This Day in Reds History - August 30
On this date in 1964 the Reds beat the Astros 7-6.
Frank Robinson doubled with two out in the bottom of the ninth to score Vada Pinson, from first base, and give the Reds a split of their double header. The win kept the Reds in second place, five and one half games behind Philadelphia, and help set up one of the most exciting months in Reds history. The Reds would go 18-11 in September and finish one game behind St. Louis for the pennant. The Reds dropped four of their last five (shutout three of the last five), including an excruciating 1-0 sixteen inning loss to the Pirates, in an unbelievable race with the Phillies and Cardinals.

chic Ruiz - "Bench me or trade me"
If a guy hits .300 every year, what does he have to look forward to? I always tried to stay around .190, with three or four RBI. And I tried to get them all in September. That way I always had something to talk about during the winter.

if the Reds had won the pennant in 64
they probably would not have traded Frank Robinson the following year.
I don't know about that...
Frank was outspoken and aggressive, two characteristics that did not sit well in Cincinnati 46 years ago. Not from an uppity Colored Boy anyway.

same reason the Cincy media wasn't a fan of Vada
especially after he punched Lawson

Just because he carried a gun
doesn’t mean he was aggressive. Now, he was known to crowd the plate and dare pitchers to brush him back (I was only three when he was traded but heard things from my older relatives).
I can't imagine the racism in Cincinnati in '64
