I’d think probably an outfielder and an infielder back up. Cabrera’s one, END can’t play outfield, they’d have to add somebody unless they go short in the OF.

Wlad and Sappelt are the only decent OFs in AAA
Griffin and Dorn are there too, and Frazier has been playing there quite a bit. Frazier’s hitting .320 in August, but he isn’t on the roster either.

Starter doesn’t make it out of the first inning, two players injured, Janish gets his first error of the season. Blech.

–The Reds just announced that Russ Springer had surgery today for a herniated disk. He is done for the season. That opens a 40-man spot. Wladimir Balentien could be added and be here for tomorrows game.
–Laynce Nixs ankle injury is not serious he said. I could at least pinch-hit tomorrow, he said.
–The Reds will look at bringing up a reliever tomorrow. Were discussing that now, Dusty Baker said. My guess is theyll bring up someone who could go long — Carlos Fisher or a starter — to protect the bullpen. I dont think it will be Aroldis Chapman.
Edmonds also thinks he doesn’t need to be DL’d.

The Fay on the injury situation
Wladimir Balentien is playing well at Triple-A Louisville. He is hitting .284 with 22 home runs and 71 RBI. He would have to be added to the 40-man.
Of players on the 40-man, Juan Francisco has played outfield in the past. He’s hitting .287 with 17 home runs and 58 RBI. Yonder Alonso played left field early in the season but he lacks the foot speed to be effective. He’s hitting .297 with 11 homers and 54 RBI.
Louisville played Monday in Indianapolis, so the Reds could probably get players to San Francisco in time for tonight’s game.

So, I bet we see END if Edmonds goes on the DL
That will give us 5 who can play the OF. If Nix has to be DL’d too, Cabrera will get his wish and be back early.
