the first SIS of the year (thread hijack opportunity!)
First, I'd like to express wishes of a Happy New Year to everyone who reads or posts or lurks here at Red Reporter, renters and homeowners alike! All y'all who live at home with parents (unless you're currently enrolled in a school of higher learning) are not included in the wishes of happiness...get out on your own, dammit!
*Any chance GABP will install Yuengling taps once it becomes available in the Blue Chip/Queen City? That is 1st on my GABP wish list. Would Slyde consider whispering this request in Bob's ear? Anyone else have something they'd love to see at the old ball orchard?
*Entertainment question: What one movie are you looking forward to seeing in 2011? Put me down for the Hangover 2.
*You have one player you can add to this year's roster from Reds history. Who it be? Larkin, someone who is a premium defender at SS and a plus plus bat at the top of the order? Bench, someone who is often rated as the best C ever and a power RH bat? Morgan, a first ballot HOF who had sick OBPs in the early/mid 70s. Frank Robinson, 550 HR to drop into LF?
*Isnt it time for Jimmy Buffett to play GABP? He can easily sell out more than one show at Riverbend but is hell bent on only performing one show, and a non-weekend show at that, every year. If Wrigley can host concerts why not GABP? And...if not Jimmy, who would you book for a profitable and sold out concert at the ballpark?
*Outside of Duke(prohibitive favorite to win it all), UK, UL, XU, UC and OSU...who are y'all rooting for in NCAA hoops? My team isn't going to make it two rounds deep in their conference tourney this season so i could use a backup team to follow/root for, besides the local teams.
*Last, have you personally read Wire to Wire yet? If not, what's stopping ya?!?

- I guess I’m really looking forward to seeing Captain America: The First Avenger. Though there’s still a few movies from 2010, like True Grit, that I’m looking forward to seeing this year.
- We need a LF (despite my love for Gomes). I’ll say Kevin Mitchell. His OPS in his time with the Reds was insane, nearly as much as he was.
- Hmm, who would I like to see that would sell out a stadium? The last “big venue” act I saw was the Flaming Lips at a place roughly the size of Riverbend. I think they would be amazing. They’d love the hi-def screen, and they could shoot confetti out of the smokestacks. I don’t know if it would sell out, but it would be an incredible show.
- I don’t really care about college basketball, but I always like to see Ohio State do well, so that’s who I’ll be rooting for. And it would tickle me to see you adopt the Buckeyes as your secondary team.
- I did! I own a signed copy and just everything. I like the happy ending.
im 100% certain the Flaming Lips wouldn't sell out GABP
have Girl Talk open and they might, however.

It will come as no surprise
That I would hullaballoo in my trousers to see a Girl Talk/Flaming Lips show. That’s gotta be the happiest lineup possible.

The Flaming Lips came to Columbia last year
I wanted to go, but I had something going on.
(Cool story, bro)

If things get really serious with LB
You can do like the guy next to me at the concert did and propose (to his girlfriend) while confetti and balloons fall all around, everyone is happy, and the Flaming Lips are singing “Do you realize you have the most beautiful face?” I’m not sure it gets better than that.
a buddy of mine at work suggested I start a Girl Talk station on Pandora
it was one of the best suggestions of 2010
also included in 2010, was getting a double cheeseburger @ Opening Day with grilled onions!

Oh man, give me Frank Robinson or Eric Davis for LF
either one will be fine, thanks.
UK is my alma mater and my team in college bball. Kanter ruled ineligible, but still a team that is dynamic enough to go deep in the tournament, and which has surprised me with how well they’ve played so far. They play great team ball and are lots of fun to watch – more fun than last year’s team with 5 NBAers on it.
Haven’t read Wire to Wire. The 1990 Reds just aren’t that interesting. Sorry Slyde.
See, you think the 1990 Reds aren't interesting because you haven't read the book
They are a helluva lot more interesting that I thought they would be before I started researching the book. Go rent it from your library. I don’t even care if you pay for it at this point.

I think we need an Ace
I’ll take Bucky Walters, c. 1939. 319 IP, 27-11, 2.29 ERA. He hit .325 to boot.
Hard to answer the concert question. If they don’t sell out it won’t turn a profit, but if they do I’ll have to pretend not to enjoy it. Foo Fighters, maybe?
Wazzzzzzup
- I’m kind of tempted to go see Cowboys vs. Aliens because it looks so outlandishly ridiculous. I’d also like to see Hangover 2. Just saw True Grit the other day, and while I haven’t seen the John Wayne version, I enjoyed it.
- I’ll take Frank Robinson to play LF for us. Him or get Pete Rose to lead off or something.
- I probably wouldn’t get to come see anything at GABP anyway…
- Obviously, I’m rooting for Mizzou. They have a promising young team.
- I’ve read bits and pieces. Still need to sit down and finish the whole thing.

what if
You’re living with your parents because they’re old and can’t live alone any more?
(Not that I’m doing that, but I might one day!)
I don’t watch movies or TV that much, but I’m thinking I might tune in to The Onion’s new show, Sportsdome. It’s a parody of SportsCenter.
The lowly status of pro soccer in America is reflected in a brief segment where the anchors “catch up on everything that’s happened since we last checked in on the league — four years ago.”

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Hmm
- I’d enjoy some Yeungling at the ballpark, but if I can buy it cheap outside the park, I don’t know what motivation I would have to pay the premium that they would definitely put on it.
- Honestly don’t know what movie I’d like to see. My wife and I planned to see a movie last night after we used the Outback Steakhouse gift card we got as a gift, but it took us over an hour to get a seat (WTF?). So, we scrapped the movie, which is fine because we had no idea what we were going to see anyway. I’m looking forward to seeing both Inception and The Dark Knight (again) on my newly revamped BluRay home theater.
- Given the needs, I’d probably take either Frank Robinson or Barry Larkin on the current team. If I had to choose, I’d go with Larkin because of his versatility. He could bat lead off or second for us. The Reds are less in need of a big bopper in the middle of the lineup, though I wouldn’t thumb my nose at one.
- I’d book MC Hammer. Or Tone Loc.
- I haven’t been able to get into college basketball this season. I’m really looking forward to the return of baseball already.
- I have not read Wire-to-Wire. I keep meaning to, because I’ve never read it in continuous fashion, but it feels weird to me. I am reading The War for Late Night right now. Immensely interesting to see how NBC really fucked up a good thing.
Follow on Twitter: @redreporter. Buy The Wire-to-Wire Reds today!

- I don’t get the Yuengling hype. Its alright I guess, but there are literally hundreds of microbrew lagers available that are equal to or better than Yuengling. But, yeah, if it was on tap at GABP I’d drink it.
- “The Tree of Life” is probably the movie I’m looking forward to seeing most. Terrence Malick’s 5th movie since 1973.
- Larkin would be the best fit for this team in my opinion. As Bill James says, Larkin is one of the 10 most complete players in baseball history.
- Concert at GABP – Resurrect James Brown and Catfish Collins to reunite the original J.B.’s. Although the Flaming Lips would be a bit easier to pull off. They put on a show that you must see at least once in your life.
- Enjoying the fact that UC is back in the top 25, but that will probably change soon now that Big East play is in full effect.
- Haven’t read Wire to Wire yet. Read too many baseball books this summer and need to read some novels.
Watch it, ass blood.
I don't get yuengling either,
but my sister’s friend in maine who is a reds fan from PA demanded to be paid for dogsitting with a case of it, so the love does seem to be pretty universal.

I’m looking forward to the 3rd Transformers movie, and I’m told I need to see True Grit yesterday. I honestly don’t know what else is worth seeing in 2011, but I’m sure someone on here will let me know!
This team needs a certain C by the name of Lombardi. Sure, Bench was a Hell of a C, but part of me wonders aloud if Lombardi was actually better offensively?
I have no idea who I’d go to see in GABP. The commute is a bitch for me. Maybe some sort of festival type show.
I’m rooting for Syracuse to win the Men’s Hoops Tourney this year.
True Grit was pretty good.
I’ve never seen the original, but Jeff Bridges is a beast.

This one didn't seem -to me- to have any must-see cinematography so it can wait.
But I’m sure that it’ll get nominated for every Oscar including cinematography. The guy who did ‘Grit’ is the Coen’s go-to-guy and of course he’s good but it seems to me that he did much more with ‘No Country’ and even last year’s ‘Simple Man’ (or whatever it’s called).
It’s possible that the number of quality animated movies (and ‘Clone Wars’ episodes) that I’ve seen in the past two years has altered my judgement of what is truly well-crafted cinematographic art and what is just really cool.

-So what’s the over/under on the price if they did install Yuengling? $8.50?
-I’ll second Tree of Life. I saw the trailer last night before Black Swan (which by the way has the best dream sequence lesbian scene since Mulholland Drive). I’m still catching up on 2010 award season flicks.
-95-96 Larkin would fit in nicely.
-Jimmy Buffett? Ugh… I’ve never felt baseball stadiums are a good venue for concerts. The only decent one I ever saw was at Shea Stadium in 65.
-This was supposed to be the dream season when Northwestern finally makes the tournament. They’ve had a really bad start to conference play though…
-I haven’t been able to finish The Book Thief because things are getting depressing so I keep putting it down. I’ll go ahead and order Wire to Wire from Amazon and add it to my queue.
