Trade Deadline Open Thread
We are 8 hours and counting down to the non-waiver trade deadline. Use this thread to exult/decry any moves the Reds make or do not make. The Reds have been quiet - a little too quiet - so far this deadline, as they have only been cursorily linked to Ted Lilly, Scott Downs, and new Phillie Roy Oswalt. Could Coco's shaky performance last night convince Walt to pick up another late-inning reliever? We'll keep you abreast of any developments as they unfold.

maybe Bruce's shaky 9th inning at bat
Makes him expendable also. Heisey’s catch was reminiscent of Glenn Braggs, he should play more RF

it's a no brainer that he should platoon each of the OF positions one per week
that would give gomes, bruce, and stubbs a day off and give us a shot to see what Hi-Z can really do three times per week

Heisey is still an unknown commodity, and we should figure out his best OF position and respective value

Really going out on a limb here....
Reds do nothing, only make playoffs if they find some way to actually beat the Cards for the division, since whoever finishes 2nd in the NL Central won’t win the Wild Card.
i am starting to think doing nothing is the right move
this team in itself is going to get better, and there are still some nice prospects in the minors. This season, even if the Reds win 87 games and miss the playoffs would be a huge step forward.
I was all up in arms about Cliff Lee a few weeks ago, but I have realized I really don’t want to go for the 2008 Brewers.

Well said. We are set to make a run at this the next few years.
While we are on the upswing, the Cards are getting older and way too expensive, the Brewers are rebuilding, the Cubs need to blow the whole thing up and start over, and the Bucs and ’Stros are dumpster fires.
Walt needs to keep doing what he is doing and not mortgage the future for a two month rental reliever.
Watch it, ass blood.

by the way, what the fuck are the buccos doing?
trading for an expensive catcher, while sending over the hill AAAA superstars Crosby and Church to the d-bags? Don’t they already have, like, 3 average catchers?
This just makes me think of the Matt Morriss mid-season acquisition they made a few years ago…god that was hilarious.

Doumit is hurt and only a catcher in name.
Their other catchers are Jason Jaramillo, who sucks, and their non-badass Corky equivalent. Snyder’s an upgrade for the future and the D’Backs are paying for most of it.
yeah, the $$ part was what I was wondering about
that makes more sense.

Don't forget Kratz
He had a big game defensively last night, throwing out 3 baserunners. He was their star last night besides Karstens. So it’s weird timing that they’d turn around and make this deal. But who really cares.
by Brian B on Jul 31, 2010 1:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
i dunno
they really didnt give up anything and they got a good above-average catcher (with injury concerns). all they had to do was take on the money, and they have plenty of it. good on them.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jul 31, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, they gave up total crap for an above average catcher
this is a good move for the Pirates. Doumit is probably the worst defensive catcher in baseball, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade him. Or they could turn around and trade Snyder for twice as much as they payed. Or they could keep both and play Doumit at 1B or something. They can’t lose on this deal.
Agreed...
Lets keep what we have. Sure if we can get bullpen help without giving up A level prospects then sure.
Look at the young starters we have: Volquez, Cueto, Leake, Wood, Chapman, Bailey. That is a very dangerous group. Cueto should win over 15 games this year and will only get better. Volquez should return to his former self next year (if not better). Leake should win atleast 10+ games next year in a full season. There is no reason to think Wood doesn’t have the same potential. We know Chapman and Bailey have enough talent.
We have enough young pitching to go on a run an win the Central for the next few years. I’m not ready to give up this year. Chapman coming to a pen that has been looking better and better, outside of Cordero. It will be a close race to the end. With our schedule we will atleast ‘hang around’. It may come down to how we play heads up against the Cards! What more could you ask for this year? Especially when you have put together the young talent to compete for the next 5+ years!
Yeah, making the playoffs is so over-rated
That’s the wrong thinking, Justin. You win when you can, because you have no way of knowing if you’re coming back. Ask the 1999 Reds if adding Griffey was gonna guarantee them playoffs in the future. The 1990 Reds did basically nothing in the off-season and— shockingly — they suffered injuries. The rise of the Braves, keyed by a key off-season acquisition after they had already won is another example.
You just don’t miss a chance to make the club better because you plan on being better next year. You make yourself better.
Then again, there’s a balancing act, because you can’t give away the farm for nothing.
Personally, I remember the 2006 Cards as much as you remember the 2008 Brewers
I think we're more worried about that balancing act
I’m not sure we have what it takes to necessarily win in the playoffs as far as starting pitching, at least on paper- (granted, as we’ve discussed, the playoffs can turn into a total crapshoot), but I think we’re worried that the price to improve ourselves a little bit this year might be steep enough that it could seriously hurt our chances at competing next year. I think we’re also looking at most of our late-season improvements coming from within the organization.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
if the Reds could have added Cliff Lee at the right price, i'd be all over it
but if it would have bankrupted the farm, then no.
The 1999 team was a fun fluke. Many of the big time contributors this year (outside of CMM and Rolen) are young talented players who will probably get better.
Chapman is going to become a star. He can be that ace of the staff, with a nice rotation around him with guys like Leake, Wood, Cueto, Volquez, etc around him.
The bullpen with a core of Masset, Ondrusek, and Smith will get better.
Plus some nice position players to boot.

You don't KNOW those things, justin
You think they are true because experience tells you they are true. See the Kearns discussion below.
You especially don’t know this “Chapman is going to become a star.” Whereas I hope you’re right and think that may be true, not doing something because what you imagine a 19 year old might do is…..not a recipe for success
Still, I think that if the Reds stand pat, it’s because Walt thinks the same way you do, justin, and I trust him more than I do you (no offense meant) to make that determination
Justin can actually see into the future...

we had pieces in the minors leagues that we easily could have traded that doesn't disrupt our future plans
as the deadline loomed, I realized we weren’t making a big impact deal, but we had smaller guys that we could have moved for better bench depth, and better bullpen depth, and some emergency depth chart depth to stash in AAA. All moves that wouldn’t have turned this organization over on its side.

traded for?
I would have gotten David DeJesus end of June, or when the Royals came to GABP in June I would have made sure he stayed in town after the Royals left. Drew Stubbs would have left town with the Royals, and whatever else it took not named Alonso, or Frazier.
I would have actually SENT the Twins some bullpen help for that catching prospect they sent to the Nationals. Matt Capps? How about we send them CoCo the Coronary, and pay some of his salary, and get a legit catching prospect?
I would have sent the Cubs some of our minor league chaff for Ted Lilly. It didn’t seem like the Dodgers gave up much at all.
Octavio Dotel wouldn’t have cost us much.
Sure, this is all revisionist history, but some of these guys could easily have been had, and for not much. It just pisses me off that we made no moves at all….

Give me Willingham, Bautista (for the right price) or Drew!
Or give me… nothing? No, no, I want one of those 3.
Willingham LF
CF CDICK/Heisey.
Lineup: Phillips/ Heisey or CDICK / Votto / Willingham / Rolen / Hernandez / Bruce / OCAB
Damn good lineup down the stretch. Gomes needs to not play anymore he parlayed one hot month in May into unlimited sub replacement level starts. Stubbs really worries me. A change in the OF could do wonders for the offense.
I have no idea want Washington would need. maybe Maloney, Frazier or Valaika and Klinger.
Dickerson is definitely not terrible
he has played plus CF with wOBA 353 for his 454 PA- which is the exact opposite of terrible its actually pretty awesome.
He was obviously hurt to start this year- he is driving the ball right now and definitely deserves starts with the Reds.
Gomes is terrible. Stubbs has been not very good. Bruce you just have to stick with and pray he turns it around.
Saw him a couple days ago and it looked like he had a hang nail.
Could set him back a week or 10.

It rained at the Bats game last night
A few stray drops hit C-Dick, he’s gonna be out for a few weeks with deep bone bruising.
it will destroy stubbs's confidence!
he’ll be useless when he inevitably has to replace dickerson after a game or two
Maloney with Francisco?
They need to bench Stubbs and Gomes. They’re killing this team. Drop Bruce to 7th. Bruce either remembers how to hit or he sits too. After that, if there’s still no place for Heisey out there, then they need to fire Dusty.
None of the three starting outfielders really deserves any quarter right now.
Phone's ringing, Dude.
Heisey not getting playing time
is a fireable offense. Dusty is also determined to start OCAB every game until he breaks down again.
You would think Dusty would have noticed how much better OCAB played after the all-star break and understand he needs some time off during the season.
AGREED
That is something I made a note of. It was obvious. Janish would provide better range and you won’t lose much, if anything at the plate, for a couple days a week.

What's scary is that Kearns may have been a better all-around hitter than Bruce as a prospect
However, I really think Kearns was derailed by the neck injury from slamming into the wall, followed by the shoulder injury from Ray King’s Fat Ass, and then the broken wrist from the bean ball. (I think that was the order) Hopefully Bruce will have a little more good luck.
