Who will be there to greet Joey when he homers in the playoffs?
We've talked about this some already, but I figured we should hammer it all out tonight since we have time. Who is on your playoff roster?
To me, these guys are locks:
C: Ryan Hanigan, Ramon Hernandez
IF: Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Orlando Cabrera, Scott Rolen, Paul Janish, Miguel Cairo
OF: Jay Bruce, Jonny Gomes, Drew Stubbs, Chris Heisey
SP: Bronson Arroyo, Johnny Cueto
RP: Francisco Cordero, Nick Masset, Arthur Rhodes, Aroldis Chapman
P: Travis Wood, Edinson Volquez, Homer Bailey
That's 21 of 25 spots that are no doubters to me. I think the closest to a debatable player on that list is Heisey, but I could see him get playing time as a pinch runner and defensive replacement, so he's on.
Who then gets the last 5 spots? Here's who is left:
C/IF: Corky Miller, Juan Francisco, Chris Valaika
OF: Jim Edmonds, Laynce Nix
Other: Yonder Alonso - I list him as other because for him to be on the roster, someone (Edmonds) would have to go on the 60-day DL
P: Bill Bray, Aaron Harang, Sam LeCure, Mike Leake, Logan Ondrusek
Carlos Fisher, Matt Maloney, Jordan Smith, and Jared Burton are in the same boat as Alonso, though Mike Lincoln, Jose Arredondo, and Russ Springer are already on the 60-day. I don't think there is any chance Fisher or Burton makes the playoffs though. I'm doubtful on the other two.
I think the Reds will take 11 pitchers and 14 fielders. That leaves 2 pitching spots and 2 hitting spots.
The biggest issue is the health of Nix and Edmonds. If they are healthy enough to be there, I think they'll make it along with Paul Janish. If one or the other can't make it, do you take Juan Francisco, Yonder Alonso, or Chris Valaika.
On the pitching side, it's probably going to be Bray and Ondrusek, but Smith might get the jump over one of them. I don't think Maloney really has much of a shot, especially if the Reds have 3 lefties in the bullpen already (and maybe 4 if Wood doesn't start).
So, I guess what I'm saying is, there really isn't a lot to debate, is there? Well, then, feel free to talk about whatever!
