Oh and Jose Reyes is about to become a Miami Marlin
"Wait, you think I'm being mean to the pretend orangutan?" -- battlekow
That decreases the possibility that Pujols will sign with them. Dang.
On the plus side, it prevents the Brewers from signing the one premier free agent they were rumored to be interested in.
you don't think the Marlins will go for broke?

I don't think they can afford both of them, no.
If they do, they’re going to end up having an oft-injured infielder, an aging Pujols, and 23 AAA scrubs three years from now.
Reyes / HanRam / Albert
with that pitching staff?
They’ll go back to their old ways of build up, win, blow up.
And they’ll still enjoy more postseason success than the Reds

who the heck is going to buy Pujols' or Reyes' contract when they're 34
and still on the books for 5 more years?

no, he won't
He’s the one who wants Reyes on the team. They’re best buds. He told the Marlins he’d be happy to move for his best friend.

good point
A-Rod and Jeter used to be best friends. Now they don’t have sleepovers any more.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Chad Ochocinco lobbied hard for TO to come to Cincinnati, offering to play the Y spot saying that he would "be the Robin to TO's Batman."
By the end of the 2010 season they were having petty fights on Twitter.
To be fair, Jeter didn't move for A-Rod, which Hanley has said he'll do
That’s at least a better start
Yeah, and egos have never clashed before in the history of professional athletes.
Ramirez already has a track record of being a PITA to manage and be around. I give him until June before he starts complaining about how his talents aren’t being appreciated by the Marlins.
it is going to take a bit to get use to the Miami Marlins

Francona was supposedly the first runner up
I suppose this means he’s more likely to join the Cubs now.

Dusty will go back to the Cubs
And we’ll get Francona. And Hanley. And David Price.

He's from Reynoldsburg
His high school team ran a baseball camp that I attended several times.
Cowboy up?
MLB Trade Rumors suggested that Grady Little might be hired as the Cards’ bench coach. They think the inexperienced Matheny will need an experienced bench coach.
Don Zimmer is probably too old now for the grind of daily baseball, but he was a great bench coach. Torre could nap on the dugout bench when Zim was his bench coach (and the team was better for it). Once Zim left, Torre couldn’t nap any more.

I'm just glad they didn't hire Francona
I love Tito, and would have hated to have him manage a team I despised

Do you hate the Cubs?
Tito is shopping for a Bach pad in Lakeside

is he leaving his wife and four kids in Boston?

actually
his kids are probably grown up now, or close to it.
He just has to worry about the wife.

speaking of,
some dude with too much time on his hands found a way for Northwestern to have a killer lakefront football stadium.
Shades of U-Dub’s Husky Stadium, which I rowed by when I was in Seattle. All hail waterboard tailgating!

I don't think I saved up enough
For the BoSox?
Madson was supposedly offered 4/$44M by the Phillies but it fell through. The Mets and Dodgers need closers but they’re both in a weird place financially and competitively. The fact that the Phillies are out now and there’s a lot of closers on the market probably means Madson won’t be getting much more than 4/40.
Incidentally, there’s gonna be a post on closers tomorrow morning.

That's not incidental at all...
This is incidental:
If we sign a Type A free agent, do we lose a first round draft pick or a second round pick?
The Patriots
are just sad these days.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Huh.
I’m surprised because Jose Oquendo really looked like he had the inside track. He’s been the thirdbase coach there forever, and Metheny has no experience coaching at the big or minor league level. Like Robin Ventura, his recent job was serving as the GM’s special assistant, whatever that means. Interesting because Moz and TLR had been rumored as having a tense relationship, so a bold move away from the TLR ticket. Also interesting because Pujols was said to be tight with Oquendo. I don’t think it’d have any bearing on his Decision, but you never know.
Wait, so you are saying TLR had a tense relationship with someone?
I refuse to believe it!
It feels so nice to be back to normal

will this decision be as overwrought as the LeBron decision?
Or will it just be wrought?

Pujols is also
pretty tight with Matheny, apparently. This move is seen as helpful toward the resigning Pujols campaign.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
They are very tight; they were together with the Cardinals in 2000-2004
Concerning Pujols retainment, choosing Matheny was probably about as good as choosing Oquendo.
I still think the underrepresentation of minorities among managers is shady at best.
Although Oquendo is at least a third base coach, which is already exceptional.
by Cuetotally Amazing on Nov 13, 2011 11:27 PM EST up reply actions
Matheny being a huge fan favorite probably helped his cause.
But I’m sure it was a close call; one part of me is very happy with this decision and the other is really wishing Oquendo was the manager.
