This is not an awesome deal as it stands.

Frankly it sucks. In the long term it blows.

Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.

by Madville on Dec 17, 2011 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

But wait!

When our 1-2 punch at the front of the rotation takes us deep into the playoffs, and our lineup is stacked with young, good-to-great hitters, Joey is going to weigh the pressure of a big city (which he hates) against a town he likes that isn’t all that far from Canada. He’s going to add in the probability of a championship, and sign long term to a deal the Reds can (accounting for all that extra revenue from a winning team) afford.

It’s all good, man.

Very true.

I’d rather have an ace like Latos for 4 years. We keep him for 3 years, go for a series, and if not, trade him to a desperate playoff team who’ll give up the 2014 equivalent of Yonder, Yasmani, and Wagon

So this means that Heisey's getting a legit shot at LF, it would seem.

Which complementary bat is out there that would make sense?

I’m guessing that END will continue to be the lefty off the bench, and since Heisey actually hits RHP much better than LHP, it would make me think they’ll be after a RH bench bat who can play LF. Also, since we still need a closer, it’s likely they’ll be seriously bargain shopping so as to not use all the payroll space remaining (a backup SS is needed, too.)

Latos was an 11th-rounder because

of signability concerns. He was part of the old draft and follow process. Jordan Walden was in the same situation that year. Latos’ talent was considered first round by some.

The team that a player is on represents one team the player could play for...

As it happens, Alonso and Grandal couldn’t play for the Reds because of redundancy. There were still lots of teams that could use them and had a top shelf pitcher to offer – the Mariners, Padres, Cubs, Rays, A’s… That’s more than enough teams to maximize Alonso and Grandal’s value. If there were only one or two teams that matched up with the Reds, then the Reds not being able to play them would move the needle. But the difference between having five teams interested in them and having six is nothing.

they are these newer Coke Machines (insert blow joke here) where you have your main Coke brand / flavor / offering (Sprite, Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Mr. Pibb, etc) and then today I pushed Diet Mr. Pibb and my options were regular, Cherry or Cherry Vanilla.

Most of the others this way. I’m usually a Coke Zero kinda guy, or Sprite Zero kinda guy. Each of those has about at least 6 flavors each.

I’ve seen a lot of them popping up recently, and supposedly they are $30-35K per machine. They would be a perfect mancave addition.

Well, there is one reason.

Baseball history.

Halladay’s 10 most comparable pitchers through age 34 averaged 580 innings and a 3.81ERA through the rest of their careers, and only 2 of them pitched over 900 innings past their age 34 season.

You could certainly make a great argument for Halladay given his past performance. But, given the history of pitchers, I’ll take the guy who’s 10 years younger.

"Bitch slap your goldfish folks, we're all screwed."
-KevinMitchellisBatman

by BLee2525 on Dec 17, 2011 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Hubbell and Bunning played in an era with more primitive medical technology and players faded faster.

Gooden accumulated all of his value during his youth whereas Halladay is better now than he’s ever been. Ditto Saberhagen. Tim Hudson is still playing and has only logged one (good) season past age 34. Roy Halladay is demonstrably better than Pettitte, Candelaria, and Welch. Kevin Brown and Mike Mussina were good past age 34.

The problem with B-R’s similarity scores is it compares raw counting stats and it doesn’t take into account a aging curve. Though these players had similar totals, they accumulated them in much different ways.

I’d be much more interested in how pitchers similar in value to Halladay during their 31-34 seasons aged.

"Good luck, National League managers – I have no idea how you’re supposed to get this guy out." - Dave Cameron on Joey Votto

by Grahamophone on Dec 17, 2011 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

I only used the retired players in determining averages...

So Hudson isn’t in there.

Welch had an 81 ERA+ in 359IP in his career after age 34. Mussina pitched a while, 894IP, but only posted a 4.14 ERA (107ERA+) after age 34, and it was worse (4.36 ERA, 102ERA+) in his age 35-38 seasons. His swan song in ’08 makes it look better. Of your 3 examples of guys who were good past age 34, only Brown really pitched well (359 IP, 127ERA+).

You have to look at Halladay as having a better-than-average chance of maintaining his performance late into his career, as you noted, because of the career arc we’ve seen so far. And, if you’d take Halladay over Latos for the next 4 years, I couldn’t argue. But, the performance of pitchers, even good ones, past age 34 is spotty, at best. I think there’s a good argument to be made for the 24-year-old if I’m presented with that choice.

"Bitch slap your goldfish folks, we're all screwed."

Browns numbers

Screwed that up. He was 825IP (not 359) at 127 ERA+. I was looking at Welch’s IP numbers when I was typing Brown’s line. The point stands, however.

expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat

by kcgard2 on Dec 17, 2011 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

I already addressed Weaver

Latos has a better K-rate by a full strikeout per 9IP, a better HR rate, a BB-rate within 0.4 per 9, and he’s 5 years younger. I’ll take Latos.

My initial thought was I’d take Price, too, but in looking closer, I wouldn’t. Same career ERA, Latos’s career WHIP is 0.04 better, and Latos has a better career K/9, BB/9, and HR/9 than Price.

Latos and Hamels are almost identical. 3.39 vs. 3.37 ERA, 8.5K/9 to 8.7, 2.8 career BB/9 to 2.1 (Hamels’s biggest advantage), 0.8 career HR/9 to 1.1 (Latos’s biggest advantage). When it’s that close, give me the guy 4 years younger.

Latos has a better career K-rate, HR-rate and identical BB-rate to Lester, and he’s 4 years younger.

The only thing those guys have over Latos are better teammates. I think a lot of people (not just on this board, but throughout baseball) are underrating just how fucking good Latos has been so far in his career.

Pitchers typically peak about a year or two earlier than hitters, generally in the 25-27 range as opposed to 27-29 for bats.

NL CY Young Winners over the last 6 seasons have been 23, 34, 25, 24, 26, and 27. AL CY winners were 28, 24, 25, 29, 26, and 27, so it matches up pretty well anecdotally.

If the Reds trade Votto and they win the fans will still show up in numbers. Fans are more likely to show up and watch the Reds win without Votto than watch them lose with Votto.

That's why I hate the "Trade Votto" talk.

It postpones the chance of winning something. If we trade Votto, Alonso may be a star in two years, or he may not. Why not try to win with the stars that we have. The days of the BRM-type dynasty are over (unless you have billions of dollars to spend ala the Steinbrenners). But, if you’ve got a shot to bring a World Series title to your city (with one of the best players in team history) and you have to give up a couple young prospects to do it, then you’ve got to, IMO.

Are you hypotheticalizing?

You’d have Walt trade Joey Votto?

With attendance and winning percentage dropping since the little division championship two years ago?

In the offseason with Pujols and Fielder available as free agents?

How about you agree to waive the fine and I promise not to email you the remaining eighty six photos of my dog dressed as a bear.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Dec 17, 2011 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, if the team wins, people will come. It doesn't matter if it's Joey Votto or Yonder Alonso at first base.

Votto is more valuable as a trade chip than either one given his contract. Plus, he’s a better player straight up than Fielder.

I'm not saying he's not better than Pujols.

I’m saying if you’re gonna be foolish enough to trade Joey Votto while trying to convince your team’s fans that you’l be better because of it, don’t try to do it when the market is not in your favor.

Or.. just don’t do it.

How about you agree to waive the fine and I promise not to email you the remaining eighty six photos of my dog dressed as a bear.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Dec 17, 2011 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

The market is in our favor though

Votto is due $26.5MM over the next two years, or basically one year of Pujols. A team with prospects to spare or a win-now mentality would have provided a healthy package of players, and avoided a long term commitment to Pujols/Fielder. Not to mention that you are basically winning negotiation rights to Votto. The Blue Jays would seem to be a perfect fit for this scenario.

From what I can tell, both teams made out very well. Good signs of a good trade.

Careful projecting Cueto...

he had a 249 babip and a 6% HR/FB rate. Too many bought 2010 Arroyo (including Jocketty) and he regressed in a big way. Cueto is a decent middle of the rotation guy who enjoyed once in a career luck in 2011.

THIS IS FREAKING TREMENDOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot explain how excited I am. My father-in-law called me to give me the news of this trade, and he started with who the Reds gave up. When he got done, I said “The return better be tremendous.” He said, “It’s one player.” I got a queasy feeling in my stomach worried that it was Jurrjens or Shields (both of whom I like, but not for that haul). He said, “That kid from the Padres. Mat Larson or something.”

My immediate reaction, like several other people on this board, was “MAT FUCKING LATOS!!!!!!!!!” This kid is awesome. I cannot stress that enough. The number of pitchers I’d prefer over the next 4 years to Latos reads as follows: Clayton Kershaw, Felix Hernandez, Justin Verlander. That’s about it. I feel that good about this kid.

Reading the prognosticators is really frustrating.

They seem to not understand the principle of comparative advantage. As long as Mesoraco is the elite catcher on the Reds, Grandal provides essentially zero benefit to the team. The same goes for Alonso as long as he can only play 1B. If the Reds filled their major hole and gave up spare parts, however shiny, then they made a very intelligent trade.

Apparently Walt doesn't want anyone to think so.

He played this Latos trade pretty close to the vest, and for good reason. Turns out, Walt can’t just drop hints here on RR and not expect other people to know what he’s up to.

Fangraphs Article on the Trade

“Reds Finally Get Their Ace in Latos”

The big takeaway from the article is this:
Here are all the pitchers in baseball with 350+ innings and a strikeout rate between 23 and 25% over the last 2 years (Latos has almost 380IP, and is right in the middle of the selected strikeout rate at 24.2%, so this is not one of those “find a group of stats where this guy just crosses the threshhold in all of them and look how good he is” games):

Cliff Lee
Felix Hernandez
Zack Greinke
Cole Hamels
Justin Verlander
Yovanni Gallardo
Jon Lester
Mat Latos
Jered Weaver
Ubaldo Jimenez

Latos is 2 years younger than anybody else on the list. This kid is awesome. I cannot stress that enough.

Yeah, I'd love it if they find a way to lock up Joey.

But I really doubt they have the money to. If they do, Joey, Jay, Devin, Cueto, Latos, Chapman, LeCure, and Leake can carry us into the future and the Reds will be good for a while.

The Reds have had conversations with Jason Kubel, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer (via Twitter). GM Walt Jocketty told Fay (Twitter link) that the club does not have the type of money to sign someone to a Josh Willingham-type deal.
Even after trading for Mat Latos, Reds GM Walt Jocketty still plans on using Aroldis Chapman as a starter, tweets John Fay of the Cincinnatti Enquirer. Jocketty did leave room for a change of heart, however, noting that things could change later on.
