Travis Wood vs. Ervin Santana

Coverage:
TV: None; RADIO: 700 WLW, KLAA; WEB:  GamedayGameday Audio

Sunny. Game time temperature around 80.

I wish I had more time to meditate on this game, but life intervened. I'm hoping to see Travis Wood turn in a good performance so that there can be no ambiguity about his spot in the rotation. The Cactus League schedule is packed, with only one off-day scheduled the rest of the way. And every game from now on is carried on WLW.

Go Reds!

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

teh Fay

reports that Dusty has hinted that Heisey has made the roster.

Dusty Baker made it sound like Chris Heisey has the team basically made over Fred Lewis and/or Jeremy Hermida as an extra outfielder.

"He was here before," Baker said. "I know what Heisey can do. I’m trying to use the past and the present to see what the other guys can do. Plus, Heisey can pinch-hit well and we need somebody right-handed, so we don’t have all left-hander like we had a few years ago. Heisey can run. You can put him late for defense. He’s a good outfielder. Out of guys returning from last year, he’s the only guy who play center field, other than Stubbs."

The center field factor is big one. Baker likes to have a true center fielder on the roster. He has not played Lewis there at all.

Dusty doesn’t think Sap is ready for prime time yet.

And cuts are probably coming tomorrow.

Ready or not, you pretty much had to know he was a numbers casualty

The good thing is he’ll be sitting in AAA and would be a first callup if an outfielder went down.

by rorschach1979 on Mar 13, 2011 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

so is it between Lewis and Hermida for the 5th spot?

Lewis is on the 40-man, no?

I’d say that decides it.

me too

that’s why I thought the wording was weird. I don’t think there was really ever a fight for 5th outfielder.

"College actually kind of beat that out of me, making me more, well, of an asshole."

by Cy Schourek on Mar 13, 2011 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, the wording is strange

I suppose it’s possible they will go with only four OFers, but if they go with five, Heisey might make it along with Lewis, not instead of.

Looks like Heisey's a lock.

Via the Fya.
So, that leaves Lewis in too and the outfield is a done deal.

Meaning Lewis won't really be in Center except in case of emergency.

Not that I blame Boobs? Seeing less competent people in jobs your are qualified for should piss you off.

Travis Wood is pitching a great game. But, the Angels are fielding a crap team.

I see that his old ways of getting people to fly out to right are working.

Gomes sure has been fantastically awful this Spring. Frazier too. At least Coz, Valaika, Negron, Mesoraco have been hitting.

Not sure

but I think he can get there from here … even considering his “pet student” status.

Really?

That seems long. And increases the chances of one half of Yasarasco getting traded. And Grandal can’t be traded til the summertime…

This will definitely soften the blow of the Yonder/Mesoraco for Hanley deal that's going to happen this summer

I was about to tweet this

I really, really wonder if they are thinking about trading him. The Red Sox are actively looking for a catcher, and it’s possible Mesoraco has impressed them enough that they are willing to deal Hanigan. I’d rather they deal Hernandez, but I bet Hanigan is much more tradeable right now.

by nycredsfan on Mar 13, 2011 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

*of course, I meant post this.

Also, the point of signing him first is that he’ll maybe have more trade value as a guy who is very cheap for the next 4 years. Is this his last pre-arb year?

"Penus, stale beer, and day old hot dogs. Love it"--justin007000

by nycredsfan on Mar 13, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't really see how that makes me him more tradeable.

He has yet to play 100 games in a season, and he is under control for the next 3 years, and probably won’t make more than this.

Can we get Jon Lester?

Red Reporter: Driving that train high on cocaine.

by justin007000 on Mar 13, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He hits arb next year.

So, 500K or so of that 4million is this year’s minimum salary.

So he makes 3.5 million total for 2 arb years. Given his good defense and crazy high OBP, combined with what busted ass crappy catchers have been getting lately, that’s really really cheap.

Maybe they just want to get some cost control and plan on keeping him. Who knows….

"Penus, stale beer, and day old hot dogs. Love it"--justin007000

by nycredsfan on Mar 13, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

i would get cost control

and i don’t really have a problem with this for the Reds. But i don’t know if it makes him more tradeable.

Red Reporter: Driving that train high on cocaine.

by justin007000 on Mar 13, 2011 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends on what the trading team is looking for.

But generally speaking, cost certainty is always a good thing. He was a 2.4 bWAR player last year. Another year like that this year and he’ll cost way more than $3.5m over his first 2 arb years.

Jocketty tells Fay that they have said no when teams ask about their catchers. Of course, that could just be Jocketty lying to Fay like normal.

Hanigan's deal:

$350K signing bonus
$450K this year
$1.2 m in 2012
$2.05 m in 2013

There are 800K worth of escalators and performance bonuses included.
Seems pretty reasonable to me.

So... trade Monie or:

2012-2013 = Hanigan/Mesoraco; Grandal emergency
2013- = Mesoraco/Grandal / till one gets expensive or is traded.

So much so that I believe it positively impacts his trade value.
