RR Community Prospect Rankings: Aroldis Chapman needs to get a bigger trophy room

For the second year in a row, Aroldis Chapman is RR's choice for the #1 prospect in the Reds' system.  Personally, I don't see how it could have been anyone else, unless one of the other candidates on the list has a triple-digit fastball that they've hidden until now.  I'm sure he's honored that he's the first multiple winner of our esteemed honor, and keep in mind that the RR CPR award is the first major award that Aroldis Chapman has won twice.  I'm sure that'll be a trivia answer at Redsfest 2055.

I'm thinking the vote for the second prospect will be a lot closer.  Your list is the same as yesterday's, get at it!

What's really suprising is the Posada is 2nd on that list

He hit .288/.381/.497 over that time frame. And this is after catching 1500 + games. Crazy

He’s at 51.9 fWAR right now (46 bWAR) and he should play for at least another year.

Mesoraco

Gotta be the best overall catching prospect in the nation (key word: overall). He had a three level lead last year, showed amazing power, good plate discipline, and showed really good defensive skills.

Plus I always like his draft scouting report and held out hope even when he struggled.

by BigBabyBruce on Jan 4, 2011 10:05 AM EST reply actions

Even if you say "overall", I have a hard time putting him ahead of Montero still

Montero has 2 years to get his catching skills to Mesoraco’s level, which are improved but still have question marks, and Mesoraco’s bat last season was only slightly better than what Montero has put up as career numbers. I’d trade Mesoraco for Montero straight up today and not even think twice about it.

Agreed.

I also think Wil Meyers is a bit better still as well. Plus, Conger and Arenciba are still prospects, so they could be up there.

Devin is in the conversation, but he’s certainly not the best.

see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka

by nycredsfan on Jan 4, 2011 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

Montero better?

Is by far a better offensive force. But he is not a catcher. His defensive skills are greatly lacking, and he will not be a catcher for the Yankees. If he is traded he has a chance to catch for another team, but will still probably stay at the position. He is a future 1B/DH.

Meyers is really good, but his highest level is A+. He does have age on his side and I would say a higher ceiling than Mesoraco. I think Conger is under Mesoraco, while Arenciba is above him, but not by much.

My main reasoning is that Mesoraco is a better defender than all of them, while hit hitting tools aren’t as high. That is why I termed him the best overall catcher, not the best overall prospect.

Despite Hamilton winning the Celebrity wiffle ball home run derby at Redsfest

I have to go with Mesoraco. I’m not sure if last season was real, but even his career line (.261/.334/.444) with developing power (as you would expect from a 22-year old) would look good at catcher. He gets the advantage over Yonder who needs to bring some more power to play 1B in the big leagues.

Well, there is plenty of opinion out there that he will be able to hit 20-25 homers

and his bat and patience profile for a pretty good OBP. Even with his supposed struggles, he has a career .291/.368/.458 line in the minors.

I think “excited” is a strong word, but he should be able to OPS over .800 for a season, making him an average MLB first baseman. Guys like that don’t grow on trees.

It all depends on if you think his power will develop

His career hitting line in the minors is .291/.368/.458. That’s not too far off of Votto (.289/.386/.477), but Alonso needs to start showing some real power beyond the doubles. He slugged .470 last year, which is encouraging coming off the hamate injury.

The things that I really like about him are that he’s a line drive machine (I wish MinorLeagueSplits was still up so that I could demonstrate this), and in his minor league career he has walked 102 times while striking out just 143 times. Those two facts give me confidence that he’ll be a hitter in the big leagues, but the question is whether or not he’ll ever hit for real power (25+ HR).

Couple reasons

(1) Cool name, (2) First-rounder, (3) Can use the headline “Alonso Mourning” when he’s traded away.

I do think his inability to move quickly and play any position other than 1B cuts into his value. The other guys here can boast defense as an asset and may stick at premium positions. But no other prospect on the ballot is as likely to OPS 800+ in the majors, much less be capable of doing it next season.

Yonder

If he hits 20 to 25 home runs a year, that’s still one a week and even Gomes can do that.

Yonder needs/needed to learn how to play left field p.f.q.

I see him a less of a prospect than a chunk of trade bait.

by johnu1 on Jan 4, 2011 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

That's not really fair, though.

Gomes isn’t at all a threat to OPS over .800, because Gomes won’t get on base enough or hit enough doubles, even if he matches Yonder’s HR total.

by nycredsfan on Jan 4, 2011 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

I don't disagree generally

but the point for me is that Yonder’s overall value as an everyday player needs to be on his own back. He needs to be able to bat 4 times a game. If he can’t play left field, he can’t make this team. Regardless of his potential as a hitter, he is more valuable to the Reds as a trade chip, currently.

So I need to take Yonder’s game one step ahead of his offense, since he can’t DH for us more than 12 times a year.

That's all valid. The big issue with him and the Reds is where to play him,

but that doesn’t really matter when gauging his prospect value. He’s a 1B who should be able to hit like one. That is really all that matters as far as judging him as a prospect. You can’t downgrade a player’s value or potential simply because he’s blocked in his current organization.

Y-Rod is a bit of a challenge to rank

He drew comparisons to Miguel Cabrera when he was signed and has that five tool pedigree with a cathedral ceiling, but he never seems to be getting any older. He’s not walking very much, but there’s reason to expect his BB% will increase with with age and power. Cabrera didn’t walk a whole lot more than Rodriguez in the low minors and had a 7.2% BB rate his first year in the majors (compare to last year at 13.7%.)

Yorman was 17

I would not expect him to show a high walk rate. I’d expect him to hit the ball and continue to showcase the tools that he was signed for. His walk rate should increase as he matures. There are plenty of young players that do not showcase a high walk rate early on. I think we also need to remember he was a 17 year old kid playing with 20 year old players.

I put Yorman above Hamilton at #4 on my list just because of his higher ceiling, but it is really close between them.

"Me carrying a briefcase is like a hot dog wearing earrings." ~ Sparky Anderson

by BigBabyBruce on Jan 4, 2011 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think there's any disagreement here

My point is simply that Yorman’s potential is boundless, but it’s the uncertainty that makes him hard to rank. What if he’s a hacker and not just immature? He’s going into his age 18 season and we only have a nice season worth of 184 PAs to stake his reputation. He could very well be the best positional player in the org.

My sense is the Reds will bring him along a little slower than Cabrera. The Marlins had Cabrera and, more recently Stanton, skip over AAA. This could be strictly a function of the examples I can think of off-hand. If Yorman is 19 and mashing at AA, it doesn’t seem like a very Reds move not to send him to Louisville.

I agree with this assessment

and it is echoed in the pretty divergent opinions you’ll find on him. Sickels ranks him #10, but that’s because he heavily favors upper minors performance and high floor players. I’m very interested to see where BA puts him and what they say about him, since they tend to favor tools a bit more.

I also am interested to see how aggressive the org is with him. I really can’t figure them out with their player promotions. Some guys are stuck at one level forever, while others get promoted extremely agressively. I’d say that the general trend is a conservative approach, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the minors for at least 3-4 more seasons, assuming no injuries.

I mean, can he really be slower/worse than Dmitri in LF? Wait, don’t answer that.

I'm just saying the Christmas season lasts til Epiphany, on Jan. 6

There are twelve days of Christmas. They even wrote a snappy little song about it. So the Red Reporter is well within his rights to still be rocking the Christmas garb.

there are several ways of determining when Epiphany is

Many countries celebrate it on Jan. 6, no matter what.

In a lot of countries where there's a Spanish influence

what Americans celebrate as Christmas is celebrated on Epiphany. Christmas is religious. Epiphany is when the presents are given. (My Hispanic friends like to gloat about how much cheaper presents are after Christmas.)

Given the number of Hispanics in baseball, we probably should leave the decorations up until Epiphany. :-)

I took Meso

The fact that he’s a catcher weighed heavily in my decision of him over Hamilton. Hamilton is probably my next pick, I’m just not that excited about Alonso anymore… I know the guy can contribute and everything, but he’s kind of a headache right now. (Just figuring out where to play him)

Alonso was a terrible pick

im ok with two blue chip C’s…but I still wonder why the Reds brass took Alonso over Smoak (especially with Votto emerging).

Ok, so I'm somewhat enlightened about you now, given our exchange on the other thread

But come on. Name me one other team that had 4 starting position players, 4 starting pitchers, and 3-4 bullpen arms all come from their own drafting/international signing.

Now, how many of those made the playoffs?

I'm guessing the Rays

but, what about the teams that used their farm to stockpile MLB talent? The Yankees have done this, the Phillies have done this.

to the Reds credit, they’ve done well in Rounds after Round 1 (which is where it seems their real talent’s come from)

currency of the land

I’m picking a new way to value prospects, just to pick open that old scab.

The most valuable prospect is the one that would gain the most in a trade (contract issues aside).

On that, I picked Alonso. Right now, we could get more for him than for anyone else on the list.
