This is good news Reds fans. Jim Kelch does a great job calling the game, and Keels is pretty good at football.

Good news

Keels was a yawn job.
Now if only the Brenneman’s would retire…

I agree with you on both counts.

Jim Kelch does a good job whenever I catch him on the radio.
Thom Brennaman has always been a hack riding on his father’s coat-tails.
Marty just hasn’t been the same since Nuxy passed away.

This is hard to even type this

But tHom actually has a pretty proven track record and have been around for a lot of different stuff in the world of baseball. Maybe it’s because I also am a hate monger and truly despise Cubs fans. I actually am glad he’s here in Cincinnati. Maybe tHom will carry on his father legacy for quite some time. You might as well get used to seeing him, It’s not like Rose’s son, It’s more like Griffey’s

Sorry but as Grahamophone so eloquently put it:

Thom Brennaman has always been a hack riding on his father’s coat-tails.

I’ve never heard Thom call a really great game (baseball or football). Madville already pointed out that he never shuts up, and it’s even worse when he’s with the Cowboy. He just eggs Brantley on.

Agree

Marty’s great to listen to when the team’s doing well. I like Kelch, but he’s not on Marty’s level as a PBP guy.

by ken on Jan 14, 2011 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Ditto

Marty & Cowboy were much much better last year. As much as Marty & Cowboy can be annoying sometimes if they are trying to carry the show during a bad game, it will be a sad day when Marty retires.

After subscribing to MLB.tv’s audio-feed and listening to some of the opponents’ radio guys, our staff is one of the best. I’m not sure if that says more about the Reds broadcast team or the state of sports broadcasting today.

I also think Marty and Brantley are a really good combination

Their chemistry is very strong. Now, when Marty takes his naps and leaves Brantley to run the show on his own, it is godawful. Right up there with Keels awful. Also, if the team is losing, they can get into a spiral of ass-headed pessimism, which I think Kelch is more resistant to. But when things are going well, I enjoy listening to Marty and Brantley call a game together.

Imagine

Marty announcing the BRM. There were just not too many reasons to criticize that team.
I didn’t even know Marty could criticize a team until they started sucking.

was listening to him announcing the osu mich basketball game 2 days ago

He got denard robinsons name wrong. I guess it’s not just baseball players he can’t remember.

I heart Kelch

Nice to see the cream rising to the top.

(But wow, he spent 20 years doing Louisville Bats broadcasts?)

Aggressive GMs add spice to NL Central outlook

from MLB.com:

Over in Cincinnati, former Cards GM Walt Jocketty has, aside from the recent acquisition of aging World Series hero Edgar Renteria and veteran outfielders Fred Lewis and Jeremy Hermida, generally rested on the laurels of a strong stable of young players and a definitively deep pitching staff. The defending division champs have an embarrassment of riches in their rotation, with Bronson Arroyo, Johnny Cueto, Travis Wood, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake all aboard and Edinson Volquez ready for a full season’s work.

Not many clubs could afford the luxury of keeping Aroldis Chapman and his blazing fastball in a bullpen setting, but the Reds can. They can also afford to spend their winter performing routine maintenance on the roster, rather than undergoing a major overhaul.

Personally, I'm looking forward to a Kelch-Welsh combo

I think that could be very enlightening. Kelch sounds like he likes to talk about the intricacies of the game, which gives Welsh a chance to talk about baseball rather than other stuff, and that’s when he’s at his best.

I prefer Welsh to talk about the Pondarossa.

As usual

I disagree.

  1. To me, Kelch is hard to listen to, while Keels has one of the greatest announcing voices I’ve heard. I agree that Kelch does a better job announcing, but I’d much rather listen to Keels call a game.
  2. tHom does a good job. To me, his biggest problem is being teamed with Brantley; I think Cowboy Idiocy © is contagious.

Are you suggesting Brantley spent some time in Crawford, TX?

When you come to the fork in the road, take it.

Again

In terms of listening to them talk, yes. Kelch is technically better, but Keels is much easier to listen to.

Catherine Zeta-Jones isn’t going to win an Oscar anytime soon, but I’d much rather look at her in a movie than Merryl Streep.

Gotcha

I can dig that. Keels’ velvety baritone is certainly something to behold. It’s funny, because he is some kind of ugly.

As someone who never watches broadcasts on FS Ohio,

I’m just glad to hear he’ll still be on the radio this year. I momentarily panicked when I saw the headline.

by the finest muffins on Jan 14, 2011 6:24 PM EST reply actions

I have never heard Kelch

but I welcome the news because he is not Keels. Thom is par for the course these days, which means just generally not very good, and just hope that he’s paired with Cowboy as seldom as possible. I’ll be interested to see how Kelch gels with the others.
