Off Day SIS - What are your playoff plans

That's right, I said it. I don't care.

The Reds WILL be in the playoffs this year for the first time since 1995. I thought to myself, "Where were you the last time the Reds made the playoffs, jch? And better yet, where will you be this year?" Damned good question, me.

Star-divide

In the fall of 1995, I was stationed in Biloxi, MS at Keesler AFB where I was training to be the highly skilled tape monkey you all know and love today. I walked around with my head held high, a gleam in my eye, and a spring in my pants. Truthfully I wasn't a huge Reds fan back then and I was waaaaay out of market, so I rooted hard for Junya and the Mariners after their magical run at the end of the season and dramatic ALDS victory. Alas, this was not to be as the loaded-as-hell Indians (they won the division by THIRTY games in a 144 game schedule, FTH?) dispatched them in the second round. Of course, the Indians are from Cleveland which means they are not allowed to win a major sports championship ever again (LBJ wrote some kind of law or something). The Atlanta Braves prevailed for their only championship during the "glory years".

Since then I have lived in four states, married twice, had two kids, and have bought two houses and numerous vehicles. I'd like to say I'm wiser now than I was 15 years ago but recent events involving a ladder and a chainsaw suggest otherwise.

This year, I fully plan on making it to at least one playoff game at GABP. I CANNOT wait to feel the excitement of playoff baseball in the city I call home. I think we've seen the momentum build precipitously over the last ten days or so with the widening of the lead, Chapmania, and the increased national exposure. Is it gonna suck paying that much for a ticket? Sure. Is it gonna be worth it? EVERY FUCKING PENNY.

So I ask you intrepid Red Reporters, where were you and what were you doing the last time the Reds made the playoffs, and what are your plans this year?

In return for humoring me, I offer you a video of a monkey doing a handstand on a tightrope-walking goat. Enjoy.

I'll be watching lots of baseball on TV.

I haven’t found any other Reds fans here. I’m secretly hoping Milwaukee makes a crazy run to the wildcard and the Reds play them in the NLCS so I can see games.

Freshman in college in '95

I remember watching the Braves series with a guy from Atlanta who’s still a good friend. The sweep wasn’t particularly painful because I was all OMG COLLEGE!!!!! at the time.

Hoping for a Reds-Phillies matchup so I can go to at least one game.

by ken on Sep 2, 2010 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

That's what I'm hoping for too

I’ll be in Jersey during the entirety of the first two rounds, so I’m hoping the Reds take the best record and the Phils take the wild card. There’s also an outside chance I’d be in Miami during the World Series, so if the Reds end up making it that far and play the Rays, I’ll be sorely tempted to ditch my fellow travelers and try to head up to Tampa for a game.

I was a huuuuge Pete Schourek fan that season...

I remember missing the series against the Dodgers because I was out of town, but getting to catch the highlighs on the local news at the hotel room. (MARK LEWIS PH GRAND SLAM!) I remember those playoffs fondly because that’s the last season I got to share with my grandfather, who died in April of ’96.

I fucking hate the Braves.

2010: I’m going to some playoff games, bitches! :) I have PTO stored up and ready to go!

I remember that was when Jeff Brantley wasn’t annoying as shit.

And I also remember Reggie Sanders striking out more than Stubbs against the Braves.

In '95, I was 15

Neck deep in collectable card games and being generally nerdy. The baseball infatuation didn’t really begin until college and ’99. So, I have almost zero memories of the last foyer into the playoffs.
Presently, I’m out in Iowa, so I plan on gluing myself to my computer monitor for all but one game and watching that way. For the other game, reason, cost and PTO be damned, the wife and I are making it there.

I'm nowhere near Cincinnati

And will probably be watching on TV.

Thinking about entering the lottery anyway, just in case. There are actually cheap seats in Cincinnati. Even for the WS.

Fall of 95

I had just moved into an apartment on King Ave, in Columbus, Sophomore year at OSU.
I am hoping for a little luck getting to a game, but I am going to try.

by Eastwindquinn on Sep 2, 2010 5:25 PM EDT reply actions

In 1994 I was at the stadium for the final game of the season that ended early due to greed.

I did not buy a single regular season ticket in 1995 as a protest…until the playoffs! I was there for NLDS game 3 (clincher). When the next round came, I couldn’t get tickets, so I watched sadly at home. During the Braves’ clinching victory in game 4, I was at UD Arena in Dayton, listening with an earbud from my Sony Walkman as I sat in the cheap seats watching an exhibition between the Indian Pacers and the Chicago Bulls. It was the first time Dennis Rodman had put on a Chicago uniform, and Jordan did a giant, flying dunk…as did Greg Maddux.

It will be a tough sell with the wife, but I hope to come into town for a playoff series, both this year and next. :)

I will make one playoff game this year, but I doubt any more than that. Unless I am pulled out of the lottery and can buy them at face value.

I was wrapping up 7th grade in Lexington,

and I’m pretty sure I was at a soccer tournament in Evansville during the NLDS, and I remember going to a rib restaurant with my dad and a couple of the other players and their dads to watch the games. Total fucking blast, and when we got home that Sunday night, my dad showed me his Game 2 ticket from the ‘75 Series. For sentimentality’s sake, I hope I can bring that one out again this year.

As for 2010, conveniently enough I’m moving at the end of the month to Denver, so right now I’m hoping like a sunufagun that the Rockies can go on a tear in September and catch the swooning Padres (and/or Giants) so I can catch the Reds at Coors Field. I’d love to see how fast Radar Love’s fastball is in thin air…imagine how far the shattered bats will fly!

Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I have no idea what playoff baseball is like.

So I plan to enjoy this year. I’m in the middle of a nightmarish month and a half of workaholic-ness, but the end of the tunnel is the first week of October, and, blessedly, I work for an organization that honors comp time. So by the time the playoffs start, I should have several days to do with as I like. At minimum, I’ll plant my behind in front of a television for every game. But I registered for the GABP lottery, just in case. Or the Phillies could make a late push for the Wild Card, right? And that’s just a quick bus or train ride away from DC! (traaaaaains!)

In 1995 I was a fresh faced 46...and the FMM and I went to a playoff game.

She had been drifting away from baseball…especially after she realized that Joe Morgan was no longer a Red. I tried to lure her back with engaging descriptions of Barry Larkin, but to no avail she had been smitten by Little Joe and none other would do. But we did have fun and I believe that the Reds lost that game, and that it was pretty nippy out that night. Mostly I remember the beer, and I remember the beer, and I remember the flask of Wild Turkey too and the beer…it was a good game…I think.

In 1995 I was in third grade

My parents let me stay up for all the playoff games. I remember the Reds sweeping through LA. I also remember my hero, Pete Shoureck pitching the Reds into the 9th inning against Atlanta, before allowing the Braves to tie the game, which they went on to win.

1995 was the first season I remember following, I was upset when Ron Gant left, and it sucked when it was announced that Shoureck would have season ending surgery in 1996.

I will be watching the games around my classes this year. If the Reds make it to the World Series I need the Reds to sweep, game 5 is scheduled for November 1, the day I leave for Turkey. I would hate to wait this long and miss the Reds winning the World Series. Although I suppose I could watch most of game 5 in a bar at O’Hare, my flight leaves quite late.

Joey Votto is my MVP.

During the Braves series I bet a kid down the street $5 a game. Not one of my smarter moments.

I really had no sense of how special a winning season was. The Reds had been pretty good most of my life, albeit only a playoff team twice. I definitely appreciate this year far more.
