Make for your swooning divans
Joey Votto interviewed by Cincinnati Magazine. Extols virtues of OPS. Reads the The Brothers Karamazov. Occasionally accidentally reads about the Reds on the internet. I need a smelling salt.

Yeah, those guys and the Cincinnati Reds. They're a terrible football team. / Because they're a baseball team? / Exactly. You know who's the worst football team? The Philadelphia Flyers. - Best Show

somebody photoshop this next to
this.

"The USA despite its flaws and corruption and overall messiness is still a great and powerful instrument of freedom and hope for the entire world." - Madville
Huh
If Votto thinks Cabrera is that key to the team, I’ll take him at his word. Maybe having him hurt could end up benefiting us… we get rid of his stats and hold on to that leadership. Hmm.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
My thoughts too.
I find it interesting that he said the core that holds the team together is Rolen, O-Cab and Gomes.

remember
this interview was done months ago. back then, Gomes was wielding Thor’s Hammer.
but yeah, i will never begrudge Lando anything ever again. if Joey loves him, i love him.

I doubt that changes the intangibles that Jonny brings.
This team has needed a crazy* that’s willing to fight for a decade.

I like how Votto Says "that is between us" when asked if he owed Bronson for getting the game over with quickly
Following Bronson, I would not be suprised if that meant hooker

This was a great interview, and I'm pretty impressed with the guy who conducted it.
Some interesting and non-cliche questions in there.
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka
My thoughts exactly.
Well done on both ends. Ask the question on a touchy subject once, and gently let him expound shortly after. Well done. Joey is a thoughtful, bright guy.
You are as dumb as anything you hate.
He played Ken Griffey Jr Baseball?
my brothers and I played that thing to death. My favorite feature was the create-a-player where you could have the announcet say the player’ss name if you combined names form real rosters. That was fun.
I thought I had read seomwhere a while ago he liked basketball—clearly he is a major fan.I used to enjoy the Lakers a number of years ago, but various things made me stop following them (yeah including Kobe gate, but I also just followed NBA muchless, partly because I enjoy baseball more). The important thing is that his fan devotion to the Lakers doesn’t lead to him going to tinsle town. I’d hate to wake up one day and see Votto saying in the paper “I’m taking my talents to LA”.!!!!!
As for the reading and OPS, that was impressive. He should manage! In all seirousness, he appears to have a thorough understanding of the game and recent metrics—unlike Failcoeur.
Thanks for the link, that was a nice read.

Just off-night fodder. And it’s new to a lot of us. Also, who cares.

Who care how 'old' this article is?
The content is very revealing and interesting and the content is neither old nor new…but continuing…
"I think walks are overrated unless you can run... If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps. But the guy who walks.. they're clogging up the bases.. ."

I have the uncomfortable feeling that Joey Votto would really not like me.
This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the losing.
why do you say that?
because I know your not a Cubs fan. I justt stopped by BCB in anticipation of the game tomorrow and they aren’t as fired up as I thought they might be—I think there are so many internal problems ofr the Cubs at this point that a feud with Votto,Brennaman and the Reds isn’t high on the list.
Most pro athletes wouldn't like us and vice versa.

Yeah, but I generally feel the same way about them.
I don’t really think I’d want to spend more than an evening with Gomes, Bruce, etc. But Joey Votto seems smart, cool, rational… and he would probably think I’m a ninny.
This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the losing.
I don't think I'd want to spend more than an evening with any of them
Votto included.
But…I thought you were planning to marry Homer Bailey?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I do that shit in half a second. Not because I want to hang with Pete but
I think the shit we’d get into would be awesome.
Similar to Gomes. If I went out with Gomes and there wasn’t a bar fight I’d be very, very upset.

in other words
if there wasn’t a bar fight, you’d start one.
I bet Gomes can hammer some car bombs, no problem.

Well, after we were married, we wouldn't spend time with each other.
Isn’t that how marriages work? I mean, I’m also planning to divorce him.
The real problem is that Joey Votto is like the kryptonite to my vast superiority complex, and therefore his disdain would hurt far more than that of any of those other idiots.
This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the losing.

Interesting.
I agree that it’s highly possible a famous athlete would turn his nose up at any of us. But was there something in this interview that makes you say this? I don’t think he comes off as disdainful of anyone or anything in particular here.

No, but he does seem very opinionated, and like he doesn't suffer fools.
I am a fool.
This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the losing.
Look at that picture that accompanies the article.
Joey Votto is a fool, too! An adorable fool who plays like he’s been touched by the baseball gods, but a goofy dude nonetheless.

I am really looking forward to 20 years from now when Slyde writes his book on the 2010 Championship Reds...
…to see if Joey ever opens up more on how he has worked through his issues. I don’t think he’s far enough removed from it and I feel like he wants to just focus entirely on playing baseball for fear that dwelling on it at all will reignite the depression, but I do feel like it could be an inspiration to folks suffering with it. But like he said, he doesn’t owe us that.
Also, I really do hope this team has the type of success which requires books be written about it, because I feel like there are so many interesting aspects of which we only have a small glimpse. Things like: what has Rolen, Gomes, and O-Cab done to earn their “veteran leadership” creds? How do the pitchers on this team feel with such an abundance of good pitchers ready to take their spot? What do the players really think of Dusty & Walt? Are they mad that Walt didn’t make any moves at the trade deadline or are they happy that the chemistry wasn’t tampered with? Explanation of why a team of “rookies” and “has-beens” with average to below-average offense has managed to be so prolific… (i.e. I feel like they may have a chip on their collective shoulders, especially Votto). What is the interaction between the stars (Votto, Rolen, and Phillips) and the turds? What efforts are being made to fix Bruce and Stubbs and are any teammates taking some ownership of this? So many questions on the Janish/O-Cab situation…

nice post. I hope books are written about this team as well. Also...
pumped about your use of the word “turd.” By far one of my favorite insults.
