Anyway, on this whole Cueto business..

I read a few people talking about whether or not it was indefensible and I’m sure this is a dead horse by now, but when people are coming at you and you’re pinned, you’re gonna defend yourself. Maybe Yadier shouldn’t have been such a whiny bitch when BP touched his shinguards and none of this would have happened.

by jsl413 on Aug 11, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

Pitcher suspensions don't hurt very much.

He’d miss like one start by a few days? And he could appeal too?

Suspensions should probably include BP, Yadier, Carpenter, Rolen, LaRue and whoever else was going after Cueto, and Cueto. Apparently Arthur took someone out? I didn’t see that.

All of it. For the most part those are

all first-time actors. With a $20,000 budget I don’t expect great performances — it’s all certainly better than porn flicks for the same budget.

Is the acting the worst part about the film? Yes. But it’s not terrible. I’ve seen mainstream Hollywood flicks with worse acting — try anything Pacino has done in the last decade.

I think that the acting is the worst part of the movie AND is terrible.

But the movie works for me despite this. I don’t judge acting performances on a curve based on budget, but solely on whether I believe the person acting is actually that character that they are portraying. Several times in that flick I am taken out of my suspension of disbelief just by the acting.

So there’s that…FWIW.

I also prefer to see movies that I know nothing about other than the director. And Kevin Smith is one of those directors whom I would blindly trust at the ticket booth. There ain’t many for me…Verhoeven, Spielberg, K-Smith, Tarantino, the Coen Bros., Michael Moore, David Fincher. Martin Brest used to be on this list, but has been expelled.

I agree with you on Coppola. But not Scorsese.

Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Goodfellas, The Last Temptation of Christ, Gangs of New York are all great movies.

I’m not a big Raging Bull fan (but I appreciate the creativity and choreography of the fight scenes) and his remake of Cape Fear is fun.

Even his movies I don’t like — Kundun, Bringing Out the Dead, The King of Comedy, The Color of Money — are filled with brilliant camera work and creative framing. I don’t think I’ve ever HATED one of his movies strictly because there’s sooo much going on in them.

Even Shutter Island, a predictable meh film, is filled with auteurism that few people living or dead can manage. He’s a damned genius.

Here's my take.

I want to be a Scorsese fan, but his stuff just doesn’t grab me. I wish it did, cuz I feel I’m missing out.

Taxi Driver was slow and boring. I fell asleep during Mean Streets and Casino. I thought Gangs of New York was awful, mostly due to the slow pacing and misplaced selling of Leo as a bad-ass (see above). Raging Bull was slow. King of Comedy – slow.

I like Goodfellas and The Aviator, but both have significant lulls. I truly do like his take on Cape Fear, but too rapey for me (see above). And The Color of Money is a great flick – you actually can relate to the characters in these flicks, as opposed to the others. I guess that’s my take.

I’d never watch New York, New York nor The Age of Innocence, cuz I’m straight.

Other than Peggy Sue Got Married and Tucker, I have no use for Coppola.

See, that's what I love about most

of Scorsese’s characters — especially his ‘70s stuff. It’s slow on purpose — his introspective, self-posessed, dangerous characters, to me, are gripping. Perhaps, and this is not saying anything good for myself, but I understand Scorsese’s fucked up characters.

His films are dripping with guilt and a Catholic conscientiousness that speak very clearly to me.

I agree with you about Leo and I am 100-percent on board with you when you typed this

I’d never watch New York, New York nor The Age of Innocence, cuz I’m straight.

Perhaps its because I have a feeling that my upbringing and my relation to other people are similar to Scorsese’s that I can trully feel engaged with his pictures.

A weird game...

13 hits in 8 innings….but he also struck out 10 and had us beat until Bruce closed his eyes and hit one out. The next time he faced us he beat us like rented mules.

How can I argue with that. We have an unstoppable offense….you win.

Well, they did score three runs, four runs, and one run.

Not horrible against great pitching, except that the pitching and defense didn’t make the games winnable with that kind of offensive production.

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

by Gray on Aug 11, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

But almost three runs per game against good pitching?

That’s not horrible. It’s just not going to make it possible to win anything when the opponents always score at least six runs.

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

by Gray on Aug 11, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree

i think its ridiculous how quick people are to jump on the offense. maybe reds fans are spoiled by how good it is and are frustrated when they dont score 10 runs every game

by justin007000 on Aug 11, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

See, this is my problem with not doing everything possible to get Cliff Lee or even oswalt

The Reds have a nice collection of number 3 starters; the Cards have 2 and a half aces. No one goes to the ‘yard and says "Oh no, I’m facing Arroyo tonight" or “Dear Lord, my night’s ruined because Mike Leake is on the hill.” Any and all Reds pitchers are capable of pitching well, but there’s a difference between “competent” and “ace.” This series highlighted that difference.

It also highlighted the importance of attacking rather than defending. Walking Pujols in the 5th? At best, Albert puts you down 2-0 with no one on and 2 outs. And, what is the chance of that? 10%? 20%? I just hate intentional walks in any inning before the 8th.

Oh, and one last thing, sMarty and Cowboy were absolutely convinced that Gomes should have caught Rasmus’s foul ball. Did anyone see it?

by timb116 on Aug 11, 2010 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya don't know how the sun affected it.

Only Gomes knows. He shoulda worn the sombrero.

Come on

We’ve pounded some pretty good pitchers this year. Off the top of my head, Gallardo and Hanson. This was a bad three-game series. That is all.

by ken on Aug 11, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Come on yourself Ken...

We have consistently sucked against good pitching this year — the level of sucking where you don’t ever feel that you are in the game. THAT kind of sucking. You would expect more from the “best offense in the NL” (statistically). I could go through the schedule, but it is hard to deny the truth of this.

by MoAb on Aug 11, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Now you tell me

Seriously, most teams struggle against great pitching. Our offense is pretty good. Maybe not the best in the NL, but in the conversation. You’re letting a bad half-week cloud your judgment.

total train wreck

but I still dont’ feel as bad as I did after the Philadelphia series. I guess I coped with disaster then and now I just have to apply the same procedure.

Worst part, the Cardinals fans will probably be really smug and self-righteous because of the fight. That is why I want someone to reveal what Carpenter said. It takes two to fight.

you're being polite with "tacky"

you’re right, though/ it’s stupid anytime, but after Wainwright shuts us down? I don’t wish any ill to Wainwright, Carpenter I can’t stand, but I’m not going to be happy for his ERA/ That is absurd.

but I don’t understand why you come over the Reds board after a nightmarish sweep and post…well…anything. I honestly wouldn’t even THINK of doing that. I don’t call my best friends for days after their teams lose a big game. I just kind of know better. Maybe its me.

by thevole on Aug 11, 2010 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

If the Giants lose tonight we are leading the Wild Card race.

There is that.

I went down today. Probably the worst game I’ve been to, between the rain, the heat, and shitty game.

I am glad the Reds are off tomorrow, and they even have a home off day. After this series they could all probably use a day off away from baseball. I know I do.

I put this series somewhere on par with opening day, in the grand scheme of things, it is only three games, but it just sucks. We have all been looking to this series for a long time, and to get swept just takes the wind right out of our sails. Hopefully the Reds will bounce back like they have been doing all year. Hopefully the Cubs can continue to beat St. Louis.

I’m not at the ledge, but the last 3 days have been tough.

I am thrilled for your success, hell I'm amazed by it. Nobody who knows you saw this coming.

by justin007000 on Aug 11, 2010 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

that series was terrible

one of the worst I’ve seen. It did confirm a couple o things, though. Moolina is in fact a little punk, Phillips runs his mouth too much and Votto is the best player we have. And that Carpenter is worse than Zambrano but no one cares.

Finally, some VEB postes are either out of it, or as provocative as they thnk we are,but we don’t banhammer—advantage RR!
