Rolen vs. Santo
I’d agree that this is probably the case of the Bubble Vote.
Santo was deprived because his team never won anything.
Rolen will get a slight edge there. I would not say he is necessarily a Hall of Famer.

The standards for 3B to get in the Hall are too high
There are only 8 3B in the HOF. There are probably at least 3 or 4 more that should have been elected (Santo being one). Rolen and Chipper Jones should also go in eventually too, as well as ARod, though he’s still played more games at SS than 3B so far.

I think Chipper will sail in despite the high standards
He has or will reach a number of major thresholds: 2,500 hits, 1,500 runs/RBIs, ~450 HR, and will probably retire a .300 hitter. He’s also got the MVP and a catchy narrative of playing for the same (very good) franchise his whole career and being the best switch-hitter of his generation.
Rolen will have a much tougher go of it because of the injuries and defensive value, which doesn’t seem to be accounted for much at 3B. A couple of good seasons to close his career won’t appreciably boost his raw hitter numbers, but it could solidify his rep as a leader and push him over the top. Doubtful but possible.
If the Reds win the World Series and he's the team leader
I think he’s a shoo-in. That’ll be two world series championships, at least 6 gold gloves, and at least 6 all star appearances. The lack of serious MVP considerations (outside of 2004 when he finished 4th) will be his biggest impediment, I think.

Do you think writers would actually pay attention to that?
I think he’s deserving now. Add another ring for “his” team and it won’t matter how well he plays, he’ll get more credit than he deserves either way. Writers will love that he brought a rag-tag team together and made them a winner. Very veterany.

I think you overestimate how much credit the BBWAA assigns to leadership
The number of guys that have gotten a material boost for being a leader on a WS team is small. Puckett, I would guess. Probably Willie Stargell. Guys like Reggie Jackson may have also gotten a boost for playoff heroics but would’ve been in anyways.
If the Reds win the title and if Rolen has a signature postseason play or game, he will be much more in the HOF conversation. But I don’t think simply playing on a championship team will help him enough.
I think Willie Stargell is a good comp
Stargell’s got a little more offense, but Rolen’s got considerably more defense. Stargell’s role as Pops on the We Are Family team put him over the top, I think. If Rolen has a solid season (similar to last year) on a World Series team, I think that puts him over the top too. I mean, I think he deserves to be in the HOF either way, but I think he’ll draw more eyes in our proposed scenario.
And I think we both agree that it makes the most sense for the Reds to just go ahead and win the WS so that we can test our argument, right?

warrants mentioning
Rolen had a serious case of the olds in the last postseason. I’d hate for him to look more like Caminiti than Brooks Robinson in 2011 as well.
Let's not kid ourselves. It's really, really, bad.
Yup, but I'll take it a step further
He OPS’d 137 points less in the second half than the first half last year, almost all of the drop coming in slugging. Scares the hell out of me.
