SIS - Kids Music that Doesn't Suck
So, a bunch of you are musicians, and a bunch of you have kids. Probably some of you musicians have kids. If so, you know that the great majority of kids music out there was originally developed for use at Abu Ghraib. 10 minutes of that stuff, and I'd confess to anything, just to make it stop.
I'm always on the lookout for kids music that (in this order):
#1) Doesn't drive me insane
#2) The kids like
#3) Has some redeeming musical value, in the hopes that ideas of good music will eventually sink into their little heads.
Here's what I've found, but I bet you guys have found a lot more.
Dan Zanes. Formerly of the Del Fuegos, he now does funky folk-style kids music that's actually pretty good. I like it better than the kids do, though.
Laurie Berkner. Borders on annoying sometimes, but the kids love it. A few decent harmonies, and embarrassingly catchy tunes.
Justin Roberts. Excellent stuff, loved by kids and Mom and Dad. Musically interesting, lyrically interesting, and yet still the kids like it. This guy remembers what it's like to be 8 years old.
Ralph's World. Ralph Agresta (?). Kids and Mom like it, I'm meh. At least it's not cloying.
Who else is out there worth listening to?

And the kid music gets annoying quick
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, is just a freight train coming your way...

If a guy hits .300 every year, what does he have to look forward to? I always tried to stay around .190, with three or four RBI. And I tried to get them all in September. That way I always had something to talk about during the winter.

Wait
My oldest is two, I didn’t realize there was kids music in my future.

Kids like the Ting Tings, I've noticed
so that’s a decent place to start. Also, Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy was pretty huge with them.
When I was a kid, we listened to a lot of Cat Stevens in the car, I know, when my folks were trying to get us to go to sleep. ABBA was used to wake us up/tire us out. ABBA may not be totally listenable to everyone, but I still have a soft spot because of the road trips.
"And then there was the USAID guy in Kandahar who drove a giant pink Cadillac, which the locals set on fire one day. If you wanted to destroy something symbolic during a riot, you just could not do better than that. Good stuff." - Ghosts of Alexander
Totally Raffi.
I liked The Beatles a ton when I was young.(er)
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
Don't know the title of it
But there is a really cool album of Ella Fitzgerald music geared towards kids. Basically they took the most catchy and straightforward tunes out of her catalog (there might be other singers on it too, I can’t remember)
kids love it and they are listening to stuff from the great American songbook. Google Ella Fitzgerald kids album
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka

Miss Ella's Playhouse?
That looks pretty cool.

how would you feel if they called and wanted your song?
it’d be like muzak.
the money would be nice, but see that bird flying out the window? That’s your artistic integrity.

That's an interesting question
You gotta take the money/exposure, but it WOULD totally suck to see your baby murdered like that.

then again,
if your baby is “Boom Boom Pow,” maybe it wouldn’t hurt so much.

barenaked ladies did a kids album

They Might Be Giants did a kids album. "No" I think.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
TMBG has done mulltiple kids albums, which are pretty good
No, Here come the, 123s, and science.
This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the caftans.
TMBG is generally pretty kid-friendly
Anamaniacs were playing their songs before they were specifically targeted at children.
I remember liking them as a kid.

how could I forget TMBG?
We’ve got Here Come the ABCs, Here Come the 123s, and Here Comes Science.
ABCs and 123s are great. Science is a little too expository and a little too preachy. I do like The Sun Is A Mass, though.

gotta be careful with TMBG, though
Their regular stuff sounds good for kids, but then you get lines like:
He had the same obsequious manner, that was the reason I had him killed….
“There goes the bride” as she walked out the door…
Now let’s toast the sad cold fact
Our love’s never coming back
And we’ll race to the bottom of a glass
So narrow your eyes
hilarious, but not kids music.

Back in college
I unwittingly played “Spider” for my little cousin. Gave him a nightmare. I felt awful.

What I've found works best for both parties is a mix cd
My son prefers a mix CD that he got as a birthday party favor. It has a lot of different styles on it from kids music to blues. It’s his favorite thing to listen to.
