Reds close to Saving Sean Marshall
According to Bruce Levine at ESPNChicago.com, the Reds and Cubs are close to a deal that would bring Sean Marshall to Cincinnati in exchange for Travis Wood and two minor leaguers. Those had better be some really minor leaguers. Nickname credit should go to HighlifeMan21.

Could you point out to me on MLBTR where you saw Billy Hamilton will also be included in the trade? I don’t see that. Also, John Fay just put up on his blog that the Reds are trying to acquire Marshall but a deal was not imminent.

The guy is an awesome reliever, and I wouldn’t mind seeing him closing games. But, he is a free agent after the season.

To me Wood is expendable.
He had an awesome 2010, but I think 2011 is close to what we should expect. I am mainly going off of what scouts expected of him. Plus, his GB% has been terrible.

I dunno
Marshall is as good as they come, but I’m leery of extensions for relievers on general principle.
I’m also a bit nervous about draining our rotation depth. I would feel much more comfortable with him stashed in AAA in case of the inevitable injury.
All that said though, I’d be cool with the deal if the prospects involved aren’t major.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Dec 21, 2011 10:51 AM EST up reply actions
Depending on the “prospects” in the deal, I’m definitely supporting this one. If a Billy Hamilton or Daniel Corcino is included, I’m a bit leery. Hopefully they can take someone like Sappelt and Henry Rodriguez.
If they were prospects like that I'm sure they would have been named.

Could Travis Wood step in and become a steady, low-WHIP closer for us?
Nope. I would be thrilled if he could, but none of us have that kind of confidence in him.
He only has an outside chance of cracking a MLB rotation someday, and that possible potential is a less-valuable commodity to the Reds right now.

Sad, in a way. I don’t think Wood will amount to a whole lot, but I really liked his debut. And, you know, first impressions and all.
Wood is a guy most organizations wouldn't mind having
None of us would be shocked if he consistently throws around 200 innings with an ERA+ around 110.
But I also wouldn’t be shocked if he is out of baseball in 5 years.

And other than his solid debut, there isn’t a ton else there suggesting that.

He had a strong minor league track record.
He has a history of striking out minor league hitters, and his command has improved.
I think his top level ceiling is as a number 2 starter, I think his floor (if he stays healthy) is as a 5th starter innings eater type.

Yes he was
but a lot of pitchers are not that good their second season.
I think the way he pitched in 2010 is his ceiling, and 2011 is his floor. Even with as unimpressive as Wood was last year, those types of numbers make him a 5th starter on most teams.

I was just identifying good teams with bad 5th starters, but if you want more recent evidence
Phil Hughes and A.J. Burnett and the 2011 Yankees.
Brad Penny was pretty bad as the 4th starter for the 2011 Tigers,
The role of the fifth starter seems more to be to keep the other 4 guys on 4 days rest rather than to actually be a good pitcher.

I have an idea.
Instead of arguing about just how shitty Wood’s year was last year, let’s talk about if we really believe he can maintain his 2010 numbers. Because if he really is the 2011 version of himself, no one will miss him.
He was good in 2010. Good K rate, good BB rate, but he was also lucky. His peripherals indicate he should’ve had about a 4.00 ERA. I think that’s absolutely the best case scenario, but I also think it’s highly unlikely he maintains that, mainly because of last year’s debacle. He’s an extreme fly ball pitcher who saw his K rate and BB rate each go in the wrong direction by about 1 per 9.
It’s a big assumption and takes a lot of faith to think he’ll magically return to his 2010 form.
It feels so nice to be back to normal

You're assuming that after not quite 2 years in the Majors
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
Eh. Maybe.
But his minors performances were all over the map too. He looks like The Most Inconsistent Pitcher In The World.
And baseball has a long history of soft-tossing lefties dominating the minors but struggling in the majors.
I just think you are giving him way too much credit for 2010 and ignoring his tools and bad most recent performance.
It feels so nice to be back to normal
I have no idea what Wood will do
I would not be shocked if he pitches 210 innings next year with an ERA of 4.35, I also wouldn’t be shocked if he bounced between the bullpen, the rotation, and Iowa.
In the minors he was pretty good at striking batters out, and his command improved.
I also don’t think of him as a “soft tosser” his average fastball was 89, but he could run it up to 92 or 93 when he wanted to, which is plenty fast enough.
I really just think an MLB ready young healthy starting pitcher, with some history of big league success, even if his future is a bit of a question mark, is too much to give up for one year of a relief pitcher.
It is entirely possible that Wood would put up a greater WAR than Marshall next year just from the virtue of spending a full season in the rotation.

you act like it is unreasonable that he will end up picking up 100 MLB innings
Even if Chapman exceeds expectations, he won’t be in the rotation by September.
Cueto’s health is an issue until he proves otherwise.
Arroyo may very well pitch himself out of the rotation.
Starting pitching is not a surplus for the Reds, and having 7 guys who can start, greatly increases the chances of the Reds not having a starting pitching disaster.

If Sean Marshall regresses a bit
which is possible for a 30 year old relief pitcher who has had his work load over the last 2 years, and Wood improves a bit, yes I think that is possible.

is it possible that Wood improves, throws well over 100 IP, Marshall slips or gets hurt, and Wood ends with more value by the end of the season? Yes, it’s possible. But I wouldn’t say it’s likely

especially if this year doesn’t go as planned. Or if there are a rash of rotation injuries. But we still have 6 viable rotation candidates for 5 spots, and LeCure and even Fisher could make spot starts. And didn’t we re-sign Chad Reineke?

the trade would again be Walt trading from a surplus

The only quibble I have
is the notion that the Reds are trading from a surplus. Teams never get through a whole season using only five starters, or even six. Wood represents a perfectly acceptable #7 starter, which is something this team will need this year.

which is why I’m okay with the deal, if it even happens (depending on the prospects, of course). But I was only pointing out that we don’t have a starting pitching surplus from which to deal.

This is thye reason I lean in favor of this deal
Marshall instantly becomes our best reliever. Wood is merely a backup plan.
Well
If you believe pitcher WAR is worth a damn (I think it’s decent enough), then he was better than damn-near worthless last year (1.1 fWAR). He threw 100 innings that guys like Chad Reineke and the ghost of Kip Wells would otherwise have thrown.
But my point is not that Travis Wood is too valuable to trade for Sean Marshall. I think it’s a fine trade. My point though is that we do not have a rotation surplus from which to deal. The Rays do. But we don’t.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Dec 21, 2011 3:19 PM EST up reply actions
Sometimes there's a fWAR I don't agree with at all
This is one of them. Wood threw 106 innings bad innings, pretty close to replacement level imo. To me that’s much closer to the 0.2 bWAR then something approaching an average SP.

I’d rather have him as a 6 or 7 starter than Reineke. But I guess it’s all moot now, anyway.

He's kind of the Arcade Fire of Reds players
Not terrible, but certainly nothing special, but the fact that every commentator was lining up to blow him in 2010 and give him all the credit for that team winning made me hate him.

Good comparison, but I'll modify it a bit.
He used to be freaking awesome (Funeral), but every year, we have more and more evidence of declining skills and mediocrity.

I can dig this
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
Yep. Funeral is good. Neon Bible is passable.
I feel like every music critic assumed The Suburbs was going to be awesome, then anointed it as record of the year without really listening to it.
OCab makes the playoffs a lot. OCab used to be awesome. OCab circa 2010 was a very meh player who got way too much undeserved credit.
It feels so nice to be back to normal
also, i paid no attention to o-cab until he was a red
& i had no idea who arcade fire was until the grammy fiasco
A lot of the love for Funeral is based on the story behind it.
The emotion from all the deaths of their friends and family members seemed to add not only context, but also created a much more concentrated byproduct in terms of the writing.
You can see the same thing happening with Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. The deconstruction of the band member’s romantic relationships created not only great song fodder, but also seemed to force the artists into that extra gear. Granted, Fleetwood Mac’s catalog as a whole outshines Arcade Fire.

Let's not forget about the other side who derided him for blocking the slick-fielding, slugging SS Paul Janish
Hell I remember people claiming Janish could hit.260-.275 if he could only get the playing time. Stupid Dusty, why didn’t he play Janish instead of that bum OCab? Well, 2011 is why.

I thought the argument was more that
Cabrera couldn’t hit worth shit either, so we might as well take shitty hitting and good fielding rather than shitty hitting and shitty fielding.

he got his shot and now we know
thats more what I wanted to see, is if he was worth any sort of extended playing time. We ended up finding out how good he was when we had a limited number of other options (though why it took so long to promote Cozart is still beyond me).
Agree with you totally on Cozart
For all my somewhat fake/somewhat sincere Edgard love, I wanted to see Cozart pretty quickly.

Honestly
I would rather he not close. The way Dusty uses his closers, I think Marshall would be best utilized as set-up man who would see more high-leverage situations. Kinda like how Masset was the one called upon to get out of 2-on/1-out situations in the 7th or 8th. Coco would only come in to start the 9th.
If we can get Marshall and use him with Masset as the shut-down set up men, I’d be just fine getting a titular closer on the cheap.

I honestly like the closer by committee idea with Arredondo, Lurch, Marshall, and LeCure.
Dusty’s insistence on using the closer in save situations with complete disregard to common sense is a serious hindrance on the team. If we have 4 plus arms and ride the hot hand a la the Nasty Boys we’ll keep them all fresher and probably end up with more wins.

Right
As convincing as the new baseball wisdom is to us, Dusty will have none of it. He needs a closer. And if that’s the case, then I’d rather have the interchangeable high-leverage set-up men be the best we can get.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Dec 21, 2011 11:41 AM EST up reply actions
He can be Stopper!
When they put me in charge, there will be a “Stopper” role and a “Closer” role. The Stopper will be the best reliever on the team, and he goes out in the high-leverage situations.
The closer pitches the 9th, if it seems like a good idea, unless the leverage is high and the Stopper is still available.
Relievers want to close, because that’s where the money is. By putting a name on it and hyping it, I give the best reliever some ammo come contract time, and he happily mows down the opponents 3-4-5 with the game on the line in the 8th.
BTW, I’m ready to be in charge, whenever you guys put me there.

On average the 9th inning is still going to have the highest leverage, because it’s the 9th inning.
The Reds will have to move another pitcher to get a closer
I posted on the other thread that they have 12 men for 12 spots, with a rotation of Latos, Cueto, Leake, and Arroyo, and a bullpen of Marshall, LeCure, Ondrusek, Bray, Arredondo, and Masset, and they guaranteed a spot for Chapman, and Bailey is out of options.

like I always new the payroll disparity existed, seeing that the Reds were never able to land big time free agents. But at least no team dominated the N.L. Central due to money alone.

No dynasties though
Since 1995 the Central has gone something like this:
1995-Reds
1996-Cardinals
1997-Astros
1998-Astros
1999-Astros
2000-Cardinals
2001-Astros
2002-Cardinals
2003-Cubs
2004-Cardinals
2005-Cardinals
2006-Cardinals
2007-Cubs
2008-Cubs
2009-Cardinals
2010-Reds
2011-Brewers
The Cardinals, Astros, and Cubs have pretty much evenly shared the division. With the Brewers, Reds, Pirates making horrible decisions that ruined their clubs for years.

They have most definitely dominated the Central, with the Astros and Cubs putting up a few good stretches.
Astros pretty much did the same thing
and maybe they were a dynasty, but they weren’t winning simply because they could outspend their opponents, they were winning because they made good decisions.

Except, you know, that what they're doing kind of isn't smart
Trading a guy who’s an asset for you and probably costing you below market value for a guy who has “back-end starter ceiling” potential is not really good rebuilding plan.

I think if 2011 is Wood's floor and 2010 is his ceiling, and the likely outcome is in betweem
Wood alone should be enough, especially considering Marshall is due $3.1M, and their are free agent relief pitchers who can be got without costing the Reds a player.

I wonder
if Sheldon has better sources than everyone else, or worse.
They don’t seem too happy with this deal at RLN. In addition to the years of control, cost, and reliever volatility issues, they seem to like Wood more than we do: two of Wood’s top four age 24 comparables are Maholm and Romero.

I would bet he ends up being more like Maholm than Romero.

Do we still get draft picks if we offer arbitration and he walks at the end of the year? Absolutely great trade if so.

I think we end up with something
From what I found last night if you want the type A compensation you have to offer a one year salary based on the average of the top 125 players (works out to $12M or thereabouts this year). Not sure if relievers are different though. Truthfully I have no idea, but I think that might be a key part of this deal.

Good command, flyball prone lefty, that can hit 92-93
but sits around 89. Projects as a 4-5 starter, some people think he could be a 2-3 guy based off of his 2010 ML numbers.
Let a man come in and do the Popcorn.

Beat me to it
I’d agree with this, with the caveat:
His command is OK, but not that great. The only way he becomes more than a back of the rotation guy is if he develops a truly superior ability to locate his pitches.
He did have one awesome, near perfect game in 2010 against Philly (unfortunately, the team gave him zero run support, which was a common problem vs. the Phillies.)

When he is good, he is very very good.

could end up a back-up catcher at some point. Webb I’ve heard of but don’t know anything about.
It is reported that The deal is "pending physicals that have to be taken by all four players."
It does not sound like these are PTBNL, but rather lesser minor leaguers.

Webb was an 8th round pick on 2006
6-foot-4 lefthander…….did well in low minors, don’t know about his stuff…..was a middle reliever mostly in AA last season. 1-7 with a 4.41 ERA…..36 games, 5 starts. He had 36 walks in 69 innings, which isn’t good, but he did have 89 strikeouts.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Did some mistakenly think he was named...
Travis Coddington?
Trying to pull off "having no money and talking to no one" as well as the Reds have.
I can tell you about Travis Wood
He works between 87 and 90, with an average fastball of 89.3, but he can top out at 92 or 93. He isn’t a soft tossing Jamie Moyer style lefty but he isn’t a burn burner either.
When the Reds drafted him he threw 95, but he had a shoulder injury in 2008, but he came back from that and hasn’t had any health issues since. He threw over 200 innings combined between AAA and MLB in 2010.
He has decent but not spectacular command.
He isn’t going to lead the league in K’s but I you can expect him to strike out 7/9IP.
He is a flyball pitcher.
He has a real nice cutter, which made some of us dream of Cliff Lee when we first saw Wood pitch in 2010.
He has a decent change up.
He is a better pitcher than he was in 2011, but he probably isn’t as good as he was in 2010. In an ultra best case scenario he is a #2/3 level pitcher, but bottom of the rotation innings eater is also likely. I wouldn’t be surprised if he puts up 1 or 2 fine seasons with an ERA around 3.8, over 200+ innings, but I think an ERA around 4.6 is a most likely outcome for him.
I know little about him personally other than he is from Arkansas, and doesn’t seem to cause any trouble in the clubhouse.
Contributing little more than than snark and wittiness to SBN since 2007.
he looks like a child molester
but seems like a nice enough guy. He’s never been suspended or arrested, which can’t be said of all our pitchers.

He works out with Cliff Lee in Arkansas in the off-season.
I’m not sure I like this trade, but it’s probably good news for Travis. There will be a lot more opportunity for him in Chicago. He’d probably be optioned to AAA if he stayed in Cincinnati, just because there are so many other starting pitchers, most without options.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

Bray is not nearly as good as Marshall
Marshall has been one of the best relievers in baseball the last 2 years. He Ks a lot, doesn’t walk hardly any, and has a crazy high GB%.
And to get away from stats for a moment, he’s one of the only relievers I can remember who has consistently made Joey Votto look foolish.
Some of Votto’s worst at bats I’ve ever seen have come against Marshall. That’s gotta count for something.

Fair enough.....BUT
since Marshall moved to the ’pen full time in 2010, this has decidedly not been the case.
9 PAs, 4 strikeouts, .143/.333/.286 line.
The sample is tiny, but even the overall sample counting Marshall as a starter is only 17 PAs. I must just remember some of those 9 PAs from the last 2 years.

Sean is better, but last year they were very similar lefty relievers in a number of important ways:
SEAN VS BRAY:
ERA 2.26 vs 2.98
GP 78 vs 79
WHIP 1.097 vs 1.076
H/9 7.9 vs 6.5
HR/9 0.1 vs 0.6
BB/9 2.0 vs 3.2
K/9 9.4 vs 8.2
AGE 28 vs 28

Um,

Not really a strong argument
The problem wasn’t a lack of a closer. Dave Weathers was a pretty good closer in 2007, the only year he was the Reds exclusive closer. He had 33 saves in 39 opportunities (84%). With the Reds Coco recorded 150 saves in 174 opportunities (86%).
The problem wasn’t a lack of a closer, the problem was the Reds had nobody to get the ball from the starter to closer or to bail out the starter in the 6th, 7th, or 8th innings.

Coco was part of the reason the bullpen improved in 2008
but he wasn’t the whole reason.
The Reds also added Mike Lincoln (who was serviceable while unspectacular), got a full healthy season out of Bill Bray, and Jeremy Affeldt, and used Burton as the 8th inning guy for the first half of the season.
2008 was the first time the Reds had a complete bullpen since the great fire sale of 2003.

I think LeCure would get majorly exposed as a closer
He’s at best a 7th inning guy in my mind. I loved what I saw last year from him, but I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it was all smoke and mirrors. His primary value right now is emergency starter, something I think he is well suited for.
i don't think he has much value as the "6th starter".
As a starter he survived with pedestrian stuff and a good sense of “how to pitch”.
As a reliever his stuff improved a bit. His strike out rate last year as a starter was in the 6’s, it was in the 8’s as a reliever.
In 2010 when most of his work came as a starter for the Reds, his average fastball was 88.6, last year when most of his work was in the bullpen his average fastball was 90.3.
I watched LeCure and I saw a David Weathers type of reliever. Nothing about him blows you away, but he has 2 good pitches, really good command of them.

LeCure could be a closer, but I doubt Dusty/Walt sees him as such.
I’m a big believer in LeCure and like him as a guy that can be whatever the bullpen requires on a particular day. If the starter goes out after 4 innings, Sam can give you 3 innings. If there’s a high leverage situation in the 6th, 7th or 8th, he can get out you of a jam.

I agree about Arredondo
He’s a year removed from his Tommy John surgery, so his control may get a lot better this season.
I’d much rather the Reds go in with the bullpen they have and spend those dollars on some hitting rather than spend for a closer.
Heck, if Aroldis pans out in the rotation, I want to see Homer Bailey as closer.

better than the guy we acquire to be our closer?
someone has to go if we bring someone into the fold, LeCure seems like an obvious choice.
I think BBB is right and Chappy should start the year in AAA
LeCure proved last year he is far more valuable as a reliever than a starter. LeCure’s big issue was getting through the order for the 3rd time as a starter. As a reliever he can dial up his fastball to 92-93 and use that and his wicked slider as his two main pitches. I’d rather see Lurch go to AAA than LeCure at this point.
Maybe I’me just crazy and enamored with him because of the mustache, though.

Hell make Lurch the closer
he was steady and useful last.
I am completely confident that with the 6 current guys plus either Bailey or Chapman will make a fine bullpen even if none of them were “closers” before. I am guessing that even if the Reds do not name a closer before the season starts, by about May or June the bullpen roles will shake out and a closer will be known. Hell maybe, since none of them are making really big money, they could even have a closer A and closer B, like Jack McKeon did in 1999 with Danny Graves and Scott Williamson.

He says they’ve talked to him, but it’s not like Walt seems eager to bring him back.
It feels so nice to be back to normal
Ghost Hunters
is showing the baseball hall of fame episode tonight. Buncha Red Sox fans.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
was it worth watching?
They had a local one, for me, at Wright Patterson AFB. Disappointing. i like the show, but sometimes it is feeling more like the other “ooh, orbs” type shows than it used to.
... I still say it was a touchdown, got tammit.
I really want to go to Waverly Hills in Louisville, it's supposed to be haunted
"Wait, you think I'm being mean to the pretend orangutan?" -- battlekow
Its really creepy
They do a “haunted house” there every year in the fall, but they have overnight camping tours in the summer. I know a few people that have done that and were pretty freaked out.
@DavefrmLville.....is fun to follow on twiiter!

not that great
I kept wanting them to turn the lights up so I could see more of the place. I mean, it’s not like ghosts don’t appear in daylight.
I’m reading a book about the ghosts of Old Louisville, and it’s really interesting. Makes me want to go to Louisville and check it out.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
people seem to like this deal for both teams
Reds acquire reliever Sean Marshall from Cubs
According to FanGraphs’ Wins Above Replacement statistic, Marshall was the game’s third-most valuable relief pitcher in 2012 — behind only Craig Kimbrel of Atlanta and Jonathan Papelbon of Boston.
He will give the Reds a high-leverage lefty in the bullpen and allow them to move hard-throwing Aroldis Chapman into the starting rotation. If the Reds don’t find a closer this offseason (Francisco Cordero is a free agent), Marshall has the skills to step into the ninth-inning role.
Theo likes to trade players as they near free agency, and the new CBA gives him even more incentive to do that.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I wonder if the two minor leaguers will ever be revealed
Perhaps they will keep it a secret forever, and these two poor bastards will become chicken fuckers without ever even knowing it.
Oh, and if one of them turns out to be Corcino, I am putting strychnine in Walt’s Metamucil.

You know what will suck?
When they make it to the Show, and they still don’t know what team they are playing for, so every at bat, it’s like, should I try to get a hit? or am i really on the other team? if i pop up should i try to catch it?
poor bastards.

Keith Law on twitter
said the Reds are NOT giving up Corcino, but the two players are “not zeros” and that Cubs fans should be happy.
Hmmm…..Travis Webb and ????

good point
But he’s been pretty mediocre. In fact, he’d been kinda terrible. Barely hitting his weight, and not terribly good with the glove, either.
And we have so little depth at SS that the Reds might not want to lose him. Cozart, Janish, Didi – that’s it, if we trade Negron.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Valaika can play a little short too, can't he?
Fuck lion say what! i got a fuck lion now come fuck wit me

it's too bad Negron isn't a better player
They’ve been using him just about everywhere. He was the starting SS once Cozart was called up, and he also played CF.
He could be the supersub Freel-type we need. If he hit better than .216 and didn’t have an unfortunate tendency to throw the ball away.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
it is too bad everyone the Reds have isn't better.

he was drafted as a SS
And the Reds gave him a couple of starts there once they were out of it. But he’s been a second baseman for the past couple of years.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I hope it is Travis Webb.
I see him as just organizational filler.
