it's good to get rid of him before he gets caught with PEDs
He went to Miami and worked out with A-rod. Same story with Braun.

This is not an awesome deal as it stands.
Frankly it sucks. In the long term it blows.
Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.
Our long term is going to blow anyway once we lose Votto.
Might as well go for it now over the next two years.
But wait!
When our 1-2 punch at the front of the rotation takes us deep into the playoffs, and our lineup is stacked with young, good-to-great hitters, Joey is going to weigh the pressure of a big city (which he hates) against a town he likes that isn’t all that far from Canada. He’s going to add in the probability of a championship, and sign long term to a deal the Reds can (accounting for all that extra revenue from a winning team) afford.
It’s all good, man.

Very true.
I’d rather have an ace like Latos for 4 years. We keep him for 3 years, go for a series, and if not, trade him to a desperate playoff team who’ll give up the 2014 equivalent of Yonder, Yasmani, and Wagon
The Reds control Votto for two more years

I really like their new identity since they got over the Tony Gwynn years.

The patch of it on the sleeve nicely balances out the staidness of the rest of the jersey, imo.

So this means that Heisey's getting a legit shot at LF, it would seem.
Which complementary bat is out there that would make sense?
I’m guessing that END will continue to be the lefty off the bench, and since Heisey actually hits RHP much better than LHP, it would make me think they’ll be after a RH bench bat who can play LF. Also, since we still need a closer, it’s likely they’ll be seriously bargain shopping so as to not use all the payroll space remaining (a backup SS is needed, too.)

by Brendanukkah on Dec 17, 2011 2:28 PM EST up reply actions
that's totally understandable, and a part of me is in that camp, too.
I guess what’s got me so dang excited is that Walt is at least moving in the right direction, and he’s doing things that a lot of people around these parts have been begging for for years.
It’s not like there were a lot of bona fide aces out there to be had, either, and the ones that were available (Shields, for instance) had many of the same question marks as Latos, but were also a lot older and a lot more expensive.
It might blow up in our faces, but especially in the wake of the destructive inactivity of last offseason this move just seems to be a real breath of fresh air.
I would keep going with this post, but I can’t think of any more colloquialisms or euphemisms to use, so I’m going to have to throw in the towel and ride off in the sunset.

Not sure I agree with this...
the mlb leader boards are mostly first and second round talents.
Latos was considered a first round talent iirc…

Signability also affects MLB draft prospects more than any other sport as well, you know that too
And if Latos was considered a first round talent, why point out that he was an 11th round pick?

three really good prospects and an upside reclamation project is more than the Royals got for Greinke or the Rays got for Garza.
But then Latos is more valuable than Garza or Greinke.

You have to factor in that Alonso and Grandal were blocked, that's the kicker

Of course it is, do you think the other 29 teams don't know that Joey Votto and Devin Mesoraco are Cincinnati Reds?
Also, it’s easier to give somebody five bucks when you know you have a five in your other pocket.

The team that a player is on represents one team the player could play for...
As it happens, Alonso and Grandal couldn’t play for the Reds because of redundancy. There were still lots of teams that could use them and had a top shelf pitcher to offer – the Mariners, Padres, Cubs, Rays, A’s… That’s more than enough teams to maximize Alonso and Grandal’s value. If there were only one or two teams that matched up with the Reds, then the Reds not being able to play them would move the needle. But the difference between having five teams interested in them and having six is nothing.

they are these newer Coke Machines (insert blow joke here) where you have your main Coke brand / flavor / offering (Sprite, Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Mr. Pibb, etc) and then today I pushed Diet Mr. Pibb and my options were regular, Cherry or Cherry Vanilla.
Most of the others this way. I’m usually a Coke Zero kinda guy, or Sprite Zero kinda guy. Each of those has about at least 6 flavors each.
I’ve seen a lot of them popping up recently, and supposedly they are $30-35K per machine. They would be a perfect mancave addition.

I was just asking who the three others he thought were
Believe me, I’d take Latos over everyone I just mentioned
I disagree
Latos has more pure pitching ability than any of the other guys discussed this offseason, and I don’t think it’s particularly close.
I’m not kidding when I say that the only pitchers in baseball I’d prefer over the next 4 years are Felix, Kershaw and Verlander.

there might be

although Pete Harnish was kinda acy, he just wasn't flash

Contributing little more than than snark and wittiness to SBN since 2007.
Hallady will be 38 4 years from now.
I see the argument, but I’d go with Latos.
Latos has a better career K-rate (by almost a full strikeout per 9), better career HR rate, and a BB rate within 0.4 BB/9 compared to Weaver, plus he’s 5 years younger. Latos can still get better. Weaver is what he is. I’d take Latos over Weaver, no doubt in my mind.
"Bitch slap your goldfish folks, we're all screwed."

I have nothing to base this on
but Halladay feels like one of those guys, like Randy Johnson or Greg Maddux, who will still be a beast when he is 38, and people will not even really think about his age.
Contributing little more than than snark and wittiness to SBN since 2007.
Barring catastrophic injury, there is no reason to think that Halladay will fall off a cliff.
"Good luck, National League managers – I have no idea how you’re supposed to get this guy out." - Dave Cameron on Joey Votto
by Grahamophone on Dec 17, 2011 4:05 PM EST up reply actions
Well, there is one reason.
Baseball history.
Halladay’s 10 most comparable pitchers through age 34 averaged 580 innings and a 3.81ERA through the rest of their careers, and only 2 of them pitched over 900 innings past their age 34 season.
You could certainly make a great argument for Halladay given his past performance. But, given the history of pitchers, I’ll take the guy who’s 10 years younger.
"Bitch slap your goldfish folks, we're all screwed."
-KevinMitchellisBatman
Hubbell and Bunning played in an era with more primitive medical technology and players faded faster.
Gooden accumulated all of his value during his youth whereas Halladay is better now than he’s ever been. Ditto Saberhagen. Tim Hudson is still playing and has only logged one (good) season past age 34. Roy Halladay is demonstrably better than Pettitte, Candelaria, and Welch. Kevin Brown and Mike Mussina were good past age 34.
The problem with B-R’s similarity scores is it compares raw counting stats and it doesn’t take into account a aging curve. Though these players had similar totals, they accumulated them in much different ways.
I’d be much more interested in how pitchers similar in value to Halladay during their 31-34 seasons aged.
"Good luck, National League managers – I have no idea how you’re supposed to get this guy out." - Dave Cameron on Joey Votto
by Grahamophone on Dec 17, 2011 4:21 PM EST up reply actions
I only used the retired players in determining averages...
So Hudson isn’t in there.
Welch had an 81 ERA+ in 359IP in his career after age 34. Mussina pitched a while, 894IP, but only posted a 4.14 ERA (107ERA+) after age 34, and it was worse (4.36 ERA, 102ERA+) in his age 35-38 seasons. His swan song in ’08 makes it look better. Of your 3 examples of guys who were good past age 34, only Brown really pitched well (359 IP, 127ERA+).
You have to look at Halladay as having a better-than-average chance of maintaining his performance late into his career, as you noted, because of the career arc we’ve seen so far. And, if you’d take Halladay over Latos for the next 4 years, I couldn’t argue. But, the performance of pitchers, even good ones, past age 34 is spotty, at best. I think there’s a good argument to be made for the 24-year-old if I’m presented with that choice.
"Bitch slap your goldfish folks, we're all screwed."
-KevinMitchellisBatman
Browns numbers
Screwed that up. He was 825IP (not 359) at 127 ERA+. I was looking at Welch’s IP numbers when I was typing Brown’s line. The point stands, however.
"Bitch slap your goldfish folks, we're all screwed."
-KevinMitchellisBatman
I just don't these pitchers are very comparable to Halladay at ages 31-34 though.
That’s what I’m interested in. I’ll try to look it up later. If similar pitchers to Halladay at ages 31-34 age poorly then I’ll buy it.

I would add Hamels, Weaver, Haren, Price, Lester
it’s a short list though
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
I already addressed Weaver
Latos has a better K-rate by a full strikeout per 9IP, a better HR rate, a BB-rate within 0.4 per 9, and he’s 5 years younger. I’ll take Latos.
My initial thought was I’d take Price, too, but in looking closer, I wouldn’t. Same career ERA, Latos’s career WHIP is 0.04 better, and Latos has a better career K/9, BB/9, and HR/9 than Price.
Latos and Hamels are almost identical. 3.39 vs. 3.37 ERA, 8.5K/9 to 8.7, 2.8 career BB/9 to 2.1 (Hamels’s biggest advantage), 0.8 career HR/9 to 1.1 (Latos’s biggest advantage). When it’s that close, give me the guy 4 years younger.
Latos has a better career K-rate, HR-rate and identical BB-rate to Lester, and he’s 4 years younger.
The only thing those guys have over Latos are better teammates. I think a lot of people (not just on this board, but throughout baseball) are underrating just how fucking good Latos has been so far in his career.
"Bitch slap your goldfish folks, we're all screwed."
-KevinMitchellisBatman
Maybe so
but those guys have all put up similar stats for longer periods of time facing tougher competition or tougher environments. Latos is definitely a top pitcher, I just wouldn’t call him a top-5 guy. History might prove you right.
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
Sure.
It’s also quite likely that most of those guys (if not all of them) have already put up the best seasons they ever will. Latos’s best is almost certainly in front of him.

Based on what I've read....
Pitchers typically peak about a year or two earlier than hitters, generally in the 25-27 range as opposed to 27-29 for bats.
NL CY Young Winners over the last 6 seasons have been 23, 34, 25, 24, 26, and 27. AL CY winners were 28, 24, 25, 29, 26, and 27, so it matches up pretty well anecdotally.

I get it
The Reds would still have 5-6 years of team control over Alonso, rather than just 2 of Votto.

But Votto's arguably the most popular player on the team.
Why would you destroy fans’ goodwill like that?
"Red Reporter - An elitist clique full of like-minded douchebags." - BK
Fans care more about winning than players
If the Reds trade Votto and they win the fans will still show up in numbers. Fans are more likely to show up and watch the Reds win without Votto than watch them lose with Votto.
Really the only time trading a player destroys goodwill is when it makes a bad team worse.
Contributing little more than than snark and wittiness to SBN since 2007.
It is far, far, far from a sure thing

That's why I hate the "Trade Votto" talk.
It postpones the chance of winning something. If we trade Votto, Alonso may be a star in two years, or he may not. Why not try to win with the stars that we have. The days of the BRM-type dynasty are over (unless you have billions of dollars to spend ala the Steinbrenners). But, if you’ve got a shot to bring a World Series title to your city (with one of the best players in team history) and you have to give up a couple young prospects to do it, then you’ve got to, IMO.

The market is in our favor though
Votto is due $26.5MM over the next two years, or basically one year of Pujols. A team with prospects to spare or a win-now mentality would have provided a healthy package of players, and avoided a long term commitment to Pujols/Fielder. Not to mention that you are basically winning negotiation rights to Votto. The Blue Jays would seem to be a perfect fit for this scenario.

That’s for sure. But Latos is very talented himself, and though he may not be Halladay or CC, he’s still very good, very young, and also very cheap dollar-wise. It’s a whole lot to give up, but it’s not too much.

the Reds got exactly what they were looking for, and gave up (basically) nobody who would have been a regular on the 2012 team.
Did it cost a ton? Yes. Will it pan out? Who knows. What is certain though is that Walt got exactly what he said he was looking for…maybe not an “established” ace, but a young, inexpensive guy who is on his way to being an ace.

The only one likely to contribute in the next two years was Alonso, and he’s a defensive liability. Not saying he’s worthless but you gotta give something up to get something
You have to give up something to get something.
I’d like the Reds to get an ace for nothing, but that doesn’t happen anymore. I’m willing to give up a lot of talent if he brings back someone who’s young, cheap, and way better than anyone in the current rotation.

Questionables:

3. Chapman
4. Wood (unlikely but possible)
There is nothing questionable about Leake, other than he could get hurt like anybody else

but Waino still has to come back from TJ. And behind Garcia is Lohse; I think we all know how that will play out in the end.
"The USA despite its flaws and corruption and overall messiness is still a great and powerful instrument of freedom and hope for the entire world." - Madville
You never know.
It might take Waino a while to get back to his old form. Carp is old and didn’t have that great of a season last year. Garcia regressed last year. Then again, our three aren’t guaranteed anything.
when everybody is around and we're swinging for long bombs away, how do we come around to know - man, this really is what it's for?
Yeah he did
237 innings, ERA of 3.45, FIP of 3.06, struck out 7.24 innings per 9, with a .312 BABIP. He pitched like an ace last year in every since of the word.
Contributing little more than than snark and wittiness to SBN since 2007.
Wainwright will be lucky to pull off a winning record in his return from TJ.
I’m not sure anyone has ever come back from TJ to win 10+ games with an ERA+ better than 100 or a WHIP under 1.350.

Tim Hudson, A.J. Burnett, Shaun Marcum, Anibal Sanchez, Tommy John himself (olf course)
plenty of guys come back successful, if you allow me to count the 30 starts after returning, rather than the strict season (since almost all TJ pitchers spend the first half of a season still recovering).
But looking at your response more closely, I assume you mean strictly for the Cardinals in 2012, I pretty much have to agree he will probably not be a huge factor.

He has as much chance of being a negative as a positive in the confines of 2012.

THIS IS FREAKING TREMENDOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot explain how excited I am. My father-in-law called me to give me the news of this trade, and he started with who the Reds gave up. When he got done, I said “The return better be tremendous.” He said, “It’s one player.” I got a queasy feeling in my stomach worried that it was Jurrjens or Shields (both of whom I like, but not for that haul). He said, “That kid from the Padres. Mat Larson or something.”
My immediate reaction, like several other people on this board, was “MAT FUCKING LATOS!!!!!!!!!” This kid is awesome. I cannot stress that enough. The number of pitchers I’d prefer over the next 4 years to Latos reads as follows: Clayton Kershaw, Felix Hernandez, Justin Verlander. That’s about it. I feel that good about this kid.

Reading the prognosticators is really frustrating.
They seem to not understand the principle of comparative advantage. As long as Mesoraco is the elite catcher on the Reds, Grandal provides essentially zero benefit to the team. The same goes for Alonso as long as he can only play 1B. If the Reds filled their major hole and gave up spare parts, however shiny, then they made a very intelligent trade.

Fangraphs Article on the Trade
“Reds Finally Get Their Ace in Latos”
The big takeaway from the article is this:
Here are all the pitchers in baseball with 350+ innings and a strikeout rate between 23 and 25% over the last 2 years (Latos has almost 380IP, and is right in the middle of the selected strikeout rate at 24.2%, so this is not one of those “find a group of stats where this guy just crosses the threshhold in all of them and look how good he is” games):
Cliff Lee
Felix Hernandez
Zack Greinke
Cole Hamels
Justin Verlander
Yovanni Gallardo
Jon Lester
Mat Latos
Jered Weaver
Ubaldo Jimenez
Latos is 2 years younger than anybody else on the list. This kid is awesome. I cannot stress that enough.

Yeah, I'd love it if they find a way to lock up Joey.
But I really doubt they have the money to. If they do, Joey, Jay, Devin, Cueto, Latos, Chapman, LeCure, and Leake can carry us into the future and the Reds will be good for a while.
Hey, I'm all for the Reds being good into the future.
