I gathered that.

MLB is entertainment. Its best players are the star performers. Those guys should be on the field as much as possible.

Offending the sensibilities of anonymous umpires shouldn’t interfere with putting out the best product possible. I recognize that to some fans those sensibilities are important. I just don’t agree with it.

by ken on Aug 25, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

You have to counter that with the rules of the game

The rulebook says you have to respect the decision of the umpires. Howard clearly didn’t do that.

Plus, I found the whole thing highly entertaining!

by ZJiff30 on Aug 25, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

That's a highly subjective rule

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

i dont' believe that

a superstar shouldn’t get any more right to disrespect an umpire than a rookie upstart.

The first Votto ejection was deserved. The Rolen ejection was right, even if the umpire fucks up a call, players can’t shout in be in their face. I believe throwing a bat, helmet, etc warrants an ejection.

Should star basketball players have less fouls called on them for the same reason?

wild pitch on an intentional ball

went to the backstop, popped back to the catcher who caught it barehanded, turned and threw it to the pitcher who tagged a sliding Stubbs. As the pitcher brought the ball (in his glove) up to show the ump it popped out. Ump originally called him out and then changed it to safe when ball popped out

Stubbs tripled.

Decided to walk Janish and pitch to Homer. First IBB pitch got away from Posey and Stubbs came home. Bumgarner tagged Stubbs, and as he flipped the ball up to show Hirschbeck, it popped out.
