Reds sign OF Fred Lewis
"The Reds announced that they signed Fred Lewis to a one-year deal (Twitter link). It's a $900K major league deal, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon (on Twitter).
...
Lewis has less than four years of big league service time, so the Reds can keep him through 2013 by offering arbitration.
...
The team also officially announced its one-year deal with Edgar Renteria."

Well, at least we don't have to worry about Renteria leading off now.
It will be interesting to see how Dusty handles the Gomes/Lewis platoon.
Watch it, ass blood.
Guess it'll be a fight between Lewis and Hermida for that 5th OF spot.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
No I think its a fight between Hermida and Heisey for #5
The major league deal pretty much guarantees that.
I’m okay with that. I don’t think Heisey should be guaranteed anything.

yes
Plus, Heisey still has options. They can stash him in Louisville for future use, if necessary.
And looking at his record and his numbers last year, a case might be made that he would benefit from more time in the minors. He hasn’t spent a full year in AAA yet, and he didn’t hit well last year (for him).
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I agree
He’s only had 360 PAs in AAA. I mean, he’s 26, so going to AAA kinda sucks for him, but if he doesn’t win the starting LF or CF job, it would probably be better for him in the long run.

Last Bench Spot
Looks like the bench will consist of Cairo, Renteria, Lewis, and Hernandez. With only one spot left, I would say that Juan Francisco will be in the discussion with Hermida and Heisey for that last spot too.
However, they will probably do what they did last year with the roster, and start their #5 starter (Leake or Wood) in AAA to have the extra bat for the first few games before the 5th starter is needed.

Actually, I think the answer is Barry Larkin.
Larkin wore #15 in 1986 & 1987. After Kurt Stillwell was traded, Larkin took the more desirable(?) #11. Stillwell had a gold chain with the #11 on it, and when the two shortstops faced off in spring training in 1988, Stillwell gave it to Larkin after Kurt reached second. Classy move.
But #15 always reminds me of Jeff Treadway.

Reasons this deal is good
1) .354 OBP lifetime against righties.
2) At only $900k, this is practically a minor league deal, but
3) With team control through 2013, they can make use of him as a bench guy for a while, or if he plays well, he could have a bit of trade value.
4) Also, if he completely sucks, or if someone in AAA is breaking the door down, 900k isn’t that much to eat/trade
5) .354 OBP lifetime against righties
6) At least passable defense in LF, which would be a huge upgrade over….
7) NO MORE JONNY GOMES AGAINST RIGHTIES!!

Soo... if we get the following (ideal) breakdown:
Gomes 200 PA @ .280/.368/.480/.855
Lewis 330 PA @ .270/.340/.420/.760
Heisey 200 PA @ .260/.335/.450/.785
You get… 730 PA @ .270/.345/.444/.788 w/ roughly average defense overall.. Unless Heisey improves a pretty substantial amount or Hermida posts a really nice slash line, this isn’t going to happen. Gomes will probably also get more PA than this, and more PA against righties than I’m thinking. I’m looking at Heisey vs. LHP/RHP. Heisey’s splits are amazing against righties, but that’s a VERY limited sample. As are all the samples I’m looking at. So basically, this info is worthless, but we can hope that we get .275/.350/.450/.800 from our LF with average defense.
Why not a Heisey Lewis platoon
with Gomes used primarily as a late inning PH.
I know its not gonna happen because they brought back Gomes for a reason, but can’t we dream. I really like Gomes as a person, but i really wish we wouldn’t have brought him back this year.
