Or just a good young pitcher for team over the next 4 years
Seems like a pretty reasonable deal. I’m sure, like the rest of the contracts Walt has given out this offseason, that it’s extremely backloaded.

if Cueto is a trade chip, what's that make Volquez?
I hope the only correct answer is “guaranteed to be traded by Opening Day 2011”

I'm not sure exactly how the numbers break down and what the advanced stats/projections will have to say about this...
But my initial reaction is that an average of $6.5 million/year seems pretty expensive for him.
Depending on his progression, if this is really his breakout year like some are predicting it could save the team some money, but otherwise I feel the team could get a better deal in arbitration.
I’m waiting to see what nycredsfan or RijoWhatever says about it in their deal breakdowns (which will probably be in a few days, right?)

He was about league average in 2008 and 2009, and stepped beyond that last year, plus he is still young. If he stays healthy this is a great contract for the Reds.

Yeah, apart from the usual caveats about pitcher injury risk
There is little chance this bites the Reds in the ass. They are essentially paying for about 5.5 WAR at current rates. Cueto was worth exactly 5.5 WAR in his first three seasons. So again, barring injury, it’s hard to see him being worth less than that over the next 4.
Of course, they shouldn’t be paying FA WAR rates for the next 3 seasons, but I’ll let JinAZ do the advanced math (read: arithmetic) on that. I think it’s a solid deal.

If...
1. You believe fangraphs’ “1 WAR is worth $5M in every situation” meme, and
2. Either fangraphs or baseball-reference correctly estimate pitcher WAR, and
3. Arb contracts in years 1/2/3 are worth 40/60/80% of FA value…
This is a decent deal. Not a great deal by either side, but decent. At least the Reds got a FA season out of him.
Both fWAR and bWAR thought Cueto was worth a bit more than 2 WAR last year. If 1 WAR is really worth $5M/yr, this deal values him as just below a 2 WAR pitcher.
I’m on record as saying that I don’t trust the WAR values for pitchers, nor do I believe that the monetary value of a win is the same for every position. To me, though, this contract passes the “smell test”.
Although Jockety, through teh Fay, denies a deal’s been done.

the guy has had a couple of minor arm injuries, which he bounced back from
he hasn’t missed longer than a couple of weeks due to arm problems. He never really had arm issues as a minor league pitcher. His injuries have been pretty normal, especially for young pitcher. Harang, who was a horse from 2005 until 2008, missed 2 weeks of 2004 with a sore throwing arm.

Left my laptop at work so I don't have all of my toys.
…So I’m not going to do a big post. I’m writing this on the old desktop computer I just hooked up to my TV (I’m ready for MLB.TV this season!!).
But THT projects Cueto for 2.4 WAR next year (4.23 ERA, 178 IP). ZiPS has him at a 4.01 ERA over 190 IP. So they see some regression from last year—his peripherals would agree with that—but still show him as an effective middle rotation pitcher.
Actually, here’s THT Oliver’s projected WAR for each year of his new contract, along with approximate cash value, adjusted for arb over those first three years of the deal
2.4 WAR * $5M * .4 = $4.8 M
2.2 WAR * $5.4M * .6 = $7.1 M
2.2 WAR * $5.8M * .8 = $10.2 M
2.2 WAR * $6.3M * 1.0 = $13.9
Total: $36 M
So that would indicate that this was a pretty nice deal for the Reds—classic trade of potential earnings by the player for the security of never having to work another day once you finish your baseball career.
I don’t know how I feel about zero aging after the first year, however, and I think I remember hearing the Brian’s not completely happy with his aging curves for pitchers. If you instead assume 0.3 WAR per season aging, mostly due to risk of injury, it becomes:
2.4 WAR * $5M * .4 = $4.8 M
2.1 WAR * $5.4M * .6 = $ 6.8M
1.8 WAR * $5.8M * .8 = $8.4 M
1.5 WAR * $6.3M * 1.0 = $9.5
Total: $29.5
…which would make the deal about dead even value. ’Course, if you go with the ZiPS projection instead of the Oliver projection, Cueto looks valuable, so it again becomes a deal that favors the Reds.
I’m generally not crazy about locking up pitchers long term, as they always seem to get hurt. But this only takes Cueto through his age 28 season, and he’s never had major injury problems despite his size. So I like this. Seems like a good way to lock up a young talent. And what I really like about this is that the Reds have done it with two other players this offseason, and therefore are insuring each of them against each other. Yay!

Aging
Even account for injury risk, shouldn’t Cueto’s projections stay at least flat through the next several years? He’s only going to be 25 this season. I’m colored by his occasional brilliant game but I always feel with Cueto that he’s this close to a significant breakout. FWIW (prob not much) he’s got some interesting comps on bb-ref through his current age. Livan, Danks, Sheets, Len Barker.
so he's either going to be white or fat
yeah, I’m a bit skeptical of those comps.
"College actually kind of beat that out of me, making me more, well, of an asshole."

Just logically...
I think there’s a decent chance that he gets hurt and has zero value for some or all of those years. He’s a pitcher.
I think there’s a decent chance that he stays healthy and performs at his current standard.
I think there’s a lesser chance that he dramatically improves and becomes a 3-4 win pitcher every year.
Depending on how you weight each of these, I think you can argue anywhere from a flat aging curve to a curve that shows a small dropoff each year. If :
30% breakout, 30% injury, 40% steady — that’s a flat aging curve.
15% breakout, 30% injury, 55% steady – that’s a small dropoff per year (on average).
Is 30% injury risk too high? I dunno, I’d need to go pull Zimmerman’s study again from a month or so ago. You’d need to think he has better than a 30% chance of breakout, and/or less than 30% chance of injury to project better than flat aging.

This seems a little high, but probably a fair deal
If this didn’t happen, Cueto would get ~3.5M this year if they settled. The team should get some kind of discount since they’re committing four years, so you figure something like 3, 5, 7, and then 12 for the FA year. Actually that’s pretty decent. I like this.
It would be nice to get an option year on the end, too
but I’m generally just fine with this.
And I think this virtually guarantees that Volquez will be going year-to-year. They won’t want to tie up that much future payroll.

I recently ran some similarity scores for NL starting pitchers, based off of the three stats that I felt defined each pitchers “talent type” the most. They were K/9, BB/9, GB/FB. For the Reds, using the rotation of Volquez, Arroyo, Cueto, Leake, Bailey… the five similar pitchers for them came out to be (based on Fangraphs projections)…
E.Volquez = B.Norris (K/9) 9.43 vs 8.95 (BB/9) 4.68 vs 4.33 (GB/FB) 1.34 vs 1.04
B.Arroyo = K.Lohse (K/9) 5.38 vs 5.50 (BB/9) 2.58 vs 2.71 (GB/FB) 1.01 vs 1.12
J.Cueto = A.Harang (K/9) 7.16 vs 7.38 (BB/9) 2.76 vs 2.69 (GB/FB) 1.02 vs 0.93
M.Leake = R.Wells (K/9) 6.50 vs 6.57 (BB/9) 2.90 vs 2.76 (GB/FB) 1.58 vs 1.43
H.Bailey = T.Gorzelanny (K/9) 7.54 vs 8.00 (BB/9) 3.93 vs 3.88 (GB/FB) 1.20 vs 1.06
Of course this only compares 2011 projected stats and does not take into consideration things like contract status, age, etc….
Full list here.
You're forgetting Travis Wood
Also, I fail to see the relevance in this.

I picked five for each team.
Which pitcher should I drop for Wood? The relevance? It is just information. Something perhaps interesting to a few of you about your pitching staff. Cueto and the others.
could you point me to one of those threads?
They are hard to find.

Well, considering a few of the projection systems project Wood to be the team's best starter in 2011
I’d say you should drop anyone for him.

I think Leake is the logical choice, given Bailey's lack of options
Bailey is the real wildcard. I have no idea what to expect from him. More injury troubles? Mediocre, 5th starter quality pitching? Continued improvement in confidence and return to the velocity he had a few seasons a go? A long-awaited breakout?

I replaced Leake with Wood
Wood’s closest talent comparable for these three metrics is Ian Kennedy (ARI). I think given a larger sample, Wood’s GB/FB would be closer to Kennedy’s.
Wood / Kennedy
K/9: 7.61 vs 7.97
BB/9: 3.14 vs 3.28
GB/FB: 0.63 vs 0.84
those projection systems are accurate
Wood is arguably our best starter

I'm ok with this deal
I’m not exploding in my pants over it, but I’m on board with locking Cueto up over Bailey and especially over Volquez.
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, is just a freight train coming your way...
@btcoop71
like it.
I guess I really just like how the Reds finally have multiple young, homegrown studs worth locking up for years to come.
I guess the reason I never really understood the arbitration process until a few years ago is pretty simple: if all your young talent sucks to the point that they’re either non-tendered or traded, you never find out about buyouts and extensions.
Now we know, and knowing is half the battle.

Question on the 40/60/80 idea:
After seeing the numbers exchanged on Cueto, speculation was circling a number in the $3.5 million range for a one-year deal to avoid arbitration. Does that mean Cueto’s FA value for 2011 is $8.75 million? Would he get that much on the open market?
he is a guy who is coming off a year where he put up an era under 4, and threw 185 innings
while that isn’t going to win a Cy Young, above average starting pitching is hard to find.

I'm not really arguing one way or the other on his value.
I just really wonder if the 40/60/80 is spot on…
Pitchers who got as much or more than Cueto’s FA value based on the above numbers: Lee, Lilly, de la Rosa. That’s it.
Some pitchers who got less than Cueto: Pavano, Westbrook, Correia, Vazquez, Garland, Harang, Penny
Is Carl Pavano really less valuable than Cueto? 3.75 ERA, 221 IP, 1.5 BB/9?
how much is Pavano going to make next year
and Cueto is also more likely to make 25+ starts than Pavano.

Pavano will make $8 million.
Not sure he’s “more likely” than Pavano to start 25+. If the Twins keep him out of New York, they should do fine.
Seriously though, Pavano’s started 33 and 32 games the last two years.
Regardless, I am not arguing for or against Pavano as much as questioning the way financial value is being determined. If Cueto won the arbitration hearing, he’d be “worth” even more than $8.75 million for 2011. It’s clear he’s worth more than the $4 million Harang got from SD (probably even $4.75 million more), but is he $4.75 million more valuable than Correia? Then again, Westbrook’s numbers for 2010 look like a good comp, and he’s also get $8 million next year.
Obviously a lot goes into these decisions (coming back from injury, competition for services, home team discount, dozens of other factors), which makes all this very difficult. And fun to look at.
I think what Pavano found is that one good year does not turn you into a heavily valued commodity
Also, his FIP was the same as Cueto’s. Every other pitcher on the paid less list has big question marks or is a worse pitchers except for Garland, and to be honest, I’m not completely sure why he didn’t get a bigger deal.
The 40/60/80 thing is an estimate though. That doesn’t mean that Cueto is guaranteed $8.75M on the open market, though given his age and success so far, I think he’d easily get 4yr/$36M, which is the approximate equivalent of his deal (the math is hard without knowing the breakout, especially of the final year of the deal).

Good point.
And this is definitely preferred to a 3 yr./$25 million contract ahead of the 2005 season…
Cueto is better than Garland too
he didn’t get a better deal because he is 32 and a product of Petco Park.
Garland is basically Bronson Arroyo
9 straight years of 190+ innings, double-digit wins, and a FIP in the mid-4s. That’s why I’m surprised he only got a year plus a vesting option.

or both
by Highlifeman21 on Jan 22, 2011 4:42 PM EST up reply actions
It's not Arroyo, dude
as much as we might want it to be. The way the contract is structured makes him pretty difficult to trade.
Well, if you think Jon Garland is a good comp for Arroyo
it seems that the Arroyo contract was something of an overpay. But the merits of that contract have been debated a lot already. Your reply was diplomatic, at least.
You are correct
I question if we even should have picked up his option based on the arms we have in our stable right now.
My strategy would have been to offer arbitration and try and hope for draft picks if he ends up with another team, or we end up with him for a year of arbitration. I think that was an option.
If it wasn’t, letting him walk and having $10+ MM to spend on needs like LF or SS would have gone a long way for 2011, no?
