Also, I'm interested in what you guys think of Blaine Gabbert, out of Missouri, who some people have ranked as the #1 quarterback. I have some pretty major thoughts on that, but I want to see what you guys think first. WOO!! College football is almost over, so we're ALMOST TO BASEBALL!!!

well, that's not true.
pickens was as big of a clubhouse distraction as TO or Ocho.
also, he didn’t put up the numbers of TOcho.
When they were at the 15 or closer, it was automatic to throw Pickens the fade route to the back corner of the end zone

Nice play by Newton on that falling down play.

I wanted him to raise his stock this game, not lower it.
I want Fairley to fall to the Bengals. There’s a much better chance of that if Newton is one of the top 3.

I think Gabbert's probably going to be the best QB out there
but I’d be willing to bet Mallett goes first. Buffalo is the only team in the top 5 who might take a QB in the first round, and I seriously doubt either Gabbert or Mallett goes top 5.

There's a decent shot he's the next spread offense wonder.
He’s gifted physically, but he’s spent his career making decisions in the spread offense. What will make or break him (along with Newton) is the team interviews. They’ll pick his brain on how to make reads in a pro offense. If he does well, he’ll be a high pick.

I didn't like him as well as either of our last two QB's, Daniel or Smith.
He’s the most gifted physically, and has the most potential, but I just don’t think he’s ready mentally to play pro. He made a lot of dumb mistakes that cost games, including the bowl game. I think he needed another year in college.

Those two prove the point about worrying about guys who played in the spread, though.
Both were great in college, in the spread. Now Daniel is unemployed. Smith is succeeding, but not at QB. He only gets in as QB for WC and stuff.

Other than Vick, is there another spread QB who's done anything in the NFL?

Brees and Orton come to mind.

A few points
- Chase is a backup with the Saints.
- Neither Daniel nor Smith were expected to be NFL quality quarterbacks. Daniel is a small guy, and Smith was expected to move to WR anyway. I don’t know that either of those guys are great examples against the spread.

Sort of a Tebow-esque run.
What are your guys’ thoughts on Newton as a prospect? He’ll either be the next Roethlisberger or the next Jamarcus Russell. I’m leaning towards thinking Russell, but I may just be a pessimist.

I think Newton will be a better pro than Russell
simply because Cam has the work ethic to practice and get better. He doesn’t have the arm of Roethlisberger (or even Russell) but he has the tools to be a QB in the League someday.
I can’t think of a good comp for him in the league other than Tebow, who hasn’t really played enough to show what he can do. Another possibility may be David Garrard.

The first thing that comes to mind with Tebow is the shitty mechanics. He’s working to fix them, but as far as I can tell Newton has pretty nice form on his throws.

That's one of the things that lessens the Tebow comp.
I think Tebow will be able to get it together, but you’re right, Newton’s a better passer than Tebow. Garrard is probably the better comp, maybe Vince Young.

I'm also not sure Newton has the passion of Tebow.
He loves the game, sure, but not many guys come along that have the passion Tebow has.

I never really payed attention to that stuff with baseball until I came to RR and everyone knew all about it. I’m trying to learn that stuff.
I understand the business side pretty well in basketball. So if you ever need a crash course on the Larry Bird Exception, the mid-level exception, luxury tax or the Vet’s Minimum, I’m your guy. LOL

The NFL salary stuff is fairly simple.
You pretty much pay what you want and stay under the cap. League minimum hovers around $300K, depending on the year.

The teams in Missouri have sucked forever, my dad was a Browns fan, but I never got into them. I kind of follow the teams that ex-Tigers are on. I usually root for the Bengals too though.
