Farmers Only: Danny Dorn, International League Man of Mystery
- Louisville beat Pawtucket 7-2. Daryl Thompson had a good start, going 7 1/3 innings and giving up 2 runs off of 3 hits with 5 strikeouts. Daniel Dorn homered, his 12th of the year, and he has 3 homers and 9 RBI in his last 4 games. Maybe someone else to start thinking about in LF if this whole Heisey hitting homers thing doesn't work out? If Heisey/Gomes end up getting the majority of the time, isn't Dorn a better bench bat than FLewis is from the left side? He has 12 homers so far and is OPSing .851 playing 1B and LF mostly. He's spent more time in AAA then almost anyone else on the team. Isn't this kind of what we figured he could provide all along? If you're not going to give Yonder or Frazier a shot there, Dorn could at least give you something. I don't think he'd be my first choice there, but you have to wonder if Walt would even consider it. Up next: Scott Carroll takes on Pawtucket at 7:05.
- Carolina's still on their break. They'll resume tonight against Huntsville at 7:15.
- Bakersfield too. They're back in action tonight against Modesto at 10:45.
- Dayton's still on their break, they'll resume Friday.
- Billings lost to Great Falls 7-5. Radhames Quezada got the start and gave up 5 runs in 4 innings of work, and UC product Dan Jensen made his debut and gave up a run in 2 innings of relief work. Pat Quinn pitched a perfect 9th. The offense didn't have a bad night, with Devin Lohman going 3-for-5 with a RBI and Sean Buckley going 2-for-4 with a triple. Up next: The Mustangs take on Great Falls at 9:05 with Kyle McMyne getting the start.
- The AZL Reds were off. They'll take on the AZL Dodgers at 10.

by the way
Louisville SS Zack Cozart went 12 for 5 with 9 HOUR and 44 RBI last night.
He’s now OPSing your mom.

I didn't flinch when I saw HOUR.
I thought you were just trying to be extra surreal:
Cozart had 1,000,000 French Brides and a piece of the Titanic last night!

Is Cozart really on his way?

I'm still surprised
that Danny Dorn gets so little love. Even if he’s terrible on defense and can’t hit lefties to save his life, you’d think someone would be interested. If not the Reds, one of the other 29 teams who all passed on him twice now.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Yeah, I kind of see him as the opposite handed Jonny Gomes.
Maybe if he had a mohawk, an inspiring backstory, and was having sex with Thom Brenneman, he’d get a shot.

I'm kind of taking the other point of view...
If Yonder Alonso is considered the better prospect, has a better long-term bat (and at least a comparable one now), is also left-handed, and also plays a similarly bad left field defense, then why should Dorn be in the discussion at this point? I don’t see him as bringing anything to the table that you wouldn’t already get with Alonso.
but
29 other teams don’t have Alonso.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I'm with you, unless they think he can hit a few bombs in the bigs
and show off his stuff so maybe someone would take him for cash or as a throw-in in a trade. Gotta think someone like the A’s or Mariners or Padres could use a little pop
Joey Votto on Colin Cowherd: "I don’t know who he is"
So if it's true that Cozart is getting the call
does this mean that we can wave “bye bye” to Eddie “Poopstain” Renteria?

teh Fay seems to think that's the roster move
Though they could also send down Janish to “work on his swing.”
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
he could hang on to Dieria
But he’d be blatantly losing the trust of the majority of the fans.

I'm assuming the nostalgic dance technique
and not what he’s been doing in the batter’s box.

hey, Jany was 2 for 4 yesterday
He’s been hitting better lately, and certainly better than Renteria.
But he has options, so they can get him off the 25-man roster without losing him. Not so for Renteria.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I'd much rather keep Janish up and DFA Edgar
Janish has been hitting a bit recently, and if he continues to have a few 2-4 days here and there, then he is what we thought he was, and I think he should stay
Joey Votto on Colin Cowherd: "I don’t know who he is"
I think he'd be more useful than Renteria
He can play 3B, for one thing.
But the Reds may be worried about depth. They’ve run up against that more than once. Most recently, in the pitching department. No matter how much depth you have, it might not be enough. Negron is probably next in line after Cozart, and he’s not a very good SS, with glove or bat.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Negron is a decent SS. Certainly good enough to be a backup/bench guy for a little while
There’s also Valaika, who has played a little bit of SS recently for the Bats. I’m sure they’d be willing to have him back up the middle infield for a while if need be.
In other words, they definitely don’t need to make the cut decision based on depth concerns. I think money concerns have a lot more to do with it.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
As Fay mentioned--wisely I thought--
the money is paid to Renteria either way (sunk cost fallacy comes into play here) and dropping attendance (due to presumably worse play with Renteria in the lineup) might cost the Reds a lot more than the salary they’d eat.
by Cuetotally Amazing on Jun 23, 2011 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Negron would be a huge dropoff
from Janish and Renteria. With all three – Renteria, Janish, and Cozart – having had injury issues this season, the Reds have to have depth on their minds.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Have you seen him play?
He’s a better defensive SS than Renteria. He can also play 3B, 2B, and any OF position. He’d actually be a useful guy to have on the club if he could hit at all.
As it is, I don’t think having him sit the bench for a few weeks would be the end of the world if someone got hurt.
Then there’s Valaika, who they already have shown they are willing to put on the club. He’s certainly a better SS than Cairo or other guys Dusty has put there.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
of course I've seen him play
I can even post some photos if you don’t believe me. :-)
I don’t think he’s a very good SS. Maybe better than Renteria, just because Renteria’s so old now. But he’s barely hitting his weight in AAA.
I think the Reds would want a real SS as a backup (just as they’d want a real CFer as a backup for Stubbs). Someone who could hold down the position for a week or so if the starter can’t go.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Wait, are you saying there's something to be gained by watching a guy play instead of just looking at his stats? ;)

So how do we feel about Cueto's exaggerated delivery?
I loved watching it, but I’m kind of worried he’s gunna hurt himself. Anyone have any insight?
Joey Votto on Colin Cowherd: "I don’t know who he is"
Apparently he's doing it to disguise his pitches
And if I recall, part of his struggles the end of his rookie year and into his second year were that he was tipping his pitches a little bit. If this works, I’m all for it.
Also, I don’t see anything in the new delivery that would make him more injury prone, necessarily.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
good to hear
I just don’t know enough about mechanics to be able to tell. When I hear “changing his delivery” and the manager doesn’t seem to know a lot about it, that’s usually a red flag, but that’s really encouraging. Johnny’s quickly moving up the ladder of UncleWeez’s Favorite Reds

Has there been any word of him tipping pitches since his early years?
I have no problem with the new delivery if it makes it even harder for batters to pick up
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
Cueto on his new delivery
"I’ve been doing it, but I did it a little more tonight," Cueto said through a translator. "I’m trying to make it tough to see the baseball, so I’m hiding it real good now."
Dusty on it:
"I guess that’s Johnny being Johnny. I don’t know where he came up with that, but it sure is working…. I know back in our day, you didn’t like facing a guy who was a little unconventional."
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
and I don't think the Reds coaches would allow one of their young studs
to move to a more risky delivery. I realize deliverys are complex and pitching is an inhuman act and all, but that just doesn’t seem very clever on their part.
I love the new delivery, though, especially the way he rotates his hips so his back is to the batter in the beginning. It reminds me of pulling back a bow before flinging an arrow into the heart of the opposition.

So I like it!
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
C-C-Cueto
I think a couple more starts like this will get him some national attention. If he gets up to 8 or 9 wins by the break I think he will merit serious all-star consideration.
I hope “finally getting it” is as contagious as the plague.

splashing some cold water on the Cueto love
he basically has the same K/BB he’s had through his career. Still k’ing 6-7, still walking 2.7, I’d love for him to bring those walks down, which I think he’s capable of doing.
His BABIP so far is .234, his LOB% is 81.1. He IS getting more ground balls (56%) and he’s giving up less home runs (which I always forget if that’s luck or skill).
So as much fun as we’re having, he’s not a wholly new pitcher. Just a slightly luckier one who’s getting more groundballs. I like him as much as most anyone here, but lets everyone calm down just a bit.

by Cy Schourek on Jun 23, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, but you are diminishing the importance of the groundballs
56% grounders is elite. The best groundball pitchers in the league don’t do better than that. And getting that many grounders is directly responsible for the low home run totals. (and we discussed already that this doesn’t seem to be a fluke. He’s using the 2 seamer a TON more this year)
His BABIP will inevitably go up, but if he keeps the ball in the park and keeps having guys hit the ball on the ground, he’s going to be fine. No one can keep up a sub 2 ERA, but something around 3 seems very possible. I’ll take it.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
just want to add, better here than anywhere
that he’s had hot starts to his year each year he’s been up in Cincy. He can be a bit BP-esque in that.
