World Series Game 6 Postponed (Open thread)
With the Rangers leading 3-2, Game 6 at Busch Stadium has been bumped to Thursday. Doppler gamesmanship?

Also over at Notgraphs is this menacing image (basically safe for work), that could be mistaken for anime fan art from a weirdo who really wants the Reds to acquire Colby Lewis and turn him into a science project. Makes me long for the Steroids Era. And Neo Tokyo.

Agreed.
I scheduled my one social weeknight of the week for last night on purpose!
I guess I’ll be watching old episodes of Homicide instead, then.
Still not a candidate.

I liked that in one episode, they were hanging out shooting pool at the Big Hunt
Mostly because they spent a good ten seconds lingering on the bar’s sign. Also, I’m not sure if I knew they had pool at the Big Hunt.

I hate this cancellation based on speculation bullshit
It’s the same as when the schools here call off classes for the following day because it’s supposed to snow. How about waiting until it’s actually raining enough to cancel the ballgame before doing so?

i disagree
if you look at the weather and see it will most likely be raining from 6PM until midnight why put the fans at the game through a number of rain delays and perhaps a cancellation. Actually cancelling it ahead of time is really the fan friendly thing to do, much better than having the fans at the game when the powers that be know there is an 80% chance that the game will be cancelled or have long rain delays but still sell concessions regardless.
Also rain delays can really fuck up a bullpen and this is a bad time for that.

I looked at the forecast for St. Louis
The highest chance of rain from 6pm to 11pm was 30%. I’ll take those chances.
"Wait, you think I'm being mean to the pretend orangutan?" -- battlekow
Then yeah they should have made an attempt
but i don’t think it is across the board bad to cancel the game hours before the gates are scheduled to open.

I wanted a game tonight.
Actually, I agree that the smart thing to do is bang it. Forecast is horrible, and it’s much better tomorrow and Friday.
But dang, I wanted a game tonight.

For my money
there are few better actors going today. He was in Blue Valentine, Lars and the Real Girl, Half Nelson…you may know him from The Notebook.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Oct 27, 2011 7:52 AM EDT up reply actions
Better than Leo?
And on that note, I’m sure I’ve said it before but Leonardo DiCaprio is the biggest “didn’t see that guy becoming a really good actor” case for me. Matt Damon too, but it’s a stretch to call him a good actor.
"Wait, you think I'm being mean to the pretend orangutan?" -- battlekow
You don't think Damon's a good actor?
I dunno, I’ve liked him in pretty much everything he’s been in.
I guess I don't see a whole lot of range from him
But I don’t watch a lot of movies either so I may be wrong.
"Wait, you think I'm being mean to the pretend orangutan?" -- battlekow
Give The Informant! a shot.
I’d say between that, Good Will Hunting, and the Bourne movies, he’s impressed me with his range.

I did not care for The Informant!

oooh, I forgot about that one
I’ve always wanted to see it and/or read the book, but have somehow managed to do neither.
"You said 'walks' twice."

i had to re-read scrabbles comment before going off on his foolish statement
i originally thought he said there were no better actors than gosling, but he actually said there were few better.
in that case, i’ll have to agree with him.
however, DiCaprio is one of those few.
DiCaprio gets the edge just because of longevity
But by the time he’s finished, I think Gosling is going to be counted amongst the greatest of all time.
It feels so nice to be back to normal
i think gosling's problem is that he looks so much like a ton of other actors his age
as of yet, he’s done nothing to make the average person know who he is or be able to differentiate him.
dicaprio has always been & always will be unique
DiCaprio hasn't aged at all like I thought he would.
I think Gosling’s career matches up eerily to Edward Norton’s so far. It’ll be interesting to see where he goes from here.

yes, and he looks like norton
edward norton is one of my least favorite actors of all time.
his range goes from “regular edward norton” to “boring edward norton”
He had a great late-'90s run
Rounders, American History X, and Fight Club. He was pretty much The Guy, and then something went wrong after Y2K.
You thought Edgar Renteria couldn't OPS .750 over 75 PA, so what the hell do you know?

Yes, but Gosling got his start on Young Hercules
Which is right up there with getting your start on Silver Spoons (or whatever it was for DiCaprio).

Remember when Affleck was the hotter commodity than Damon?
Because yeah, that was hilarious in hindsight.
I think Damon half-asses a lot of roles, but when he finds something he likes, he really goes at it full bore.
"You said 'walks' twice."
"I like walks."
I guess that's it too, it almost seems like he's not trying sometimes (and I HATE that description, especially applied to actors and pro athletes)
"Wait, you think I'm being mean to the pretend orangutan?" -- battlekow
I think its ok when applied to actors
there’s a lot of movies they’re contractually obliged to do that they really don’t care about. It’s not like athletes where they could literally get killed if they half-ass.
You ever hear that Michael Cain line? “No, I have not seen Jaws 4. But I have seen the house that I bought with the money from Jaws 4 and it is quite nice.”
"You said 'walks' twice."

I didn't know there was a Jaws 4
The Island is the weirdest Michael Caine movie I’ve ever seen. Some really creepy stuff.
Exactly what I thought.....there's a Jaws 4?
"Wait, you think I'm being mean to the pretend orangutan?" -- battlekow
Is that true, though?
I’m not sure that big-time actors are contractually obligated to do any movie. That would have been true during the studio years, but I’m sure that Matt Damon calls his own shots. There was actually a very good interview between Leo and Clint Eastwood in last month’s GQ, and Leo pointed out that he chooses to do very few movies because he’d rather have a good script than a good payday. They kept making fun of comic book movies.

You know what's fun?
Imagining that the plotline of The Notebook bookends the plot of Drive. There is, in fact, a strong argument that all of Gosling’s films can be read intertextually.
"You said 'walks' twice."
"I like walks."
Also, The Ides of March
He was really really good in that. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie in which every major player gave a knockout performance. Clooney, Gosling, Hoffman, Giamatti. All great.
Didn’t love Evan Rachel Wood, but what can you do?

That was a while ago though
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
thirteen came out when I was thirteen
which I think colors my view of that movie.
