That was ugly. Indians win, 12-4.
Joe Nuxhall Honorary Memorial Star of the Game
Well, this certainly won't go to the Reds pitching staff. With the exception of Francisco Cordero, who pitched a scoreless, one-hit eighth, every Red who pitched in this one allowed runs.
I'm going to have to give this one to Asdrubal Cabrera, who went 5 for 5 with two HRs. Sure, he also had an error, but that wasn't enough to make for how he walloped Reds pitching all afternoon.
Key Plays
I don't even know how to narrow it down to a few key plays here. The Reds took a lead on a Joey Votto solo HR in the first, but Edinson Volquez gave up four runs in the bottom of the inning and the Reds trailed from then on. Feel free to check out the FanGraph if you want to see how this one looked.

interesting tidbit from teh fya
Baker says #Reds are “mulling” over Volquez’s future in the rotation.
Another tidbit...
Whoa.
What he said afterward is going to win him a lot of friends in the clubhouse.
"Everybody has to step up," he said, "start to score some runs. In the last five games, how many runs have we scored? Like 13? That’s not the way we were playing last year. We’re better than that."
I blame the coaching staff for this statement.

Though to be fair
he was thoughtful enough to avoid signing a long term contract.

True
Perhaps if we package him and Gomes together we can qualify for TARP

The worst thing about it is that if we trade him . . .
He’ll probably pitch lights out in about 4 months for whomever is the trading partner. Pitchers coming back from Tommy John takes about 16 months need about 16 months to get their groove back and he’ll be a steal.
I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in terms of his athletic ability, but to say garbage like that without owning a poor performance is inexcusable for a major leaguer.
That first paragraph was not quite ready for prime time
I freaking hate the inadvertent pressing of the “post” button.
He should be back at close to full strength
he pitched half a season last year. I don’t think we can blame TJS for his problems anymore. Generally the 16 months thing means about 12 months to rehab and rebuild arm strength and 3-4 months of actually pitching again to regain your feel and command. He started pitching minor league games in June of last year, he should have his feel and command back by now.

Do you say that because he has been pitching badly and made a stupid quote?
The quote is stupid, rather selfish, and misses the point. But I’m not sure I understand the personal attack.

Yeah
I think we are all a little raw from the awful streak, both the Reds’ and Volquez’s.
by Charlie Scrabbles on May 22, 2011 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah definitely both and my comment was too much
it was meant to be an awful exaggeration but it sounds pretty harsh. I have a better insult anyway Volquez=a sucky Chris Carpenter. A complainer with no skillz!
I think he is spinning his wheels looking for an excuse.
I am sure it’s frustrating and that he is extremely pissed, as is Gomes, as is Renteria, as is Janish, etc. I wish Dusty took a different strategy sometimes, a bit shorter leash, but also think these are good guys and they want to win and want their teammates to believe in them.
There was an old post linked on the right side of the page a few days ago, right before Gomes was called up for the first time. And all the comments were clamoring for/demanding that Dusty bring Gomes up, how Gomes would be such a huge boost to the team. So to some extent fans have gotta remember that there will be good times and there will be bad, and if a guy gets the yips or is on a cold streak, he is probably much more exasperated than any of us, even devastated. And it’s actually nothing personal that a guy is playing poorly.
by Cuetotally Amazing on May 22, 2011 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions
absolutely
fans tend to be myopic (as a collective) probably because they experience the immediate pains of the season more keenly than players and managers who I think have some more perspective. But EV just ignoring the problem and insulting the offense angered me. Yesterday, Bailey pitched 7 innings and gave up two runs and took the blame himself. It shows the maturity difference—even if the offense should have showed up more for Bailey.
I definitely agree with you, definitely.
I am sure he regrets his comment, and he made the problem bigger than it needed to be. If you have always been the best at your craft, as almost any MLBer has until he reached the high ranks of professional baseball, it must be insanely frustrating when things aren’t working right. Much worse than being scolded by your boss because you were a day late with a memo :).

I went to the App, Trail
Besides nausea on the Virginia back roads, it was a great time

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
That brings back memories
Long trips on the PA turnpike back and forth to school. Entered at Washington, PA to somewhere outside of Philly. 10 hours total and about 5 on that turnpike.
Now, I avoid the PA turnpike at all costs
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
The Pennsylvania Turnpike is my least favorite road in the entire country
Expensive, narrow, not well kept yet always under construction, and the speed limit is 55 through a huge chunk of it.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
Yeah, I've gotten used to the NJ turnpike
If I leave early from NY, I can avoid the mess. I’ve left NY a couple times around noon and I’ve come to regret that decision.
Also, EZ Pass helps immensely
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
I don't understand the people who live out here and don't get an EZ Pass
That thing has probably saved me about 10 hours of waiting in the 3 years I’ve had it.
Billy Hamilton: Snax
Devin Mesoraco: Snacks
Some people can't
Since you need a bank account or credit card or some such thing.
And some people are seriously creeped out by the “Big Brother” aspects.
There have been people who lost their jobs and their divorce cases because EZ-Pass showed they weren’t where they said they were.
Also, be careful in construction zones. Some of those have detectors that can tell if you’re speeding if you have an EZ-Pass. It can’t be used legally, but the construction crews do use it to rat you out to the cops.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
In Virginia
you can get an EZ pass by paying cash.
Interesting about the construction zones – I’ve never heard of that happening.
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
it's not
It’s happening.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Yeah, I've heard stories about the cheating spouses, it's not exactly new
And I can somewhat buy the notion of freaking about about Big Brother – but honestly, those people probably don’t have a cell phone, don’t have a credit card and stay off the grid as much as possible – paranoid people
But I’ve never heard stuff about the construction zones
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
they are theoretically not supposed to use the information
In practice, well, it’s their lives on the line, as they see it.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I think it depends on where you purchased your EZ-Pass
In VA – it can be accessed via a court order.
I wonder how many of the ‘cheating spouses’ had EZ-Pass set up with their partners. I think that would make it easier for a suspecting spouse to turn over “their” EZ-Pass records to the attorney.
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
I meant the construction zone thing
Cheating spouses and criminal conduct are whole ’nother matter.

volquez is a douche.
From Fay:
What he said afterward is going to win him a lot of friends in the clubhouse.
"Everybody has to step up," he said, "start to score some runs. In the last five games, how many runs have we scored? Like 13? That’s not the way we were playing last year. We’re better than that."
Not giving up runs in the first inning also helps
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
According to our former leader
Volquez had faced 63 batters in the first inning. The next closest was at 51 batters. That doesn’t include the 9 batters faced today.

it feels like this team will never win again
obviously thats not the case, but im mentally preparing myself for 2-5 or worse over these next 7 games.
is it just me, or are the reds highs higher and lows lower than most other teams?
Streaks are inevitable.
Even a team that’s winning 75% of its games will have multi-game losing streaks over the course of a season.
Two of the last five games have been losses by one run, with another by two runs. Sure, they’re still losses, but that stuff tends to even out.
We would be more able to ignore the horrible Volquez start and the Morton shutout if not for the other three losses in a row.
Still not a candidate.
im just worried that this streak will continue
based on the next 7 games being away against the top guns in the NLE.
i still think when all is said and done the reds will be in the playoffs, but i am prepared for a rough week this week.
Oh, I agree with you there...
but I just think it’s easy to ascribe these streaks to bigger reasons than actually exist. Before this, they had a great winning streak when they got back Cueto and Bailey…and had lots of things bounce the right way. After a run of not-so-great breaks, a day the offense was shut out, and a horrible pitching performance, they have a few close losses and two not-close losses.
Keeping Gomes out of the lineup, continuing to rely on Cueto and Bailey, and doing something about Volquez should make me somewhat less worried about things. But the next couple of series aren’t going to be easy regardless.
Still not a candidate.
yeah, i am mostly concerned they choose to go on a 5 game losing streak before going to Philley
a 9 game losing streak or a stretch of losing 7 or 8 out of 9 is very possible.

After April last year part of the Reds success was their ability to avoid prolonged losing streaks and bad stretches
until they had put the division away in September, I really only remember on bad stretch after April, and that was in the beginning of June, when they dropped a series to St. Louis, dropped a series to KC, were swept by Seattle, and dropped a series to L.A. But then they got everything back together.
This season has been less fun then last year, I think my expectations were too high to be able to enjoy this season like I enjoyed 2010.

1 hit, 1 run, 1 walk in 3.1 innings is pretty decent.
Too bad the hit was a home run, but at least he didn’t load up the bases first.

His results were solid
though he was giving up a ton of hard-hit balls that went just foul.

Time to pull the plug on Volquez
He’s had two quality starts in 10 games. Mike Leake has pitched better (4 in 6 starts). So has Sam LeCure (3 in 4 starts). Absolutely no reason to let this guy make another start.

They had a five game losing streak, too.
I hope this isn’t reverse deja vu.
by Chester Drawers on May 22, 2011 6:41 PM EDT reply actions
I do wonder if that rivalry has gotten so hyped on both sides
That the teams come out a little deflated afterwards. The Reds swept a hard fought series with the Cardinals (just as the Cardinals did in Cincinnati last year), and have played pretty lifelessly since then. Sure, they swept the Cubs, but that was thanks mostly to the Cubs blowing the games. For the most part, we all enjoy the intensity of the St. Louis rivalry, but I wonder if it would be better for the players if it was just another series.

I think I agree to an extent.
I think that there are often cases where teams get up for big games, and then regardless of their success against those teams, they go on to feel like the teams they are supposed to beat should be pushovers. And then they turn out not to be.
Reds are in a slump.
To some end, part of what I rail about with the coaching is connected to that.
The coaches can make little suggestions, tweak the process, give a player a bit of confidence … that’s what coaches should do.
Not suggesting they aren’t doing that but when the team is playing badly, you can depend on (a.) luck or (b.) intelligent help.
We know these guys can play big-league baseball.
Ballplayers usually figure it out. Coaches can make the process a little more logical.
I do a lot of stupid shit, but I'm not an idiot. - JCH24
There are definately some issues:
1. Volquez – He really has not pitched all that well…until he is way far behind then he does fine
2, Love me some Gomes but it is time to consider trading this guy, he is too limited
3. Jannish – Great defense is wonderful but his ABs are not so professional and he ain’t going to hit MLB pitching
4. Rolen – An old 36 ,Gramps is still good but only a muscle pull away from another stint of the DL.
5. Hi-Z - Hey Dusty here’s your lead off man/LF
6. Stubbs - Got to move him down in the order and give him protection or move BP back to the #2 slot.
Then there’s Alonso and Frazier whacking the shit out of the ball in L-Ville
This team will right itself but I only hope they don’t fall too far behind before they make some moves…June is just around the corner.
