What does the "Red" in Red Reporter really stand for?

I recently joined Red Reporter because I have been a lifelong Reds fan of more than 30 years.  I followed along in a few game threads before joining so I could get an inkling for the types of issues discussed and get a feel for some of the different personalities that frequent the joint.  There appear to be lots of knowledgeable fans around here along with some not as much, myself included.  I enjoyed the discussions about the Reds mostly, but I also enjoyed some of the non baseball related banter that frequents the site.  There are also some things and topics that I didn't enjoy so much, and those I mostly skimmed over or didn't read.

In addition to this site, I also belong to a number of other sites on SB Nation.  In fact I even joined Viva El Birdos so that if I felt compelled to, I could join in on the discussions of our biggest current division rival.  I even posted a rebuttal to one of their fanposts as it related to the Reds-Cards brawl that several on this site found and brought to the attention of others on the site. Thanks to all who took the time to read and if compelled recommend that post by the way!

However, yesterday, several moderators brought up a topic that I don't agree with at all.  It seems that they don't like it when RR members bring topics or opinions from other sites to this one for discussion.  Or perhaps it's just from that one particular site?  I find this thought process to be rather odd, and in fact quite disturbing.  Of course, I am also one of the offending parties who have made posts referencing thoughts from that "other" site. In fact, I am the one who coined "VEWLB"  in reference to said site which several members at RR have taken to using on a regular basis.  So perhaps I am a bit biased on this issue. Or, perhaps, I am just completely off base and reading too much into things.

What bothers me is that seemingly everything is allowed on this site.  I have seen non baseball discussions regarding so many topics that trying to list them all would be impossible to do.  I have seen vulgar and offensive language which doesn't bother me in the least, but which others may find offensive.  I have tried to sift through inside jokes between long time members while confusedly scratching my head in bewilderment.  None of these things are related to the Reds in any way shape or form, yet they are allowed and encouraged.  And I have absolutely no problem with that at all.

Seeing that seemingly everything was allowed here, I decided to re-post some topics or comments that I read at another site because first and foremost they were Reds related.  I also found them either humorous, asinine, or worthy of discussion.  Some of them were replied to and some were not.  Just like many other posts around here. Of course I am also not the only one who has done this, so seemingly others see some positives in discussing the merits, or lack thereof, of someones opinions who differ from our own.

Evidently a number of those in power who manage the site don't care for that and have strongly encouraged the rest of us from refraining from posting them in the future. I don't know if that implies that continuing to do so will lead to a ban or not, but the underlying message was pretty clear to me.  Conform to our way of thinking or else. (Risk ostracism, criticism, banishment, etc.)

I'm sure that this post will be met with a ton of criticism and frankly I don't really care.  I have always stated my mind and stood up for things that I believe in.  Being a former military member who served this country in defense of it's core principles, I find the sort of "group think" mentality implied in the discouraging of baseball related discussions originating elsewhere very disturbing.  It would be intolerable to me if the "Red" in Red Reporter stands for something more sinister than what most of us assume it stands for.

I rec'd this, and I stand by my mini-speech yesterday, for two reasons:

1-I’ve seen many of y’all get quoted, often out of context, on other sites as examples of how we are all backwards, douchey, classless fans. Seems like many of you are doing the same and it’s kind of silly.

2-It’s a bit rich for us to call them “Whiny Little Bitches” if we’re going to whine about everything they say and do. Honestly, the whiniest and most immature stuff on RR is when people are bitching about VEB.

I think you're reading wayyyyy too much into things

We let a lot more shit go there than many (any?) of the other SBN sites. I don’t think that it’s necessarily what you posted that people didn’t agree with as much as the tone that came with it.

We’ve never been a community that’s big on attacking others personally. Taking a post from VEWLB that’s interesting in some way wouldn’t be frowned upon at all, but more often than not, the point of bringing that over is “look at this idiot”. Is that a tone that we want RR to be known for? It’s not something we’ve ever done when we were losing, why start it now? Karma’s a bitch.

So my suggestion is let’s keep the making fun of Cardinals fans to a minimum when they’re not coming over to our house causing trouble. If you have something to say about a post over there, post it over there. We’re just fans, we don’t need bulletin board material. We already know what it’s like rooting for a shitty team, let’s let them wallow in their tears in peace. Unless they come over here (or post shot from our site on theirs), in which case, it’s on bitches.

More-over, This post should be kibosh’d. Just because it’s the internet, doesn’t mean we want to hear your option. And don’t bitch when someone moderates you because you’re trolling around on a site that doesn’t belong to you. If you want an argument, then take this whiny rant to VEB.

I bowled last night... Team Name - THE SULTANS

This year’s team consisting of Daughter #1’s Father in law, My Son and my buddy Mark (oh and me) are holding on to 7th place in an 18 team league. I did not represent RR well last night as my scores were as follows:
164
179
143

By the way King, I was banned something like 3 or 4 times before finally gaining entree to RR. Cause I didn’t understand the ‘roolz’. RR is a lot like The USA’s democracy – there’s an underlying respect for everyone and all things…but by the same token all things are fair game within relative boundaries (agreed upon and understood by those who visit this place with reularity) . Like a good democracy it is unfair and highly biased but ultimately there is a obc of rights and a strong adherence to King Slyde’s court. In a nutshell…it is a free zone that is self policing…. and that is why it is so fun and interesting and exasperating..oh and it is sanctioned by ACM (the American Council on Sabremetrics).

If a guy hits .300 every year, what does he have to look forward to? I always tried to stay around .190, with three or four RBI. And I tried to get them all in September. That way I always had something to talk about during the winter.

your opinion is just as valid as anyone else’s, and you are free, welcomed, and encouraged to post as much (or as little) as you like.

regarding your initial objection, that’s up to you as well. no one is going to ban you for posting “look at this idiot” material from VEB. it just kinda makes you look like a jerk when you do it (or when anyone else does it). and it would REALLY make you look like a jerk if it started something. we managers of the blog are ultimately responsible if something like that were to happen, and we dont want that. we want to talk about baseball, not moderate a blog war.

You will enjoy this ridiculously good season even more if you tune out the natterings of other team’s superfans. They are truly inconsequential.

Also, it wasn’t as if it was one or two comments from VEB that were re-posted over here. It was in every damn game thread. It got old. I’d much rather talk about our team’s play (or SEC football, Jake’s dietary concerns, social justice in Latin America, etc., etc.) than the worst crap coming out of Cardinals’ fans’ mouths.

I appreciate your input

I have enjoyed this season more than any season the Reds have had since 1990. If they finish in the same position they did that year then this season will likely even surpass that one.

Tuning out differing opinions is something I try not to do. What other fans think or say don’t often bother me. I sometimes learn new things, find humor in their angst or even feel some empathy because I have been there and done that over the course of my many years on this planet.

Like many others, I also find quite a few things at nearly every site I’ve been to that I don’t agree with, don’t understand, or just don’t want to read because it doesn’t interest me. Instead of trying to force my opinion on those folks though, I have learned to ignore or skip over them. Something I clearly wish others would do more often.

But I do want to explain something to everyone. It’s not the posting of stuff from other sites that is the problem. If you see a rumor about someone being available or TLR getting arrested again on another site, post that. What bothers me is the “Hey, look what this moran said!” stuff that has become all too common lately. You may be just having a laugh, but it ends up meaning more work for the mods since now we have to start paying attention for people coming over to fight back. We don’t want to be hunting for people to ban or comments to delete.

We’ve never had a problem with this in the past. Almost every interaction we’ve had with other sites in the past has been in fun. This is why we haven’t had a rule about this. We’ve always been able to maintain civility both on this site and others. Let’s try to keep it that way.

The fact that this is a big deal is fucking RAD.

Know why? Because we’re winning.

How often did we ever give 2 craps about checking out other teams websites to see what they said about our beloved Reds? I never did…just like I never wanted to watch ESPN’s MLB highlight reels. We weren’t on it, we weren’t good, and I frankly didn’t care to hear what outsiders said about the team that I loved.

This year has been different…pleasantly, surprisingly different. We’re winning, and frankly I often don’t know what to do with myself.

I don’t want to sound like I’ve been here for years because I have not. It’s been nearly 2 years since I started coming over to RR, and the premise of my first visits were to find Reds fans who were likeminded and knowledgable about not just our team, but the game of baseball, so as to try to find good ideas as to how to improve our crappy team.

Flash forward to 2010…we can’t talk about that nearly as in depth anymore. There are limited trade ideas, FA proposals, or butts-in-seats gimmicks to propose these days, as our franchise is winning in bunches, our AAA team is winning in bunches, and our only high paid players are coming off the books (if we “want” them to, does it get better than this??) As a result, the underdog, scrutinize-the-books-and-farm-system mentality more often than usual has ben eschewed for the look-how-good-we-are mindset. That’s hard to argue with, but it can get obnoxious.

The Cards, be they whiney little bitches or kick-our-ass multi timed divisional champions, have whipped our asses a bunch. They’re behind us in the standings this year…I get it. That doesn’t mean I really want to go smear it in their face and then smear their bloggers over here. From the best of my knowledge, they never did it to us.

Essay completed, and apologies for the squinting I’ve forced, but I think what Slyde and the mods (band name…?) are getting at is the “act like you’ve been here before, because we’ll be there again, and again, and again…” mantra. I like that. I don’t want to fuck that up.

Coebra, I loved your poem btw. I just really don’t like the Cardinals to the point where I really couldn’t care if they’d solved world peace on VEWLB…I don’t want to read it.

I don't really want to single you out for this, but you sort of did it yourself.

The mods chastised you for posting something ONCE and your FIRST reaction is to exclaim ‘groupthink! censorship! oppression!’, with, of course, an oblique reference to another improper use of the first amendment. This is a “reds” “discussion” “community”. There is absolutely NOTHING crazy in the owner and moderators of a website deciding what the bounds of discussion is going to be.

Look, this site is not a free-for-all. Did someone ban you? Did they delete your comments? When someone disagrees with a group, why do they immediately shout ‘groupthink!’ as if there’s no reason whatsoever for multiple people to have a difference of opinion? Yes, it is groupthink. The group thinks you’re wrong. There are definitely people here who do want to dredge up nutty comments from other sites, for criticsm, rebuttal, and general derision; most of the mods don’t want to deal with the crap that stirs up (though with the number they have, it’s pretty hard to establish a quorum), and I don’t like it just because I find it both cruel and boring, which, honestly, is a fairly unique combination.

This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the caftans.

Fair enough

I have no problem with being singled out, being wrong, or being corrected (for the most part). I just don’t like it when people tell me to do something without giving me legitimate reasons or explanations for their requests.

I wanted some answers and knew this approach would hit a nerve, thus resulting in some dialogue behind the reasoning why this issue is such a hot topic around here. Was it necessarily the right or best way to get my answer? Probably not. But ultimately it served its purpose as it appears to be a relatively hot topic, and mostly devoid of the innane banter permeating the large majority of the normal threads around here.

Bottom line is I didn’t understand why folks who tried to steer the conversation in threads back to a discussion of the Reds were being singled out.. I now have a better understanding of why some around here feel the way they do. That’s a good thing.

I pretty much ignore VEB (that's probably a good thing), but I see where KC is coming from.

There’s no reason to mess with individuals and start a fight, nor do I really think there’s much reason to ever post on their blog, but I don’t think some back and forth trash talk is going to do a ton of harm. Don’t go over that and act completely classless and ban the people that post over here from there who do the same and it seems like a pretty easy fix. It’s not like we have raging daily flame wars with them and enjoying the misery of Cardinals fans absolutely should be one of the things Reds fans get to enjoy, and let the discussion of Reds/Cards baseball continue. By and large I think King Coebra is overstating the point, but there have been instances where certain mods get exceptionally overzealous in their moderation of Reds/Cards discussion.

Basically: Don’t go over there, drop the banhammer if any of them come over and start anything, and if you’re sharing moronic comments from them, at least don’t single out the person that said it making them more likely to come over and start shit.

FWIW

We never threatened to ban anybody who brought stuff over from VEB. My complaint was mainly that it was annoying to have to read so much of what they said in our threads and that it would be something that people would bitch about if we found out it was happening to us. I don’t think it’s a banable offense. I also don’t believe in banning people from other sites who are coming over here unless they are total douchenozzles.
