2010 Game 107 Thread: Reds at Pirates
Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 2, 2010 7:05 PM EDT

If you haven't heard, Joey Votto "tweaked" his wrist in yesterday's game and will not be in the lineup tonight. Hopefully it doesn't matter, and hopefully he's not out for more than a week (Reds play the Cardinals starting next Monday!).
This series has the potential of being a huge letdown series. After taking 2 of 3 from the first place Braves and winning 9 of their last 11 series (yowza!), the Reds head into Pittsburgh to face the team with the worst record in the NL. You would think that this should be a cake walk of a series, but the Pirates are just 3 games under at home and 29 under on the road, and pitchers like Ohlendorf always seem to give the Reds fits.
Travis Wood has been impressive, eh? The Reds appear to be taking it easy on his pitch count, but it doesn't look like his innings are a concern. He's up to 135 this year after throwing 167 last season. I imagine they're comfortable with him reaching 200 this year, especially since he's much more acclimated to the 5-man rotation than Mike Leake. If he keeps pitching the way he has, I can see him not only being in the rotation for the rest of the season, but possibly in the playoffs since it will give them a lefty in the rotation. It's fun to think about, huh?
Would love to see a sweep since the Cardinals are playing the Astros at home. The Reds have to stay focused on keeping pace right now. Don't let their deficit increase between now and next Monday, and it'd be great to be in the lead when that series starts.
Go Reds!

And how do we resize an image again?
Seriously – can you post this tip?
"Don't turn off the TV if we've still got bats in our hands." - Dusty Baker
you can do it with image editing software
such as Photoshop. You can make the image physically smaller, and you can reduce the filesize independent of the image size. (It’s under “save for web and mobile devices” in Photoshop.)
If you’re not up for that, use a hosting service such as ImageShack.us. It will let you upload images and resize them. It’s really easy. There’s a pulldown menu with various sizes, and you can pick one. You can also leave it the original size, or optimize the file size without changing the image size.

Or if it's huge, just directly link to it

I want my image to get smaller, not larger. :P
"Don't turn off the TV if we've still got bats in our hands." - Dusty Baker
no
Well, you can, but that only resizes the image. It doesn’t reduce the file size.
You could use HTML to display a gigantic image the size of a postage stamp, but the file size would still be huge, so Slyde would still delete it.
It’s also pretty damn annoying to do that, because you’re forcing people to download a huge file, but only letting them see a small image. Plus, browsers are really bad at resizing images, so they tend to look really bad (especially if it’s a big change).

They're different kinds of players
If Stubbs could actually get on base, he could be great. His defense and speed are obviously excellent. We really need someone like him to take Cabrera out of the top of the order.
But yeah, he’s not really getting on base at all.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
But when Bruce is on his game he's one of the few players on the team who can hit it out of the park.
Stubbs reminds me of our last two center fielders, Corey Patterson and Willy Taveras. They all have insane speed but can’t get on base nearly enough for it to matter.
"Before I write I let my mind go blind and let the Lord do His thing. " -Tupac Shakur
"Opportunity is missed by most people because it looks like work." -Thomas Edison
Oh, I agree that we need a guy like Bruce, too.
I’m just saying that they’re different kinds of hitters, and will (hopefully) fill different sorts of roles. Plus, I’d rather have Bruce than Stubbs in RF, and I’d rather have Stubbs in CF.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Yeah...
Patterson 2008: .205/.238/.344
Taveras 2009: .240/.275/.285
Stubbs 2010: .229/.297/.391
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Which is to say
Stubbs has kind of sucked offensively this year, but he’s still in a completely different league from Patterson and Taveras.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Yeah so Stubbs' OBA is .22 higher than Taveras and ,47 higher than Patterson
that’s gooder enough to not compare them, and Stubbs plays better defense and has much more upside and has depressed numbers because he’s 1/35
1/35 streaks are how you end up hitting .228
"so there was a reason firefox said i spelled that wrong" -- justin007000
It's also a pretty bad slump
So if he comes out of it at all and goes back to what he was doing, .240/.310/.400 with plus defense is vastly superior to Taveras and Patterson
and I fully expect Stubbs to eventually be a .260/.330/.440 hitter
I hope he'll be that
but he won’t be that this August/September, all signs indicate.
"Red Reporter - An elitist clique full of like-minded douchebags." - BK
I think he could easily do that for the next 2 months.
There’s no way he’s going to continue to be 1/35
sooooo

Well, maybe not in St. Louis…
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
here's a story for you
the Mrs. and I went to get shakespeare in the park tix yester. Al Pacino is Shylock in Merchant of Venice. So they pass out tix at 1:00 (for free) and people line up in the park to get them. We’ve done this every show (2 per summer) every year for the past 4 years and have always gotten tix.
Well, they changed the scalping laws recently, so now rich folks pay homeless folks to camp out in the park from 3:00 the previous afternoon to get the tix, then the rich folk pay the homeless folk about $150 a ticket for their time. (Each person can get 2 tix)
So it used to be that if you got to the park at about 6:30 you’d definitely get tix. Yesterday the cutoff for getting them was the people who got there at about 10 the previous night. Probably about 200 of the first 250 people in line were homeless people scalping their tix.
Obviously it’s easy to get mad at them, but the real a-holes are the rich people working the system to get the tickets effort-free, just like rich people always work the system.
The worst part? You can get tix for about the same amount by becoming a “supporter” of the Public Theater, but these people would rather pay homeless folks to wait in line for them.
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka
It's more charitable to give the money to the homeless, no?
"so there was a reason firefox said i spelled that wrong" -- justin007000
yeah, obviously, you're missing the point
The point is, the whole theater exists to provide top quality performances to the general public for free. The Public has a very egalitarian history of “Shakespeare for the masses” but now it’s turning into Shakespeare for the rich folk who are too lazy to wait in line.
Now normal people like me who can’t really afford $150 tix can’t see the shows.
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka
Surely they'll change the process...
I mean, why not card people when they show up?
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Not legal. It's all about some new law our stupid state legislature passed making it legal to do this
But since our govt moves so damn slow, they’ll have to change the process.
Easiest way would be to make ticket distribution spread out in the boroughs, or to make it a completely virtual line that you have to sign up for online.
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka
Wait, it's not legal to make people's ID match the ticket?
I mean, airlines can do it.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
i dunno, maybe it is. But I don't think they are allowed to require id when you show the ticket.

Of course, I have to ask – why not just give out snazzy wristbands like at the carnival?
"so there was a reason firefox said i spelled that wrong" -- justin007000
That's some bullshit.
I had a friend who went to an earlier performance of that—was it a month and a half ago? She said it was fantastic.
She and a friend were waiting in line from 6 AM or whatever, and they had someone bail so they had an extra ticket to give away. She posted to Craigslist while waiting, saying that the best response (preferably in iambic pentameter) would get the ticket.
Only one person actually responded appropriately, so she gave him the ticket. She ended up talking to him the entire night, had a good time, etc. Later asked him out only for him to hint pretty strongly that yeah, he’s gay.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
well, duh. He could write in iambic pentameter.

Joey Votto said he tweaked his right wrist. Reds manager Dusty Baker said Votto sprained it.
While Baker’s version sounds more serious, both he and Votto were hopeful that Votto would be back in the lineup in a day or two.
"We hope so," Dusty Baker said. "It’s been bothering him for three days. If you don’t take care of it, it can only get worse, especially every time you check swing. It’s a sprain. Right now, were on a day-to-day"

I’d get the hell out of this town if I could actually drive too, but I’ve failed every damn test I’ve ever taken. I’m socially awkward, even my only other co-worker fucking hates my guts. I have repressed lust for one of my best friends too; she’s athletic, smart and a gorgeous southern bell. I love her. You know what it’s like; I’ve been friend zoned real hard. She’s my only real friend, besides this one kid, who I’m pretty sure is only hanging around me because he is mentally challenged. I guess he’s the only one that can tolerate me.
