Reds add six to 40-man roster, boat's full up
In preparation for the Rule 5 draft, the Reds have added Kyle Lotzkar, Pedro Villareal, Didi Gregorious, Henry Rodriguez, Neftali Soto, and Donald "shut up!" Lutz to the 40-man roster. That puts the roster at a full 40, meaning...well, I'm not sure what it means. At the very least, it means they won't be adding anyone in the Rule 5 draft.

Carrying over from the other thread, I think there almost has to be a CBA change like ’creds suggests. Maybe the rules about what players are eligible have changed. Maybe teams no longer have to keep players on their active roster.
I only really understand two of these additions, maybe 3.
H-Rod and Soto are eligible under what might now be the previous rules. Soto makes perfect sense to be added, but H-Rod hasn’t played above AA.
Lotzkar is probably eligible, but he shouldn’t be at risk to be taken in the MLB stage since he hasn’t played above A ball and has been injured.
Lutz is eligible, but ditto (minus the injury history).
Gregorius was signed at 18 in ‘08 so he shouldn’t be eligible yet.
Villareal doesn’t seem like he would be eligible.

Yeah, it looks pretty strange
I would expect we’ll hear some kind of explanation indirectly once the details of the new CBA are released.

I guess I shouldn't say it has to be a CBA change
The Reds might just be overprotective. DiDi, PV and Lutz make no sense to me, but maybe they think they’re risers and want PV and Didi over Fisher and Negron.

Lotzkar will be the opening day starter!

I don't buy it
If they want to promote them, they can promote them. They don’t have to add them to the roster.
At least under the current rules. The old rules – before 2006 – was three years for those signed at 19 or older, and four years for those 18 and younger. The rule change kind of screwed over some minor leaguers who were eligible for rule 5, and then suddenly weren’t. It also greatly reduced the number of players taken via Rule 5. Maybe they’re going back to the old rules?
I think the Reds planned this all along, though. They cleared just enough roster spots to make room for the players they planned to add. Or Matt Maloney might still be a Red.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Technically, I think they "have to" add everyone except DiDi
Though most of the others wouldn’t seem to be at risk. I can’t figure out PV, Didi and Lutz at all though.
I think the Reds are also planning for Negron and/or Janish to be off the 40-man. They have four SS on there now. 5 if you count Valaika. And I think a veteran back-up signing is likely.
There might also be interest in one of the young guys or the Reds could envision packaging them, so they want to make absolutely certain they’re around. Probably grasping at straws. In any case, something has to give. At the very least, the Reds might want to sign a bullpen arm.

I thought about that
Maybe they want Didi to be the backup SS?
But it still doesn’t make sense to add him if they don’t have to. They can always do it later – in January, say, after Janish is traded for Matt Moore. or after spring training, if Didi impresses them enough that they think he’s ready.
The thing is, it’s irreversible (at least without exposing him to waivers). What if they need the roster spot for someone else? I just can’t see the sense in adding a player before you have to.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Scratch that on Villareal
He does seem eligible, but I dunno why they’d protect him.

The Reds can still outright players this month in advance of Rule 5
So Negron or Fisher could be cleared off. And Janish could be non-tendered. Unless rosters are expanded beyond 40 in the new CBA, the Reds will probably have no more than 3 spots open unless there’s a trade. And they’re not going to get rid of both Janish and Negron if they don’t have another SS signed.

I'm mystified
The AP article on the new CBA (to be announced next Monday or Tuesday) doesn’t mention anything about changes in the rule 5 draft.
But some other teams have added players that seem like odd choices under the current rules. For example, the Tigers added Avisail Garcia. Who was 17 when he signed in 2008, and is still in A-ball. FTH?

Is it possible that they would add a guy to the 40-man in an effort to increase his perceived value for a trade?

according to MLB Trade Rumors
the Pirates are signing Clint Barmes. Two years, $10.5 million.
I think that’s the first multi-year contract he’s ever gotten.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
also, per MLBTR
Looks like Type A relievers aren’t going to be real Type A’s anymore…teams that sign them won’t have to surrender picks, but the teams that lose them will receive compensatory picks.
I guess this means it’s more likely that Coco may be a Red no more. He’ll get a 2 year deal somewhere, which means he’ll decline arbitration, and now teams won’t have to surrender a first rounder to get him…soooo, I think this is the end of Coco as a Reddo.

are they really improving, though?
Barmes is 33, and like Bartlett, would likely be a utility guy except for one good year.
Though I guess there’s really not a lot out there in the SS department. Yankees blogs have been discussing a rumored Eduardo Nunez for Jair Jurrjens trade. The Braves really like Nunez, but that seems lopsided.
Even so, I don’t think the Yanks will trade him. With both Jeter and A-Rod aging and injury-prone, they need Nunez. Nunez was reportedly the sticking point in the Yanks’ attempt to trade for Cliff Lee. They might even see him as their SS of the future. (He’s their type: all bat and no glove.)
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
How did this Pirates discussion become about the Yankees?
And no, I don’t think Barmes makes them anything resembling good.

interesting glimpse of MLB finances
in this link about the A’s trying to move to San Jose. The Giants are trying to block the move.
The Giants, projecting a payroll of about $130 million next season, will need to draw at least 3.2 million to break even, one source said. The team, which drew nearly 3.4 million last season coming off its first World Series title, cannot afford much slippage.
Baseball teams, even in markets a lot bigger than Cincinnati, still seem to be very dependent on attendance. Teh Fay said the Reds get most of their revenue from tickets sales, not corporate sponsorships, media rights, or merchandise sales, and it looks like that might be true even for teams like the Giants.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
It could be a big picture thing
This is a complete hypothesis with little evidence to prove it to be fact or fiction but…
It could be possible that ticket sales play a key role in the money received from corporate sponsorships and media rights. If the ballpark is at 80-100% capacity everynight it stands to reason that corporate sponsors will feel that sponsoring the individual team will provide a good bang for their buck and more corporations will want in, and also if a high number of tickets are sold it would seem that when it comes time to renew a media contract the team can say well you should pay more because we our games are a very popular event and will draw a high number of viewers.
So it may not be the money teams take in from ticket sales but how ticket sales effect other things.
"Life is such a vapid world pool of nothing"-Eddie Pepitone
That actually makes sense.
Also, while it’s possible to buy merchandise anywhere, I’d imagine the bulk of those sales come from people at the ballpark too

This just in:
I, like the Reds front office, have no clue what they’re going to do.
We’ve got no money, we’ve talked to no one, the landscape/playing field/token-phrase-for-the-biz-in-which-we-operate is changing, everyone is overvaluing their players and their prospects, we’ve got more MLB level position players than roster spots, and we’ve got no pitching.
I blame Slyde and ’creds.
