Todd Frazier Promoted to Reds?
Via everyone's favorite FSN Statman (link above is to Frazier's agent's tweet, which actually broke the news):
jluckhaupt:
Congrats to Todd Frazier for apparently making the show. May you play so well that you never get sent down again. #Reds
Also from Joel:
Frazier's 650 PA average in the minors: .286/.358/.488, 40 doubles, 5 triples, 22 HR, 89 RBI, 59 BB, 120 K. Not Bruce-ian, but solid. #Reds
Let the wild speculation begin: what's the corresponding roster move? And what will Frazier's role be on the club?

Ah, good
Glad we have a place to discuss it morelier. THIS IS SO AWESOME.

Assuming the corresponding move is Gomes....
Doesn’t this end with him in Louisville? He’d have to pass through waivers first, right? Even so, I seriously doubt anyone would claim him. Would he accept an assignment to the Bats or would he think a change of scenery is in order? The Reds wouldn’t just outright release him would they?
Wasn’t it about this time in April that Dusty gave the quote about it just being April in response to Gomes low average? He indicated he could live with that as long as it wasn’t the end of June. Guess the timetable got accelerated.
Unless they phantom DL him or something.

I definitely agree.
I’m just saying that Baker seemed to indicate that he was going to give him a bit more rope than he did. It’s just surprising to me that Baker would be open to some kind of move so soon. He’s generally much more patient than us fans, as evidenced by his handling of Tavares, Patterson, or even last year with Bruce and Stubbs struggling.
Might not have been up to him.
Jocketty.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
Good point
Just a few weeks ago Baker said he’d give Gomes until June. I think Walt might have taken the car keys from Dusty on this one.
He definitely has a history of doing that.
It really seems like Walt lets Dusty do what he wants with lineups, etc. And if he screws it up, Walt steps in.
That’s my only reason for tempered excitement over this. Unless Walt gives Dusty specific instructions on how to use Frazier (which I’m not convinced he’ll do), I could see Heisey full time in LF and Cairo still backing up Rolen. I hope I’m wrong.
Billy Hamilton: Snax

Giving Heisey a chance to be a full time player isn't a bad thing, he has earned it.
Plus Frazier could be sort able to spell all infield positions and Heisey, I think it is possible to give Heisey and Frazier about 4-6 games a week.

The problem with Gomes ...
…. it seems that he isn’t asking for help, or getting much, or isn’t listening, or just can’t do better. The way he’s swinging doesn’t suggest an injury. It suggests he has lost his focus.
Gomes is, at best, an average MLB player, so no deluding ourselves, but he is much better than he has shown. Dusty probably believes that and may have assumed that something would eventually click.
It hasn’t. Gomes wrote his own check for this one.

I agree, but he hasn't always been this bad
The man is a .240 hitter, no question, but he has HR power and runs bases well, although sometimes too aggressively. We can keep beating this horse, I suppose. I am rooting for him but he is at best a 26th man on the roster.
I do a lot of stupid shit, but I'm not an idiot. - JCH24
he was bad before the Reds got him, which was how we got him
I don’t know if the change in leagues helped him as NL pitchers didn’t quite know how to exploit his weaknesses like AL pitchers did.
Gomes he a great rookie year in Tampa in 2005, but in 2008 he hit .182 and the Rays non-tendered him.
He hit well for the Reds in his first year, and his stats were inflated last year by an incredible May, but since June of last year he has been a bad hitter.

Yeah, I could see that too.
Still, Walt has allowed Baker to be patient with guys in the past. What’s different this time?
Gomes sucking so badly that his hand is forced?
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."

I honestly do care what happens to him.
Not to say I am keen on him staying with the big club, but I think it is mighty easy to kick a guy to the curb when you are watching from afar. It isn’t unimportant that the Reds take care of people who have problems other teams poop out on (see: Votto, Willis, Gomes, Volquez, even LeCure).

I honestly hope that if it is Gomes, today doesn’t turn into a celebration of him leaving. I’m pumped for Frazier to be on the team, but Jonny did some good things for the club and is clearly loved by his teammates. I hope whatever happens that he lands on his feet.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
I think most teams see him for what he is.
And what he is is not really worth a roster spot. Even in the AL, a smart team would only DH him against LHP, which is only 30% of the league. You’d have to be really desperate for a RH power bat to use a roster spot on him. (and pay him the money he is owed)
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
If he's used right he could be worth a spot...
his failings this year is mostly Dusty’s fault. He’s had 131 plate appearances versus righties, and only 26 versus lefties. His career ratio and 2010 ratio are both about 2:1. I could see the Mariners using him – Jack Cust is a lefty DH who is slugging 291. They also have someone named Mike Wilson on the roster. Gomes is an upgrade there. Same with the Oakland A’s – Matsui a lefty DH who isn’t hitting well.
Sign Carlos Silva!!!
Fair point.
It just seems like the market for a DH who can only hit lefties would be very limited.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
The salary is a deterrent
Low as it is. Oakland, at least, would balk at paying him the bulk of his $1.75M, when there’s likely to be an in-house candidate who can jump the low bar of just DH-ing against LHP. Especially since adding him also involves bumping someone else off the 40-man who is likely to have more utility.
But, you’re right, he’s great against LHP. He’s still useful to the Reds in that role. The problem is, they have three part-timers out in LF and no credible back-up for Rolen. Frazier helps on both fronts.

I mean, he’s not worth a roster spot at the big league level, but I could certainly envision a case where the Reds could need to call someone up for a couple of weeks because of injuries. Gomes as the last guy on the bench and a late inning PH in that situation isn’t so bad.

Nope. I don't think they call him up to start him once a week.
I bet he gets at least 2 starts a week in LF, and is Rolen’s primary backup at 3rd, which would equal at least 1 start a week there.
Dusty still doesn’t seem to love Lewis, and he hasn’t exactly torn it up thus far.
I think 3-5 starts a week is more likely.
Billy Hamilton: Snax

Agreed
And implicit in the promotion is the end of END, unless Todd throws up on himself. They have the same defensive roles as a 3B/LF, but Frazier is clearly superior. And END’s strike zone issues are obviously a much bigger problem at the ML level than they are at Louisville.
I would guess that means Valaika gets sent down?
Since he’s basically got END’s roster spot.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Valaika's already back in AAA, I think.

Geez, are they really going to DFA Gomes?
I can’t imagine who else. Heisey’s probably safe because he’s the only real CFer not named Stubbs on the roster.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Due to the death of Minor League Splits
I don’t know how he’s fared since then, but pre-2010, he was .334/.406/.576 against lefties lifetime in the minors.
Heisey had even more impressive splits against lefties, but has completely inverted them in the majors. And I think they might still view him as a sub, based on his small-sample performance off the bench vs. starting.
So Frazier should at least be starting 30% of the time in LF and roughly once a week to back-up Rolen. I think Lewis deserves more rope to see if he can be the left-handed end of the platoon, but I wouldn’t be mad if Heisey was getting 50% of starts out there.

I'd say
2 games a week for Rolen, first RH bat off the bench, first option to spell Votto at 1B (on rare occasions when needed), 2nd option in LF behind Heisey, or 1st option if Heisey is spelling Stubs in CF.
That could add up to 350 AB over a year.
Did I miss the official announcement that Gomes is the odd man out?
Or are we just assuming?
Joey Votto on Colin Cowherd: "I don’t know who he is"
are we entertaining the idea of anyone else?
Frazier kind of makes Cairo expendable too, doesn’t it? Though the 2 year contract probably prohibits that. Lewis doesn’t have options. Dusty seems to like Heisey, despite lack of playing time (and the fact that he can play CF). Renteria is getting on base just enough for his veteranyness to keep him around. I guess it kind of has to be Gomes, huh? Certainly bittersweet, but necessary
Joey Votto on Colin Cowherd: "I don’t know who he is"
Heisey definitely isn't going anywhere.
Same with Renteria. I’d have thought Lewis was a possibility, but that leaves Bruce and Votto as the only lefties on the roster, and that just isn’t enough. I think Lewis’ handedness keeps him on the roster, at least until they decide Alonso deserves a shot.
Cairo is a possibility, but he’s still owed more money than Gomes and still serves some purpose. Frazier makes Gomes completely expendable.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
Yeah, Heisey is the designated CF back-up
and has cemented his role as all-purpose OF sub and righty PH bat. That, and his actual performance so far, should keep him up all year.
Lewis has the left-handedness working for him. But he’s also more likely to get snatched up through waivers. He plays better defense and is only paid $900K.

Right, but if he had less than 5 years service and he refused the assignment

no, he still gets paid
From Wikipedia:
Typically a player is placed on waivers after being designated for assignment for the purpose of outrighting him to one of the club’s minor league teams. A player who is outrighted to the minors is removed from the 40-man roster but is still paid according to the terms of his guaranteed contract. A player can only be outrighted once in his career without his consent. However, a player must clear waivers (that is, no other team may place a waiver claim on the player) to be sent to a minor league team. Also, if the player has five or more full years of major league service, he must give consent to be assigned to the minors. If the player withholds consent, the team must either release him or keep him on the major league roster. In either case, the player must continue to be paid under the terms of his contract.

Sending down a pitcher seems especially unlikely since the bullpen is a little burnt. Gomes DFA is a little hard to believe, but it seems as likely as anything else. Frazier’s up to make starts.

Votto is the Carter II
Look for him to sky over some French dude – probably Juan Pierre – for a slam dunk home run.

on a performance basis, its clearly Gomes that should go
But having Frazier up does make Cairo awfully redundant.

Fox Sports Ohio is reporting that pitcher Todd Frazier is being called up

He’s from my hometown and won a LLWS in 1998!

Point Pleasant, right?
by Charlie Scrabbles on May 23, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Frazier is from Point Pleasant
but played on the Tom’s River team. I think little league teams do this all the time. They can gather all-stars from all around, as long as the kids can get to the games. Point Pleasant is only about 20 mins north of Tom’s River.
by Charlie Scrabbles on May 23, 2011 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Right you are, bb-ref lists him as from Point Pleasant
He went to HS in Tom’s River.
Also, I didn’t know he has a brother (Jeff) who’s playing with the Tigers.
I think the all-star teams are supposed to be from the "area"
Which would be inside some sort of local governing group’s domain.
Which isn’t quite the same as the Saudi All-Stars, who are military brats.

I am a huge Todd Frazier fan
I can only hope that he show his stuff to great advantage.
If he hits MLB pitching (and methinks he will) the Reds will find a spot for him.
Maybe we’ll see by next year:
Hi-Z/Alonso lf
BP 2b
Votto 1b
Bruce rf
Stubbs cf
Frazier 3b
Hanigan C
Jannish (/) ss
Rolen is going to be gone by next season and Juan Fiasco has yet to take advantage of his opps.

Rolen is under contract for next year
I am pretty sure he has a no trade clause, and I don’t think he is in a hurray to leave Cincinnati.

Yeah, Rolen's retiring a Red...
That said, it wouldn’t surprise me if Frazier winds up getting 50%+ starts @3B and then spot-starts elsewhere as Rolen limps his way to the end of a very, very good career.
This is my hope, and another reason I'm so glad Frazier is getting the call now.
I think an ideal situation would be for Rolen and Frazier to do a 50/50 split at 3B next year, both to preserve Rolen and to pass the torch to the next guy.
Calling him up now lets him get his feet wet and also lets the org know if this is something that would work next year.

the only way Rolen doesn't finish this contract with the Reds.
is if the Reds aren’t contending and he has a chance to help a contender next year as a deadline deal.

holy cow
Interesting that he wasn’t traveling with the team.
But…I really cannot believe they’d go without a legit SS to back up Janny. It’s been three years since Frazier played SS. He was in A-ball.
If something happened to either Renteria or Janish, I would expect Valaika to get the call.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Rent use to be a true shortstop....
He doesn’t have the glove or the range to even play defense these days. It would not be a loss at all. It would be a huge upgrade to our roster.
Frazier for Rent
Alonso for Gomes/Lewis
These two moves would make us a much better team…IMO
We need Brandon Larson to Play 3rd! Can't be worse than Rentawreck, right?!?
by BiggerRedMachines on May 23, 2011 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Frazier hasn't played short stop in years
just because he is younger and more athletic doesn’t mean he will be a better shortstop than Renteria.

Yeah, if it is Renteria, that doesn't give me much hope for how much Frazier will actually play.

This could be as simple as
Volquez or Smith being optioned for Maloney, while Renteria is taking family leave or something.

Fya said Dusty told Gomes he’s still part of the plan, so he’s presumably not going anywhere.
