Farmers Only: Klink those glasses in celebration
- Louisville beat Indianapolis 6-1 behind a masterful outing by Matt Klinker. Klinker gave up only 1 hit and 2 walks in his 6 shutout innings, with 7 strikeouts on the evening. Jared Burton and Danny Ray Herrera were perfect from the bullpen, and Aroldis Chapman gave up the only run in the game in his 2/3 inning pitched. Daniel Dorn was 3-for-3, and Zack Cozart hit his 11th HR of the year. Ryan Hanigan is starting to come around on his rehab starts, with a 2-for-3 night with 2 RBI. Up next: Jesus Delgado gets the ball against Toledo at 7:05.
- Carolina lost 4-0 to West Tennessee, despite having 8 hits in the game. Daryl Thompson started and only went 1 2/3 innings, giving up 2 ER. We'll keep you posted, hopefully it isn't another serious injury. Amazingly, Brad Boxberger gave up another run in relief, keeping his streak of runs given up in every relief appearance in AA so far. Up next: Travis Webb takes on West Tenn at 8:05.
- Lynchburg lost 3-2 to Wilmington. Guess it had to happen sometime. Donnie Joseph gave up a run in the 9th after putting out a fire in the 8th to earn the loss. Lance Janke had a good outing, giving up only one unearned run in 7 innings. Kyle Day went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Up next: Curtis Partch takes on Wilmington at 7:05.
- Dayton pulled out a squeaker against Bowling Green 5-4. Jacob Johnson had another lackluster start, with 4 runs given up in 4 innings, but Blair Carson pitched 4 scoreless relief innings to keep the Dragons in it. Mark Fleury was 2-for-4 to lead the offense, and hit a 3-run bomb for his 6th HR of the year. Up next: Justin Walker gets BG at 8:05.
- Billings fell to Missoula 5-3. Daniel Corcino gave up 3 runs in 3 in the start, and Tzu-Kai Chiu had a good relief outing, going 5 innings and only giving up 1 unearned run. Up next: Starlin Gerson takes on Missoula at 9:05.
- The AZL Reds lost to the AZL Tribe 6-3. Carlos Contreras was lackluster in his start, but El'Hajj Muhammad pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings to keep them in it. On offense, Junior Arias was 2-for-5, and Sean Conner and Kurtis Muller each had an RBI. Up next: The AZL Giants are next at 10:05.

This is why Boxy should be starting (unless he's being polished for a trade, that is).

They are likely just limiting his innings, since he was a reliever in college

I just fear for the Sean Watson track.
then again, I fear for the Thomas Pauly track as well.

I wondered how long the Reds would leave Boxberger as a SP.
In college he was fine for five innings or so but consistently hit a wall and lost a lot of velocity after that. That had a lot of scouts figuring Boxberger was destined to be a reliever.

Good to see Chapman settling nicely into the pen
I’m so glad we stalled his development so he could be the shutdown reliever the Reds so clearly need right now

No one is saying he's ruined, but you have to admit
The mouth-breathing panic from a couple weeks ago that he was our only bullpen hope seems pointless and misguided

I don't have to admit that
The bullpen has stabilized, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t use more help and that Aroldis Chapman couldn’t provide that help.

Who would Chapman be an upgrade over at this point?

Masset?
Smith? Bray? Cordero?
I’m not going to get enamored with a couple of weeks of good play and say, “well, that’s all settled.”

Well, first of all, regarding CoCo, let's be realistic.
Secondly, you’d take the guy who can’t repeat his mechanics enough to consistently get AAA hitters out over guys who have, at times, been very effective in the bigs?
I agree it’s not all settled, but the idea that Chapman would be a significant upgrade over any of them is highly suspect.

Did I say "significant upgrade"?
I really don’t feel like having this argument, because I think we’re both set on what we think, but I’m confident that Chapman will play a significant role in the bullpen in the second half of the season.

Cozart, Alonso, Frazier, Francisco, and Dorn have all been on fire over their last ten games.
Nice to see after the offensive struggles the bats have had in the first half.
Hopefully El'Hajj can lead the Reds to World Series Mecca on his winged horse
in a few years.

Ha!
Mike Stanton’s home run last night lands in the catcher’s mitt….in the bullpen…on the ground. Be sure to watch the video.

ha. Very cool.
For whatever reason, I expected Mike Stanton to look a whole lot more like, well, Mike Stanton. That’s not weird of me, is it?

also:
MLB probably has the best mix of copyrighted content and availability of any of the leagues. Yeah, its tough to find anything on youtube…but I can click on the highlights of any Reds game, or see any highlights or goofy plays or whatever very easily. Baseball is quietly leading the way with their content —> MLBtv is way better than NFLtv, too.

I just wish they'd let you embed the videos
I don’t see a reason why that would be bad for them.
