RR Community Prospect Rankings: Another year in the books
5 weeks of voting have resulted in your best guess for the list of Reds top prospects for 2011. NYC compiled what the so-called "experts" have had to say, so let's see how our list compares.
Listed here is the final RR list, plus mine and NYC's individual lists. The "honorable mention" spots are the players who received the most votes throughout the final week but didn't make the list.

Another item of note. The Reds 13th round pick from last season, pitcher Lucas O'Rear, got injured playing basketball and will miss a good portion of next season with a broken ankle. If you're unfamiliar with O'Rear and his story, he's the guy who the Reds drafted out of Northern Iowa (even though UNI doesn't have a team) and was the 6th man of the year in the Missouri Valley conference last year on the hoops team. It's a tough blow for the Reds, as he put together a nice debut for them last year and didn't really have a future in basketball. Kind of raises the question though: was it a mistake for the Reds to draft a kid with such a significant injury risk waiting in another sport? Is there anything they could have done to better protect their investment?

I don't see drafting O'Rear as a mistake.
If they had taken him in the top seven or so rounds, maybe, but a 13th-round pick is a roll of the dice anyway. If you’re going to gamble, that’s an appropriate area to do so.

Scott Carroll. Solid choice for "HM" BeeK.
He’s a bit down the depth chart, but I could see him getting a chance as a reliever with the Reds pretty soon.

How hard does he throw?
He’s a pretty big guy, isn’t he? Is he a power arm?
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
He's 6'5 and was recruited to play football at Purdue behind Orton
In the 2008 BA prospect handbook it said his fastball topped out at 93. Maybe it’s improved a little?
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
Yeah, I think it can touch 95
and probably would pretty consistently if he was a reliever.

He's like Jordan Smith with better minor league numbers.

if he'd been drafted higher
I could see asking him to give up basketball. But a 13th rounder? Probably never going to see the big leagues anyway.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I think I would have asked him.
Is it just me, or does it seem like basketball is the cuprit for most of these casual sport injuries? No contact sports (including basketball) being standard in a contract sounds good to me.

but i mean it is hard to penalize him.
he is getting paid peanuts, he probably doesn’t have much a signing bonus they could demand returned.
When Aaron Boone tore his ACL in an off season basketball game the Yankees voided his contract because he violated the terms of his contract.

Meh,
You’re a pro baseball player, act like one, I don’t care what you are paid. Perhaps you don’t penalize him at all, but if it’s in the contract perhaps the injury does not happen in the first place.

Are we talking about Boone or O'Rear?
O’Rear wasn’t playing pickup.

Looks like 'creds is an upside guy and BeeK is a floor guy.
Amirite or amiwrong?
In other news, my brain CT came back clean! No brain surgery!
Great news!
Congrats. Also, I didn;t make the Jake – jsl connection until Cy pointed it out.
And a clean bain scan is better than one coming back “negative,” where they scan for a brain and don’t find anything.

Yeah, back to the old screenname since I'm not writing anymore.
And I’m encouraged by the results. Magnesium it is!
When did Cy point it out?
Yo, Chuck.

Why is Kyle Waldrop listed as a Minnesota prospect?
Joey Votto on Colin Cowherd: "I don’t know who he is"
Oooh... Confusing
There’s also a pitcher in the Twins system by the same name.

do not have a link, might be on SC site
but he was playing 2B for Venezuela, so all signs point to it being him. They moved on before I could get a good look (without replaying it, sadly)

Further proof that the "experts" are making shit up, just like us.
AOL Fanhouse Top 100 Prospects.
Reds on the list:
8. Chapman
49. Mesoraco
59. Hamilton
69. Alonso
No Grandal, and that’s easily the lowest I’ve seen Alonso (and maybe the highest I’ve seen Chapman)
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka
Alonso below Hamilton?
Could Hamilton be a better player than Alonso? Yes. Could Hamilton just as easily never sniff the majors? Yes.
I can’t believe Alonso is rated that low. Wow.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
the fay
points out that with four players, the Reds have more prospects on that list than any other team in the division.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Since O'Rear is laid up anyway, can we go ahead and do the Tommy John now?
Two guys I’ve read really good things about lately: LaMarre and Grandal. Saw Grandal compared to Victor Martinez. I wouldn’t mind seeing him get three games a week behind the plate and three more in LF.

Moving Grandal around is an interesting idea.
Unless they really think he can improve a ton by catching everyday, I’d love to see them experiment like that.

how did the cat from ohio univ do last season?

I don't get how guys like Alonso, Grandal & Hamilton can get rated ahead of Yorman Rodriguez
I guess being a high draft pick gets you better status than your performance or ability?
Alonso is 5 years older than Rodriguez and still in the minors struggling to reach 0.300 batting average with nominal power.
Rodriguez should have a couple seasons in the outfield in Cincy under his belt by the time he’s Alonso’s age.
I don't think that's fair
Alonso may be five years older, but he’s only been in the minors a couple of years – same as Yorman, really.
Alonso did fine in AAA, especially considering that was recovering from a broken hamate, which notoriously saps power for a year or so. If he weren’t blocked by Votto, I doubt he’d spend any more time in the minors.
Yorman has had one good year…in rookie ball. At this stage in his career, there’s still a good chance that he never even makes it to the show.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
There are huge question marks around Yorman
He’s got all the tools in the world, but his plate discipline and pitch recognition are still very rudimentary. They might get better, but if not, will he be able to hit more advanced pitching? Also, by all accounts he is going to grow enough that he’ll be pushed to a corner OF spot. If that happens, will he develop enough power to stick there?
Alonso, OTOH, could start in the bigs at 1B right now and probably be league average at least. There’s a ton of value in that.
