Whatever Series Game 5: Cardinals @ Rangers (Open thread)
At most, we've got three games left in the 2011 baseball season. At least, we've got two. News of the Rangers demise was premature after that Game 3 drubbing. Someone is going to win. Might as well be YOU.

After spending some quality time with my favorite Cardinals fans this weekend
I find I can’t root against their happiness just out of spite. But neither can I bring myself to root for Carpenter. So here’s my wish: Carpenter gets shelled in the first, gets replaced, and the Cards come back to win. Make it so!

I can see how it would make someone more appealing, but can it make up for that level of creepiness?

Oh!
I didn’t know that other people do that, too.
I was talking to a friend once who claimed that being a singer made pretty much any woman hot. I agreed with the lesser point that it helps, but I think that’s taking it a bit far.

No.
I always thought it would be pretty cool, but I got jury duty at a really inconvenient time.
You didn’t get called for Hamilton County jury duty, did you? Because it’s the worst set-up I’ve heard of.
by the finest muffins on Oct 24, 2011 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Ha, no. Poor phrasing.
But from what I’ve heard, most places do one-day jury duty, where your commitment’s only longer if you get put on a trial that goes longer than a day. In Hamilton County, you’re in the jury duty pool for two weeks. You show up each day at the courthouse at the appointed time and then sit around until they call you to voir dire for a particular trial. If you don’t get called, you still come back the next day and the next and so on. If you get called for voir dire but don’t get on the jury (as happened to me) or if you get called for a jury on a case that doesn’t end up going to trial, you still keep coming back for days and days. I never got put on a trial, but still had to show up for jury duty for a week and a half.
I think there’s a certain number of days after which they just send home everyone who hasn’t been put on a trial yet, but still. It’s a lot of wasted time.

I've never seen a Harold and Kumar movie.
But when the first one came out, I’d never heard of either actor who played the title characters. Now I’ve seen them both in serious acting roles, and I find the newest trailers very odd.

Indeed, I didn't make this shit up.
On April 8, 2009, it was announced that Penn would join the Obama administration as an Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement. This necessitated that his character Lawrence Kutner be written out of the TV series House. Penn resigned his post as Barack Obama’s associate director of public engagement on June 1, 2010, for a brief return to his acting career. He filmed the third installment of the Harold and Kumar series, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, then returned to the White House Office of Public Engagement as an Associate Director. In July 2011, he again left the White House, this time for a role in How I Met Your Mother, but then went back to his political duties.

So what's this award that Ken Griffey won this week?
Is it a random thing or a regular thing?
by the finest muffins on Oct 24, 2011 9:21 PM EDT reply actions
via teh Fay
This will mark only the 12th time ever that Major League Baseball has bestowed the Award, which was created in 1998 to recognize achievements and contributions of historical significance. Griffey is the first recipient of the Award since 2007, when Rachel Robinson was honored for continuing the legacy of her late husband, Jackie Robinson, and for her service to Major League Baseball.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Apparently it's a real thing, but not awarded regularly.
The Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award is awarded by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to a group or individual who has made a “major impact on the sport” of baseball. It is not an annual award; rather, the Commissioner presents the trophy at his discretion. The trophy is a gold baseball sitting atop a cylindrical silver base, created by Tiffany & Co.

I think their undisputed masterpiece is “Hip to be Square”, a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it’s not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it’s also a personal statement about the band itself.

I fucking love the way LaAsshole
managed this game. He really helped them lose. I mean shit like starting the runner to avoid a double play with Albert Pujols at the plate and down by two with no outs in the 9th results in a strike ’em out, throw ’em out. Love, love, love!
Wear something sexy to my funeral.
is that what happened?
LaRussa seemed pissed off at Craig for going. That’s why the announcers thought Pujols had called the hit and run.
Did they ask about it after the game? I didn’t stay up that late.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
The plan was for the runner to be going, until he got caught
Then it was the runner’s or Pujols’ idea, in that order. Because TLR is infallible and to prove otherwise would cause existence to fold unto itself, swallowing everything we know and love.
