacing all stars here
We’re talking about replacing 2 OFers who were picked up after being DFA’d by their previous team, and a well-past-his prime SS who can’t hit or field anymore.
The bar for the minor leaguers is pretty low.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
Aside from Mesoraco, these guys are middish- twenties
It’s not like they’d be throwing a bunch of 21 year-olds into a pennant chase. These are seasoned ballplayers.
When you come to the fork in the road, take it.
by poojols on Jun 6, 2011 10:05 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
This is a good point
Also, my theory about BB/K ratio being the biggest predictor of success means most of these guys should be fine. Here are the BB/K ratios of the guys who I think should be called up:
Alonso: .68
Frazier: .46
Cozart: .46
Mesoraco: .65
For reference, the NL average for position players is .49.
Jay Bruce’s AAA ratio was only .31 when he was called up in 2007.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
Just for fun, what is Francisco's?
by Brian B on Jun 6, 2011 2:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
.19 both this year and for his career (541 PAs) in AAA
.17 for his entire minor league career.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
if we're talking about backup IFers and OFers
Then it’s not going to make that much of a difference.
One thing I do think would help would be improving the defense. Kind of a backhand way of improving the pitching. The offense is great, the defense is just okay. And hey, defense is the new OBP! So maybe Heisey instead of Gomes or Lewis?
May have to DFA Gomes just to take him away from Dusty.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
But that's not what we're talking about
We’re talking about getting rid of those guys and bringing up a new starting SS and LFer.
And possibly giving more time to a 3B instead of Rolen.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
it's what ritalin was talking about
I was quoting him.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
No he wasn't
He was talking about getting rid of dead weight. Guys who have been relegated to back up duty, and replacing them with guys who should take over in LF and SS.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
Backup might not have been the best word
since the positions involved (SS and LF) have been platoons for most of the year. My feeling is that the guys currently platooning clearly haven’t been performing well enough, and it might be time to try some of our prospects who are performing well. And to diverge a bit, because I know this is an argument against bringing up young guns, playing time isn’t really a worry if it is managed correctly (start Cozart for a couple of weeks, and get Frazier a few starts a week in LF and 3B). And really, there is an argument against Cozart too, since Janish has been hitting decently the last week or so, but the Gomes problem is becoming inexcusable.
Selectively Endpointing to favor Janish as much as possible (a measly 6 games)
and he’s hitting .381/.409/.381 with 1 walk and 8 singles. That OPS is still below what Cozart has done over the whole season.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
As teh Fay and at least one of his commenters says
It’s a mystery why Heisey hasn’t been given a shot in LF.
I still think Gomes could be a useful player if used properly, but it’s becoming evident that Dusty simply won’t use him properly.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Here's the thing about that.
Gomes does exactly 1 thing well: Hit lefties.
Todd Frazier is OPSing .945 against LHP this season. Plus, he doesn’t suck at defense, and can hit righties a bit too. (oh, and play 3B) There is absolutely nothing that Gomes offers that someone else in the organization doesn’t offer more of.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks

I think teh Fay is reading RR. He notes that Walt is not one for shaking things up, but has some suggestions, just in case. Among them: call up Frazier or Alonso to play LF (nothing on the roster move that would be required), DL Renteria and call up Cozart, move BP to leadoff and drop Stubbs to 5th or 6th (this isn’t something Walt can do, of course), trade one of Hernanigans and call up Mesoraco.
