Inspired by MLB Trade Trees, I decided to see what the longest running change of trades looks like in tree format. No this isn't exactly what MLB Trade Trees does, but I like this way too. Click here for larger version.
For those that don't remember, Dan Wilson was the 1st round pick in the 1990 Draft by the Reds. He went on to have a good career catching in Seattle. And 20 years later, that pick is still providing dividends for the Reds.

technically 3
Bret Boone too!
Of course, EdE and WMP probably cancel all of those out.

even longer
Yonder Alonso’s tree goes back to 1981, when Paul O’Neill was drafted.
Yonder Alonso was a draft pick
I think you mean Wladimir Balentien, but he signed in Japan this off-season, so technically that chain is broken.
I started looking at that one as the example though and it was more of a trunk than a tree. The only part of the chain where the Reds received multiple players was when they traded Deion Sanders, Dave McCarty, Ricky Pickett, John Roper and Scott Service for Dave Burba, Darren Lewis and Mark Portugal. Amazingly, every other deal in the chain was one-for-one except for Roberto Kelly and Roger Etheridge for Deion. It made for a much less interesting chain, visually.
BTW, I just downloaded your 2010 database yesterday. Thanks so much for doing that every year. I use it less now that BBRef has so many tools, but every once in a while I can’t find a way to get what I want. Thanks so much for helping me out of those “jams”.

Is there any way other than manually to find such chains?
I’m just chugging through bbref ALL TRANSACTIONS on interesting players…

not on BBRef
if you are comfortable with databases, Retrosheet used to have a file with all the transactions. Not sure if they’ve still got it or not.

I have discovered, after hours of looking, a GIANT Reds trade tree.
The 103-player tree starts with Hall-of-Famer Enos Slaughter’s signing in 1935 and ends with Reds 1987 reliever Guy Hoffman. I’m working on the graph now, but it’s massive.

And there was an error in it...crumb.
It’s only 24 players…not that 24 isn’t cool…but I wanna find bigger…

Rob Bell.
He was supposed to be the answer to something. Maybe “why you don’t trade for Atlanta’s pitching prospects.”
I thought that was Aaron Myette
or Matt Belisle.

This is super cool.
I would love to see more of these. I wonder what the longest chain in MLB history is.
Watch it, ass blood.
According to Pete Rose
That would be Joe DiMaggio’s.

Well, I guess the person who finds the longest Reds trade chain wins a personal farewell email from Willie Bloomquist.
Researchers go in 3…2…1…

As best as I can find
This tree has the most generations of any trade chain in known (i.e. retrosheet) Reds history.

I’m pretty sure he was my mom’s favorite baseball player when she was a kid.

I really love how these look like family trees.

lots of players, sure
but that is the most replacement level graph I’ve ever seen.
