Around SBN: 2011 In Extreme Home Runs

It seems that the Reds can actually beat the Braves this year! Reds win, 5-2.

Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Scott Rolen kind of had a good game: he went 2 for 3 with a double, a HR, and a walk.  Honorable mention goes to Bronson Arroyo, who pitched seven innings and gave up only 1 ER, scattering three walks and four hits.

Key Plays

  • The top of the first was kind of a mess.  One run scored on a throwing error, and another was walked in by Arroyo.  Braves up early, 2-0.
  • The Reds got one back in the fourth with a Rolen HR.
  • And then the Reds really got serious in the seventh inning.  Votto struck out to lead off the inning, but then Rolen doubled, advanced to third on a Gomes single, and scored on a Bruce single..  Drew Stubbs surprisingly struck out swinging, but then Ryan Hanigan doubled.  Two runs scored, and then Hanigan scored too on a throwing error.  Reds up, 5-2!
  • Arthur Rhodes and Nick Masset combined to pitch a one-hit eighth.  Francisco Cordero then allowed two hits but no runs in the ninth.  Reds win!

We need to be explicit in order to celebrate

Ryan Hannigan “Catcher” scored on an inside the park home run because the center fielder could not throw the baseball in anything close to a straight line. That was so fun that the other Braves outfielders (as well as the Reds outfielders) were laughing at him.

If you're not having fun, stop participating.

That throw

looked like the throw the Cincy mayor did

Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."

In fairness to our Mayor

the only thing he normally throws are looks around Hamburger Mary’s.

I really hope Volquez can get it together tomorrow, cause I really want a series win, especially since the Cards aren’t having too much trouble with this Pirates vintage

sorry gray, but it's obvious you didn't see the game today

hanigan definitely won that one, and you didn’t mention one of the worst throws in the history of the game. i just burst out laughing. and then millar started going on about how it was like throwing soap in the shower.

quick - who's better defensively - scott rolen or ryan zimmerman?

i never bothered to learn uzr and that kind of thing. but i do know zimmerman makes a lot of throwing errors errant throws that pull the first baseman off the bag that aren’t counted for errors…

Eye Witness Report

Awesome.

I sat behind the Braves dugout. Offended an old lady Braves fan with my salty language.

Sat next to a Braves fan in a Francour jersey, he was a pretty nice guy. He is from Philly but is a Braves fan, so weird.

Still don’t know why Dusty played knifey spoony in the the 8th with Rhodes and Masset, except so they could pitch on back to back days.

That bases clearing little league inside the park home run was one of the most awesome things ever.

Jurjens is a little bitch.

I am thrilled for your success, hell I'm amazed by it. Nobody who knows you saw this coming.

I must've been close to you

We were in section 120, near the top. I saw a woman, I think, in a Francour shirt. We were kind of surrounded by Braves fans. There was this obnoxious fan with a little nerf red hammer who would stand up and do that damn ‘chop’ every time a Brave got on base.

Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."

We were in some ridiculous seats behind home plate. I was standing and cheering before Hanigan’s hit, and the peach said “you realize you’re the only one standing, right?”. 20 seconds later I smiled and yelled, “I’m not the only one standing now, am I?!?!?!?” Good time. :)

In two weeks the Dodgers will realize that they have no shot

In order to save about 5MM they will expose Manny to waivers. Wouldn’t he look good providing protection for Votto? He can’t be much worse in the field than Gomes. Does this team have enough “good guys” that they can absorb him?

When you come to the fork in the road, take it.

Dusty quote:
"You always want better, but if you know me, I’ve never complained about who I have," said Baker. "You never heard me complain and say, ‘Give me this or give me that,’ because I always think I can do well with whatever I have. That’s part of the challenge of managing. So I challenge myself to try to get the most out of who I have.

Stubbs

Aren’t we getting to the point in the season where Dusty/Walt has to say to Stubbs, “Sorry kid, it’s not working right now. Time to take a seat / spend some time at AAA.”?

It’s getting to the stretch drive – we can’t have him completely lost at the plate with the season on the brink. He may be great one day, but I hate having him learn on the job.

It's summertime - go Reds!

by NYCCats on Jul 31, 2010 11:57 PM EDT reply actions

i'd send him out when Dickerson is back

Let Heisey play almost every day in left field, and give Dickerson a chance to play a platoon with Jonny Gomes.

Of course if Dickerson still hits like he did in April, I’d pull the plug on it shortly, but then again he was an awful hitter in April of 2009, and hit much better the rest of the way.

I am thrilled for your success, hell I'm amazed by it. Nobody who knows you saw this coming.

Darnell McDonald played pretty well for the Sox yesterday

2 for 4 with a double. And a lead off single in the bottom of the 9th, setting up Big Papi for the walkoff 3-RBI double.

I can’t believe he’s been on their roster almost the entire season.
