4:10 PM EDT
Salt River Fields at Talking Stick

Chad Reineke vs. Jhoulys Chacin

Coverage:
TV: None; RADIO: None; WEB: Gameday

Partly cloudy. Game time temperature around 80.

First, some late breaking good news: Cueto feels better and has been approved to throw again.

It's week 3 of spring training and I continue to be alternately charmed and enchanted. Salt River Fields at Talking Stick is the site of today's game against the Rockies. I hate to engage in exoticism, but these names really are delightful. I'll tell you what isn't delightful - getting cut. We have our first purge of the spring. John Fay tells us that nine players are headed to the minor league camp: Philippe Valiquette, Daryl Thompson, Yasmani Grandal, Danny Dorn, Chris Denove, Jeremy Horst, Donnie Joseph, Matt Klinker and Justin Lehr. The only (very slight) surprise is Thompson, who's on the 40-man roster. I figured he'd stick around a little longer. I've been feeling around for a sleeper pick for the bullpen, but maybe I should confine those efforts to my bracket. (C'mon UNC-Asheville/Arkansas Little Rock. Your university may be located in two states, but you can unite for one game to justify my horrible pick).

Spring training action this week, especially on Thursday and Friday, is going to be overshadowed by light state gaming law violations and some amateur basketball competition. But there's a lot of spring baseball left to be played and some of it may even come to the brink of relevance. At the halfway point, we still don't know much. With cuts coming in waves, we're going to see more regulars. The results out there have been a noisy hall of smoke and mirrors, but the Reds have to go on something to make these cuts, including the key decisions on who will join the bullpen, rotation and outfield reserves. Inasmuch as spring performance is influential to Dusty and Co., these decisions could go any number of ways. I continue to root a little harder for the players I thought - prior to spring - were set-up well for 2011.

The Chapman is due to answer the Chap Signal today, pitching in relief along with Nick Masset, Bill Bray and Daniel Ray Herrera. As you'll see after the jump, the lineup, minus Alonso and the DH spot, is almost identical to what's expected on Opening Day

hell if i know

but in the NCAA’s effort to milk the un(der)paid athletes for everything they’re worth, they wanted to have every game shown live on the teevee. so TruTV got in on the act, and one of the gametime slots they chose endud up being ours.

collegiate athletes should be unpaid

How does one determine which collegiate athletes get paid?

Basketball and football but not baseball or womens basketball/volleyball? what about paying the college world series participants since its televised?

I don’t think the ncaa will start down that slippery slope. Student athletes across the board….

Some are paid in the form of scholarships

which are regulated by the NCAA.

Of course, those are arranged upfront and don’t really correspond to later performance and revenue generated by the player. But you could probably put a dollar figure on the tuition money + value of the college degree.

And it’s ever so slightly arbitrary that we’re allowed to pay an athlete tuition + fees + room + board + whatever other perks we can legally slip in (tutoring, amazing gym membership, etc.). But no more!

bizarre

You’d think if a game was going to air on a channel devoted to true crime, it would be one involving Ohio State.

j/k It’s funny how all these once specialized channels now show anything that makes them a buck. MTV no longer has music videos. The supposedly science oriented Discovery Channel has shows about ghosts or monster trucks. And TruTV has live sports.

I don't think they're rebranding

They changed their name recently, but the new name reflected changes made long ago.

They moved away from court video years ago. They show a lot of true crime shows now – the kind with reenactments – and “caught on tape” stuff.

Seems an odd fit for sports. Their audience skews female. Maybe they’re trying to change that.

He should probably not try to steal very much any more

Aside from having a terrible success rate last year (16-38), he’s going to be onboard in front of Votto, who’s more likely to walk and see fastball counts.

It would be good to induce more fastballs to be thrown to Votto, but I can’t imagine that’s worth the risk of more than just a big lead off first and some token attempts to keep ’em honest. He really needs to pick his spots given how bad he was last year. His career success rate is 72%, still below the break-even.

I don't think I'd give him the permanent red light

just because of the possible advantages the threat of stealing could provide for Votto (pitchers wanting to come faster to the plate, etc) and the need to keep the defense honest (covering bases, poised for a steal, which possibly opens up holes for Votto too).

But unless he turns back the clock to ‘07, he’s probably doing more harm than good.

Looking it up

Per The Book: 72%, though Tango goes into some detail that it’s actually 69%.

BPro: 70% (2009) and 75% (2004). There may be different methodologies going into these two numbers but the lower run scoring environment since 2004 has a lot to do with the difference.

by ken on Mar 14, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Baseball Analysts had 80%, but apparently that's only for no out steals of 2B

Definitely pays to look things up.

I guess it depends on whether you’re using win value or run expectancy – on top of the run enivornment for that season – but 70-75% seems like a good range.

If BP could get close to his career average, he might be in OK shape. But he seems headed in the other direction.

Yeah, I agree with Charlie that he's lost a step

But what kills me are the pickoffs. He’s had five in each of the past two years. That really sunk his SB% last year.

by ken on Mar 14, 2011 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess it's too simplistic to say "stop stealing," which is my inclination

BP got on base a better rate than he ever has last year but he made more outs in the process of stealing, as a function of a lower rate SB%. If the pick-offs are bound-up with the quickness element that’s causing him to get nailed more often, maybe he needs to stay closer to the bag.

On the other hand, while I don’t have any idea how useful this stat is, he was second on the team Equivalent Base Running Runs last season. So maybe he’s making all that up by advancing farther safely, going 1st-to-3rd, etc.

Maybe what he needs to pick his spots to steal better, while feinting at the steal more, keeping himself in a position to advance on others types of plays.

Not actually knowing what biking distance means (to me it means <5 miles) to a friend it means about 300 miles, I would think it would be hard to find a place within biking distance of GABP that is not either outrageously expensive or a dump. But I don’t know what is in Northern Kentucky either.

Although the gateway to Over the Rhine is trying to revitalize; they have a few new restaurants and bars, I had a decent if not over priced burger at the Senate. They have a number of new rehabbed in that area. But that area still might be really dangerous, I don’t really keep up with local Cincinnati news anymore.

during the campaign, i spent a lot of time in OTR. it’s amazing how talking to people different than you can change your perception. i first learned that during the dean campaign when i was sent into the DC projects to canvass – the places where they have police stations in the apartment complexes. i was blown away, humbled, and kicked in the ass when i learned how informed about politics the people were.

also, i’ve been to many, many dangerous places. sorry that your bait failed.

Cincinnati needs mass transit

They need to improve the bus system so it does more than just connect various neighborhoods to downtown. I think a Denver style light rail would be a good start, and maybe a couple of commuter trains. But than again that is all very expensive.

You have to start somewhere

A north/south streetcar is where you start.

/Kool Aid’d

That being said, you’re absolutely right that public transportation needs to be improved. The problem is that too much of the electorate (not the citizens, the electorate) are too tied to their cars and are unwilling to invest in transportation alternatives that they do not view themselves using.

by FordhamRam on Mar 14, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate that fuckin streetcar

it is so poorly planned it is going to fail, and people are going to say you see nobody wants mass transit.

I honestly believe that mass transit will be a most for cities to retain populations over the next 20 years, oil prices have increased what, about 300% since 2000, if they triple again we are looking at gas at $10.50 a gallon in 2022.

Denver has an excellent and modern transit system, they started construction on their light rail in 1994. It is utilized and useful.

Red Reporter: Driving that train high on cocaine.

by justin007000 on Mar 14, 2011 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, there's been quite a bit of planning

The Cincinnati DoT has extensively studied the projected route to maximize ridership and economic return. It’ll connect the Banks to Findlay, to UC. Furthermore, the infrastructure planning is taking into account the best practices learned from other streetcar systems recently successful in the US.

by FordhamRam on Mar 14, 2011 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

i guess my laymans view is, it really doesn't provide a lot or residential areas access to the city

i am a little unsure of who will use it. I think mass transit needs to help bring people from residential areas downtown. It seems like all this will do is move people who are downtown around. I think providing more connectivity to different neighborhoods would be far more useful, also more expensive.

I just get the feeling since they have had the light rail ballot measures shot down several times they are settling on this because it is the only thing they can afford.

Hamilton County spent $745M on stadiums, imagine if they spent that money on a transit system, buses, light rail, etc.

Red Reporter: Driving that train high on cocaine.

by justin007000 on Mar 14, 2011 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

You can't force it upon the county though.

They voted on light rail a couple of times and soundly defeated those proposals. That doesn’t mean the city program is a bad idea.

They need to develop downtown because there simply is not a way to increase density there without providing mass transit in those neighborhoods. At its peak, OTR housed 250k and it now houses 5k. With the economic development, you’re going to get increased tax revenues which will therefore make future projects easier to finance and become more palpable to voters.

by FordhamRam on Mar 14, 2011 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Serious question

for the people in the heart of OTR, like near Music Hall; where is the nearest grocery store?

I guess the street car will also give businesses on the line more stability because once the tracks are laid, the line will probably stay there for a while. Bus lines can be moved at a whim, but rail lines stay.

I am just worried the street car will be an expensive failure, and people will say you see people don’t like mass transit.

Just like how foxnews claims Americans don’t want to travel by train; rather than look at the fact Amtrak is just really really terrible and outside of the costs (really the northeast corridor) offers just token minimal service.

there’s so much old shit here that all you have to do is register it and not totally destroy it when building on top of it. i cannot tell you how amazing it is just to be walking along a road and suddenly see something thousands of years old – and that’s just the common stuff. the farm was in a village that overlooked baalbek, which has the most preserved roman ruins in the entire world. truly incredible. i am very passionate about history and i can tell you that everytime i saw those giant columns, i couldnt’ take my eyes from them. incredible, really incredible. people should put baalbek on their bucket lists. (also, stop in the hezbollah gift shop at the entrance for great fun. no seriously, there is one.)

Here there is no respect for antiquities like in Greece

At my bar in Beirut, there’s a guy who keeps trying to get me to go “treasure hunting” with him. It’s his “hobby.” He has ZERO experience in archaelogy, and as a Lebanese, thinks he is entitled to “Jewish treasures.” Some of his findings have been stunning, really freaking incredible, but he sells them to private collectors and they never see the light of day. He’s actually found some incredible Phoenician relics that I think could change how we view history, but he wants to spend his $300 a night on booze instead of giving it to people who know what it is. But these things he finds are absolutely gorgeous.

no, i like trains for transportation

and i realize my experience was a small sample size, but even when Amtrak runs on schedule with friendly conductors, it isn’t a great product; especially an Amtrak ticket between Cincinnati and Chicago is $66 and a flight from CVG to O’Hare is $79. Or when driving from Cincinnati to Chicago takes 6 hours, and the train takes 9.

I think this is a lot like National City Lines. If you aren’t familiar in the 30s and 40s several Auto companies, tire companies, and oil companies under the name National City Lines bought urban transportation systems, and ran them into the ground.

They reduced service, reduced stops, made the street cars, buses, etc fail in cities across the country. And as ridership feel off the continued to decrease service, causing ridership to continue to fall off, and than they said, nobody wants to use mass transit when they can buy cars, so they closed most the systems they bought.

I kind of see Amtrak as something similar to that (with less conspiracy), it is so bad nobody wants to use it. It isn’t a practical form of transportation, it is as fast as a bus, and often costs close to a plane ticket.

today

flew back to Chicago for $79 this morning. Granted it was on USA3000 which only has 5 jets and twice a week has to reposition a jet between CVG and O’hare, so they sell cheap tickets.

But last year I did fly home over Easter weekend on Delta for like $110 round trip. Sadly United has discounted most of their deeply discounted weekend fares, so Delta and American followed suit.

I think the Cincinnati market is getting screwed

and will continue to be screwed as long as Delta controls 80% of the market. Hopefully after Delta’s lease on concourse A ends some new competition like Jet Blue and Southwest will have the gate space available to enter the market. Right, other than token less than daily service from USA3000, there is no discount competition, because there despite the fact that Delta shuttered Concourse A there isn’t any gate space available for new airline service.

But overall, I don’t think airfare is that unreasonable. Airfare hasn’t really increased with inflation. Airfare didn’t seriously increase with the recent oil spikes, we are still paying 90s airfare, with 2010 oil prices.

Unfortunately for people who work in the industry; airlines lowered their wages, cut their pensions, laid them off, outsourced their work to third parties, rather than raise prices. Pilots, mechanics, baggage handlers, and gate agents have taken the hit, not the traveling public.

If there was serious price fixing, the airlines wouldn’t have lost something like $30B since deregulation.

Yeah

Terminal 1 has been closed for years. It is a dump worse than Terminal 2, and is simply used for administrative offices.

Delta holds the leases on all of Terminal 3, including the shuttered Concourse A and C. Concourse C will probably eventually be torn down, because no airline will want to use it, it was all Regional jet gates, with not jetways.

Concourse A can be useful, but Delta leases it and won’t let anyone else use their unused gates.

You're right that it's underfunded

and it was, after all, designed to fail. But I think it’s hard to argue that it’s “mismanaged” in any concrete way. As in, what would you do to improve the current management of Amtrak?

They do a pretty good job of keeping costs down and running a system as efficiently as they can, given that they control almost none of the rails and are forced to run unprofitable routes.

And while I’m making one more train post in a dead thread, I will point out that while the route that Justin took sucks, there are other routes that are done reasonably well in the US. The NE Corridor, obviously, is head and shoulders above the rest, but there is frequent service in California that serves a lot of areas quite well.

And routes in NC and Maine are good examples of what Ohio and Wisconsin should have had: enough startup funding to subsidize the fares so that they’re reasonable (still not much money) boosts ridership enough that they can have frequent service for not much. Sure, both have started with reasonably slow service and made incremental improvements, but both provide valuable services at a fraction of the price of more road building. And both are administered by Amtrak.

But I guess it’s easier to make a blanket statement that Amtrak is mismanaged.

Still not a candidate.

I think Milwuakee is like 80 miles away, and if they could get to Chicago in less than an hour and a half, for $15 each way, it wouldn’t be a bad deal, as they wouldn’t have to drive to Chicago, deal with terrible Chicago traffic, and outrageous Chicago parking.

holy crap

Fukushima is going to hell in a handbasket.

Another explosion seems to have breached containment in one reactor. The spent fuel in another reactor, that had previously been considered safe, has caught fire.

Radiation levels have risen into the danger zone, and they are being forced to evacuate their workers. If they all have to leave, all three reactors will likely meltdown.

They are telling people to shelter in place, staying in their homes with windows and vents shut. But a lot of people have no homes, because of the tsunami.

I can just imagine what would be going on here if we suffered the disasters they have. There would be looting, riots, probably shooting.

But in Japan, they don’t even think of looting or rioting. They just don’t think that would help. They wait in line for hours for food, gas, water, and if it runs out before they get to the front of the line, no one gets angry.

if you are, you have my sympathies. I was in recovery from that a year ago. It was tough, difficult, hard, and sucked; but you know that. I was really sad and worthless at first, than i was really really angry, and than i realized it was good while it was good, and bad when it was bad and now try to realize i had a great time before it got bad. There was nothing terribly special about my experience…

That probably doesn’t help, but grieve for a while it is normal and healthy.

"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."

by crolfer on Mar 15, 2011 2:37 AM EDT up reply actions

The key is you are young

the ex fiance and i broke up for 10 days a little less than a year before we broke up for good. I was devastated both times. It can crush you. Most of our relationship was long distance, i was in ada she was in pittsburgh, or i was in Chicago and she was in Hamilton. I got very use to talking to her on the phone before bed, it took me a couple of months to get use to not talking to her every night.

But overtime I got healthy, realized what we had was amazing when it worked, and I am a better person for it, and i am in my early to mid 20s so I have plenty of time to find somebody else. Honestly I’ve grown more as a person in the last year of being single than I did in the previous three years of 2 serious girlfriends, it turned out to be really good for me.

While this may be a bit self indulgent on my part, I am telling you this because you can’t see a silver lining right now. I know I was there, most the males on this board have been there, but if things don’t work out you will.

It's really hard to have perspective

but as crazy as PeteyHendrix’s relationship ideas are, he’s onto something with his rule of “no serious relationships before 25.” I wouldn’t go that far, but I would reiterate that it’s especially important to try to have some perspective when you’re still young.

She’s great, but she’s not the only great woman you’ll ever meet. And maybe you blew it, or maybe she did, but odds are that you’ll blow it even worse before all is said and done—and you’ll be dumped in a much more ridiculous way too, at some point.

Or maybe she’ll get over herself and things will be great again, but probably not. Either way, it’s by no means the end of your relationship career.

Still not a candidate.

by Gray on Mar 15, 2011 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

'xactly

And obviously I don’t know this girl personally, but in my estimation anyone who is “not sure who I am right now” is not mature enough for a real relationship. Either she can’t tell you what she’s really thinking (this line is often used as a cover) or she legitimately has self-awareness issues, and either way you don’t want none of that noise.

Of course, it’s easy to say this from a distance. Right now it still hurts and that’s really all that matters. Right now, the best thing you can do is try to keep things in perspective and not do anything that can’t be undid.

Chin up, crolfs. You’re a good kid.

Chuck’s right in that "not sure who I am right now" is an ambiguous line is often used as a cover. I’ve been crushed many times, but not in one case do I wish things had worked out with any of my exes. It’s all part each person’s painful journey to a life full of love that you will find fulfilling.

Now try to just date around between now and when you’re on your track to your life goals. But first, have some pals drag you to a strip club. It’s therapeutic!
