Farmers Only Farmer's Market: The Unusual Suspects
Yeah, we could probably go another week and just put Yonder Alonso, or Todd Frazier, or Devin Mesoraco here. Those guys are still raking, as they have been all season. In fact, Yonder has a 10 game hitting streak right now that you might not have heard about. But for today's edition of the Farmer's Market, we're going to look at a few lesser known guys.
I'll tell you one thing, when picking the 3 freshest prospects of the week is as difficult as a task as it is this week, we're in good shape. In fact, honorable mention goes to Juan Duran, who didn't crack this week's list, despite hitting .313/.405/.500 in his last 10 games. Anyone think he may be putting it all together? On to the list.
Danny Dorn
Dornie started slowly this year, but has been gangbusters lately. Primarily playing first base for the Bats, Dorn is hitting .371/.450/.486 in his last 10 games, and has 4 straight multi-hit games. He's no stranger to Bats fans, but can he muster up a big-league call in his 3rd year at AAA?
Brad Boxberger
Boxy's line so far this season: 17 2/3 innings in 14 games, 1.53 ERA, and batters are hitting .167 against him. 31 strikeouts to 9 walks. Not exactly what anyone was expecting when he was drafted, but we may have the right handed Billy Bray here. Stay tuned.
Stephen Hunt
Hunt was originally sent to Bakersfield from Billings when another player went on the disabled list, and was only expected to be there for about a week. He's played in 19 games since being promoted and has collected a hit in 19 of them. Read that last sentence again. He's on a 19 game hitting streak. He's hitting .459/.524/.730 with 3 homers and 23 RBI, and has struck out only 9 times in 74 AB. He PITCHED A SHUTOUT INNING on Saturday. This could be a really interesting story. STEVE HUNT!
Donnie Joseph
Uh oh, DoJo. In 15 games pitched, Donnie Joe's ERA is at 8.80. His strikeouts and walks are pretty decent for that span, but that's a ton of runs. He's gonna need to turn it around quickly to stick on most prospect radars.
Kris Negron
Tough to admit that I'm eating crow on this one, but he hasn't been good. He's hitting .146 in his last 10 games, and isn't really challenging for playing time, as guys like Valaika, Cozart, and Brent Clevlen are performing better at the positions that he plays. Step it up, Kristopher.
Billy Hamilton
He was on here a few weeks ago after he inexplicably stopped hitting, and hasn't started since then. In the last 10 games, he's hitting .122, which is 5 for his last 41. 18 strikeouts to 3 walks in that span. There may be problem.
On to the games after the jump...
- Louisville won two of three games against Buffalo over the weekend. They began the series with a huge 15-7 win on Friday. Devin Mesoraco was the top performer, going 4-for-5 with 2 doubles, and Juan Francisco, Todd Frazier, and Jeremy Hermida all homered for the good guys. Kris Negron also went 2-for-5 and drove in 4 runs. Matt Maloney gave up 6 runs in 8 innings of work. The Bats also won on Saturday with a 8-3 win behind the D-Train. Dontrelle Willis went 5 1/3 innings and gave up 2 runs to earn his 3rd win of the season. 5 Bats players recorded multiple hit games, and Devin Mesoraco hit his 5th homer of the year and drove in 4 runs. They fell 4-3 on Sunday despite a good start by Scott Carroll. Carroll gave up 1 run in 6 innings and struck out 4. Zack Cozart, Yonder Alonso, and Daniel Dorn all had two hits each. Up next: Chad Reineke takes the mound at 11:05 this morning, as the Bats try to lock up the series win.
- Carolina lost two of three games against Birmingham over the weekend. On Friday, they lost 5-4. Dallas Buck got the start, and gave up 5 runs in 5 1/3 innings. Cody Puckett drove in 3 of the Mudcats' 4 runs. They got manhandled on Saturday 8-0, despite a really good start by Matt Klinker. Klinker gave up 2 unearned runs in 6 innings pitched, and struck out 3 with no walks. Donnie Joseph wasn't as lucky, giving up 5 runs in his inning of work to put the game out of reach. Felix Perez and Miguel Rojas had two hits each. They were able to bounce back and win 7-3 on Sunday. Daryl Thompson started and went 5 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs with 6 strikeouts. Felix Perez and Mike Costanzo had two hits each. Up next: Kyle McCulloch will take the mound as the Mudcats take on Mobile at 8:05.
- Bakersfield also went 1-2 on the weekend. They won 7-3 on Friday behind a 15-hit offensive barrage. Eric Campbell went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, and 5 other Blaze players also had multi-hit games. Lance Janke started and gave up 3 runs in 6 innings, and Clayton Shunick pitched 3 no-hit innings to preserve the win (and earn an inexplicable save). On Saturday, the Blaze lost 11-2 to Modesto, mostly due to a rough start by Josh Ravin. No standout performances on offense, as the Blaze only mustered up 3 extra-base hits, but outfielder Stephen Hunt pitched the best inning of the night, walking one and striking out one in a no-hit inning. The only other pitcher to not give up any runs? Another outfielder, Wellinton Ramirez. Sunday's game was exactly twice as bad, as the Blaze lost 22-2 to Modesto. Eric Campbell and Josh Fellhauer had two hits each, and Brodie Greene hit his first homer of the year. Unfortunately, the pitching. Pedro Villarreal gave up 10 runs (9 earned) in his 3 1/3 inning start, and it was a pretty routine ass-kicking until the Nuts scored 10 in the 9th, 9 of those runs coming off of Ruben Medina. This was his first outing since getting demoted from Carolina. Yikes. Up next: The Blaze try to keep Modesto under 20 runs tonight at 10:30. Starting pitcher to be determined.
- Dayton split their weekend. They lost 2-1 in 10 innings on Friday to Fort Wayne. Daniel Renken pitched well, giving up 1 run in 6, and Jason Braun pitched 3 shutout innings of relief. The offense didn't get the memo, however, and only mustered up 1 extra base hit. They won 7-2 on Saturday, behind a solid performance by Josh Smith. Smith gave up 1 run and struck out 5 in 5 innings to lower his ERA to 1.91 on the season. Devin Lohman was 2-for-4 with a homer. Their game on Sunday was rained out. Up next: The Dragons have an off day today.

I believe that Duran has a total of zero homeruns to left field. When he learns to turn on a ball, watch out.
When you come to the fork in the road, take it.

Holy cow
He’s doing this without pulling the ball? Isn’t he Adam Dunn-sized? Yikes, he could be a truly scary one.
Or even if I just like such as judged a fish contest that would get me outta the house and in some air.

He's taller and skinnier than Dunner is
Listed at 6’7", 205. If he puts some muscle on, look out.

poor Dorn.
Like Buffet’s “Pirate looks at 40,” he’s 200 years too late. If he put up that slash line at AAA 4 or so years ago, hed be called up and batting cleanup in the big leagues by now.
Remember when Rich Aurilia hit 4th for a year? Thankfully neither do I.

He's been hitting pretty well for a few years now right?
I remember Doug Gray always thought he deserved a chance but I believe the Reds have left him unprotected in the last couple rule v drafts – or was it only last year’s?
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."

There must be something the numbers aren’t telling us, because nobody in baseball thinks he’s worth anything.
by Charlie Scrabbles on May 16, 2011 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah
He’s always had a good bat. But he can’t get a callup to save his life, and he’s been unprotected for Rule 5 for a couple of years now and got no interest there, either.
Dunno what the problem is. Even if he can’t hit lefties or plays bad defense, you’d think his stick would interest someone.
He was Stubbs’ roommate before Stubbs got called up, so we can probably assume he’s not a jerk and doesn’t have overpowering BO or something.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Maybe his agent should start looking at Japan
He could probably make some good money over there, and it has worked for similar players.

I bet if he doesn't make the bigs this year
he will be in Japan next year. He’ll be a 6-year minor league free agent after this season, no?
by Charlie Scrabbles on May 16, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions
He's really only a 1B, and not even very good at that.
It’s tough to get a job as a platoon 1B unless you can really hit, and Dorn hasn’t really proven that. He has a decent eye and decent power, but he probably won’t hit for average in the majors, meaning he probably projects to something like .260/.330/.450 with bad defense, no versatility, and only the ability to hit against 70% of the pitchers around. The minors are littered with people like Danny Dorn, who just has one too many flaw to make him worth a major league roster spot.
yeah, this is probably true
but you’d think a team like the Mariners, whose offense is seriously abominable, would at least take a flyer on him to split DH duties and give Smoak a day off here and there.
Joey Votto on Colin Cowherd: "I don’t know who he is"
Yeah, BK eating crow about Negron is nothing compared to the feast I'm going to have to stomach if Billy doesn't turn it around.

If we expected Billy to dominate his whole minor league career
I’d say we were delusional (I admit it, I thought he had a chance to). We need to give him time, the skills/tools are there, though I’m worried he’s a 2B rather than a SS.
I'm worried he can't hit.
Or at least not at all as a lefty. I know he’s new to switch-hitting, but he really seems to blow at it.
I say just let him finish the season as a switch hitter and see where he is with it a year from now
Some players are late-bloomers as prospects, one example: Mesoraco. Give him time, I’m surprised he’s even shown us anything so far.
He had a great year last year
He’s just had a bad month.
by Charlie Scrabbles on May 16, 2011 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions
He had a great half a year last year in his second try at rookie ball (though his first in Billings).
Given the questions surrounding him when he was drafted, his initial performance in the GCL, and his performance so far this year, I think it’s legitimate to worry that it’s more than simply a bad month. He’s obviously got insane speed, but I’m not convinced he’s got anything to go along with it. His walk rate has been about average, but he’s doing an awful job making contact and not flashing any improved power. Oh billy billy billy….
I can't argue with that
But the dude has more athletic talent himself than the entire Toledo Mud Hens roster. I’m not saying I’m not worried about him, because I am, but I’m going to give him a number of years before I write him off. He’s all tools right now and that isn’t going to change overnight. When he’s 26 and struggling in AA, that’s when I’ll throw in the towel.

Thanks go out to 'creds, Mrs. 'creds, voley, and Weezer
and especially Johnny Cueto and Ramon Hernandez, for a most excellent time in NYC. RR’s ratio of cool folks I’ve met in real life only got stronger. And though Mrs. Scrabbles appeared to not have a good time, she wants me to assure you that she thinks you are all totally wicked and sweet, but that she was just really tired from a late night, an early morning, and walking 50 or so blocks that day.
It’s awesome to know RR is growing strong franchises all around the country, Fight Club style.

I'm glad you posted this. I was going to say something too, but the wilds of the game thread/recap didn't seem like the place.
It was a pleasure to meet both Mr. and Mrs. Scrabbles. And no worries on Mrs. S. She was lovely!
Between the comfortable victory and good company, it was a fantastic afternoon.

so this was the first I’ve checked the site since last week.

Sleeping in > going to Ellis Island
Chinese food in Manhattan > Chinese food in Brooklyn
NYC is like an amusement park. After spending two days there, you want nothing else than to live there forever. It’s just so much fun! There is amazing food, tons of fun things to do, and even a giant roller coaster…underground. After spending three days there, you look in your wallet and quickly realize you do not want to live there forever.

Yeah, tell my great-grandparents about it.
Let's not kid ourselves. It's really, really, bad.
Eh, I wouldn't go to Brooklyn for it.
There’s much better food in Brooklyn. Some of it is even worth braving the hipsters for.
Still not a candidate.

The thing that bothers me about it is the RT thing.
Why not just respond directly? Why do you have to edit what I said, make me look like a jerk, then RT to all of your lemmings? I was honestly trying to have a discussion and he turned it into a big pissing contest.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I was pretty surprised they didnt start him out as a starter this year
but there was always questions on whether he had the stamina to go deep into starts, and due to that probably a full season in the bigs. Good to see him dominating as a reliever, those always come in handy.
