Game 20 Recap: Reds 2 Cardinals 4
via store.nrm.org
Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game
Jordan Smith: Matt Maloney was unexpectedly called upon to start the game, had a rough 39 pitch first inning and started but failed to record an out in the third inning. Smith relieved Maloney, and threw 3 innings of 1 run baseball saving the bullpen from complete disaster. Honorable mention goes to Nick Masset for his two perfect innings of work, and Bill Bray for his scoreless inning of baseball, and Brandon Phillips for his 2-5 night and solo home run.
Key Plays
Tony LaRussa replaced his starting pitcher with Miguel Batista before the game started, while Dusty Baker stuck with Edinson Volquez. 6 pitches into the game, a 2 hour 10 minute rain delay happened. Scheduled starter Kyle McClellan replaced Batista after the rain delay. Edinson Volquez did not return either, pressing long reliever Matt Maloney into service.
Maloney struggled but didn't get blown out. The 39 pitch first inning gassed him, as prior to today Maloney has not thrown more than 53 pitches in a game. Maloney was either lucky or tough, as he only gave up 2 runs despite allowing 9 base runners.
Jordan Smith replaced Maloney and promptly recorded a double play, and got out of the 3rd with no damage. Smith got the Reds through the fourth and almost got the Reds through the fifth inning without allowing a run; but in a back breaking play immediately following Bruce gunning Matt Holiday down at third for the second out, Smith gave up an RBI single to Yodier Molina, to make the score 4-1.
Brandon Phillips hit a solo home run in the 5th, bring the Reds to within 2 before Smith allowed the run.
The Reds had a number of chances to score and a number base runner blunders too depressing to document.
Other Notes
Dusty Baker was asked about Volquez after the game, he said that he was told before the game there was going to be a window to play. Dusty also admitted that the Cardinals probably had "different information" than he had. But I gotta hand it to Dusty, he didn't whine, he didn't complain, we know if it went the other way a certain member of the Cardinals field staff would be writing a letter to Bud Selig right now. But do the Reds not have smart phones or internet access? I mean weather.com and Weatherunderground are amazing and easy resources to use; also more trust worthy than Tony LaRussa.
Dusty also said it is possible that Volquez can start on Sunday in place of Sam LeCure.
Dusty was asked if the Reds will make any changes to their pitching staff, he said that is possible. I really think they should send down Maloney, DFA Herrera or Fisher, and get Chad Reineke up to the big league staff to serve as an extra long man in case there is more rain, short start, or long game.
The Reds stranded 11 men on base, but made so many silly outs.
Joey Votto didn reach base.
Scott Rolen didn't play with a bad shoulder.
Nick Masset threw two perfect innings with a strikeout. Hopefully the Masset Hound has re-figured out how to pitch.
The bullpen is in real bad shape, it was starting to recover from last week, but having to cover 9 innings today hurt. Travis Wood is going to need to step up tomorrow and go deep into the game, Wood's start isn't just important for winning tomorrow but important for getting the bullpen back on track.

Thanks for doing this justin
I had every intention of doing a game recap, and then the rain delay happened. I’d call St. Louis a stupid city, but it sounds like the tornados they got were pretty bad. So I’ll just call the Cardinals a stupid organization for playing the game at all.

From the Fay:
Reds manager Dusty Baker was not happy with the whole situation with the rain and the start of Friday’s game.
"It was a really tough start," Baker said. "There was information we received that probably wasn’t the information they received. We probably wouldn’t have started Volquez in the first place. We were told there was going to be a window. That window lasted about three minutes."
The Reds were told, Baker said, the window was 45 minutes to an hour.
"Sometimes the weatherman’s wrong I guess," he said. "When we went to the plate with umpires, they said the rain was going to come eventually, which we all knew. They said we’re going to play through it the best we can. It just didn’t last too long.
"If the umpires had known, they wouldn’t have started it either."
I don’t get it. How was the info TLR got different from what Dusty and the umpires got?

he sounded annoyed last night
but we know if things went the other way and they were playing in Cincinnati TLR would throw a shitfit. TLR has called for the Reds ace to be suspended and twice accused the Reds of not preparing the baseballs.
Dusty also said that the Reds biggest problem last night was stranding 3000 men on base.

So is Dusty implying that someone with the Cards told him the wrong weather on purpose?
And then told TLR the right weather? As much as I hate making excuses for Dusty’s incompetence, it’s not like this is something that’s out of the question for them to do, right?

Everybody knew. The weather people were issuing tornado warnings a half-hour before the game.

St. Louisan here.
There were also sirens well before the game started. I was shocked they started the game at all.
"Sometimes you scare me." - azruavatar
I have no direct knowledge of how this works
but I’ve assumed that they’re dependent on the staff at the stadium to provide them with such information.
This is probably most evident while they’re preparing for the game and on the field, since it’s not like they can pull up the radar on their phones between pitches.
Still not a candidate.
The way it works is
There is a weather “room” at the stadium that has the weather equipment in it. The one who monitors it is usually the head grounds keeper. He and the Director of operations for the stadium then make an educated guess on when the rain is supposed to arrive and then relay that information to the teams and the umpire. The umpire combined with the groundskeeper and the director of operations will then make a decision on if the game is going to start. If it did go down last night as said, then TLR already had the information and the umpires and dusty were given incorrect information. Does that excuse Dusty from asking BP to exit his Twitter app and check the radar? No probably not, but if the umpires knew what was coming there is no way they would’ve started that game.
What I don't get
is why anyone would have wanted to start the game.
Did the Cardinals really want to avoid having to give refunds that much?
Still not a candidate.
There are
no refunds unless the game is canceled. If they decided to have a 5 hour rain delay then under most circumstances the game is played and no refund is issued. TLR wanted the game to to start because he had a distinct advantage in knowledge. If he wants to admit it or not his stadium team knew what was coming. It is impossible to not know with the technology they have in that room. But by misleading the umpires and the Reds to believing their was an hour window Dusty kept his starter in whereas TLR kept his from warming up until after the rain delay because he knew there was no window.
Right, I get that they avoided refunds.
I guess this is why I suspect that this sort of deception actually went on. Without that, I don’t see why anyone on either team would have wanted this game to happen.
Unless the Cardinals really did want to avoid paying refunds.
Still not a candidate.
TLR
wanted it to happen because he knew our starter wouldn’t pitch but maybe an inning before getting to the bullpen. Killing our bullpen in the first game of a three game set. By encouraging the game to start he got a big advantage for not only the game but the series.
Volquez not pitching
If Volquez never pitched in the first inning, I don’t understand why he couldn’t pitch when the game resumed. Is warming up such a fine process that you can only do that once for a starting pitcher?
"Red Reporter is respected as a meme-factory" RijoSaboCaseyWKRP
You can't have it both ways.
If Dusty had left Volquez on the lineup card throughout the two hour rain delay and something had happened to him when the game began again, people would want his head for that. Instead, he made the most low-risk decision in a crappy situation to ensure no harm, and Dusty is now “incompetent” (not directed at you, redandblue). Direct the self-hate outwards, Reds fans. This is a great chance to hate on TLR, which is always much deserved.
by Cuetotally Amazing on Apr 23, 2011 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think anybody considers the decision to start Maloney
to be incompetent. For me, that’s the area where we just have to trust the manager, since he (hopefully) has the best feel for how able someone is to play.
The only comment I’ve seen about incompetence was referring to Dusty’s failure to evaluate the weather independently, which is probably stated a bit too strongly, but still. It seems a reasonable thing to criticize.
Regardless of whether the Cardinals were actually playing games with this, I think we can all agree that doing so would be pretty absurd. This game obviously should not have been played.
Still not a candidate.
Can we please also all agree
that TLR is a d-bag, if a crafty d-bag? Also, my heart softened for the Cardinals players a little bit when Freese gave Cairo a friendly pat after tagging him out. I like empathy, I guess.

there was a game either last year or, more likely, 2009
Cordero pitched the first 2/3 of the 9th, and then there was an hour rain delay. Dusty kept Cordero in to keep the save, and the save evaporated. It was a sad day.
Let's not kid ourselves. It's really, really, bad.
there was the Harang start of 2009
where Harang pitched 4.2 innings with a lead, and Dusty brought him back out to get the last out so he would get a win. Harang had a hot start in 2009 went into a slump for the next 6 starts or so.

I’m going to be Dusty’s psychiatrist and say that the past criticism of being rough on pictures made him scared to do something to Volquez.
"Red Reporter is respected as a meme-factory" RijoSaboCaseyWKRP
I think that's fair.
And not sure it’s a bad idea.
It is too bad they lost last night but it was actually a very encouraging game in some ways. They stuck to it and got themselves into a position to win several times. It would have been much better if they had come through in those situations, but it really seemed like it would spin out of control. Now it sounds like Volquez will be ready for tomorrow, which isn’t bad news.

Listening to the WLB announcers
Every comment seems to swirl around bad sportsmanship by the fans. They seem to be goading the fans into booing the Reds, continuing this lathery facade of anger. What gives? Do other announcer teams do this?
I can’t recall a sustained period of absolute adolescent behavior by a fan base.
BP urges them to boo louder. I think these frickin’ morans didn’t get what he meant by that. Then again, this should come as no surprise.

Just caught some tornado damage footage on CNN.
Holy hell, it looks horrible out there. It’s incredible no one was killed or seriously injured. So here’s what I want to happen now. Our intrepid, feisty, won’t-roll-over Redlegs resoundingly take this afternoon’s contest and just barely eke out a nailbiting victory on Sunday, too. In between games, Brandon Phillips and Yadier Molina lead a crew that heads out to the airport to help with clean-up.

what's weird is that it doesnt seem so bad on the ground, from anecdotal evidence
it’s like the tornado hit the airport and other industrial places where there were few people on a Friday night, missing the actual residential parts of the city entirely.
Though it would be a heartwarming story if the Reds plane, stranded at Lambert, was unable to take off. The Reds stay in town for the rest of the week and forge strong friendships with the Cardinals. Phillips stays at Pujols’ house. Bailey softens up Carpenter by taking him on a hunting trip in the Ozarks. Baker and LaRussa, I dunno, play Canasta or something.
Flash forward to the end of the season, and the Reds and Cardinals are tied for the NL Central lead. In an unprecedented show of teamwork, they decide to split the playoff spot, and the Carreds go on to win the World Series as left fielder Joey Votto takes home the WSMVP trophy.

I'm sure this was discussed to death elsewhere
but I don’t know how this works. Is it a really horrible idea to let the starter warm back up several hours after he got ready for the game, then sat without pitching?
Still not a candidate.
i've wondered this too...
i imagine that with the uncertainty of the length of a rain delay comes caution with pitchers. volquez warmed up, then he sat idle for 2.5 hours and cooled down. he’d be at greater risk of injury if asked to warm up again and throw a lot of pitches. that would be like asking him to pitch twice in one day. i bet if it was a 20 minute delay Dusty might have told him to get out there since he was still relatively warm.

I’m a little behind the curve, but unless they 60-day someone else – and there aren’t any great candidates based on rehab status – it would need to be Fisher, DRH, Daryl Thompson or Valiquette. Or bump someone from the 40-man.
DRH is the best candidate based on early season performance.

so he will be given plenty of chances.

Thompson got injured in his last appearance, I believe.
So he could go on the 60-day, unless there’s some sort of limit on how many times a man can go on the 60-day DL in a career: Daryl’s certainly approaching it.
I’m also concerned about Rolen. Cortisone shots in April tend to lead to DL stints in July. And I’m not sure if the Reds can weather that.
Let's not kid ourselves. It's really, really, bad.
teams often try to avoid putting minor league players on the 40 man roster on the 60 day dl
Bill Bray was not on the 60 day dl in 2009, because he got hurt in AAA, so by leaving him on the minor league dl he didn’t get service time.

Looking for silver linings because this game was pretty much fucked from the start.
BP’s play on both offense and defense was great, as was his tweet during the rain delay.
Masset looked like good Masset from last year. Jordan Smith looked solid as well.
I am still looking forward to Bruce pulling his head out of his ass on offense.
Let a man come in and do the Popcorn.
Oh, and Gomes continues his bizzarro season with a hit, a BB, a SB and an RBI.
.983 OPS
Let a man come in and do the Popcorn.
all in all i'm just looking to Bruce to pull his head out of his ass
i think he is trying to “earn” his contract.

I'll echo what I said last night...
Sit him for a series. That’ll get Bruce going again.
One bad play over running the ball on wet turf aside
he’s been stellar on defense.
Let a man come in and do the Popcorn.
The problem with outfield errors is that they are usually pretty costly
Bruce is still the best overall RF in the league.

Hmmm
Sheldon wrote that Carlos Fisher is apparently in the clubhouse.

if all the choices
we go with Fisher?

Maybe Fisher
just happened to be in the area and wanted to say Hello. Let’s just hope that.
Sheldon said he flew into Evansville, then drove to St. Louis.
So… no.

I like to think
That he acted on his own here. “They have to use me now!”
What if everyone on the Louisville Bats just showed up
and sat in the clubhouse
LTP is for Stubbs only!
they would need to order more chairs.

It's a regional airport.
I never used it much when I lived there, mainly because I didn’t need to fly to Indianapolis.
But their webbie has a rap intro. Gotta like this!

I kinda agree with you
but I think it is because we are familiar with some success for those other two, but not for Fisher yet (and he’s a bit older).
Fisher also hasn't been that great when he has pitched in the bigs.
And I just don’t think he’s got the same “stuff” as Smith or Ondrusek.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
Fisher has decent velocity and a breaking ball
he is a generic relief pitcher. Some turn into Jordan Smith some turn into Mike Burns.

i guess i would have been more creative
gotten somebody who is stretched out as a starter who can save a total disaster if something terrible happens like Wood gets hurt, or is bombed out in the first, or a rain delay.

Often times...
I think Walt doesn’t spend anytime thinking of this stuff. The guy can work the shit out of a contract negotiation but these DL/Call Up things have been seemingly bad from him.
he is a fisher of men
he has come to annoint Bruce with the power of saints and, hopefully, the plate discipline of Olerud
Let's not kid ourselves. It's really, really, bad.
Anyone see that about Brandon Marshalll?
Sometimes…you just gotta OJ your wife.
Brandon Marshall is a dick
I wouldn’t be surprised if he instigated the fight

So is there a particular date when the Real Reds show up?
Is it May 1, the day of the Red Revolution?
Which is in October anyhow.
