2010 Game 103 Thread: Reds at Brewers
Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 28, 2010 2:10 PM EDT

|
This game of baseball continues to perplex me. The Reds face Randy Wolf on Monday and get shut down. They face Yovani Gallardo on Tuesday and erupt for 12 runs. I have no idea what will happen today. None.
I just traded for Travis Wood in one of my fantasy leagues (for Matt Wieters, if you must know), so I apologize if he falls apart now. It's totally my fault. The funny thing about Wood is that the Reds are just 3-2 in his starts, but in the two losses, he had given up just 1 run over 15 innings. Perhaps if he could just learn how to be a winner, he'd be a pretty good pitcher. I mean, look at Chris Narveson. He's 8-6. Winner.
Scott Rolen is supposedly riding the pine today. I'm a little confused by this since Rolen didn't play the last three innings last night and the Reds are off tomorrow, but whatever. Hopefully it's not a wholesale bench game like Dusty tends to do on getaway days.
Gotta win today and confirm for the Brewers that they should be sellers (just not to the Cardinals). Go Reds!

Rolen should be playing unless he is injured
he hasn’t seen much game time at all recently and we need to win. Tomorrow is an off day—it’s not as though he is playing another day game tomorrow.

Seriously silly statements!
Superlative support for success-seeking servicemen in stirrups should survive slender success! See, Stubby should and shall sustain some sideline suffering for strikeout supremacy, but salient sabermatricians of Cincinnati (and surrounding suburban sprawl) should stand strong in saying, "Stubbs, success shall come swiftly sans sidelines. Stay solid, streamline some skills, and soon your success in center shall suffice.
Just learn to frickin’ bunt, already.

hope that wasn't a keeper league!
Who’s feeling a Cairo salami today? Anyone? No? OK fine, but a win would be great.
It is a keeper league
But I have Busted Posey too and I needed some pitching. Funny thing is that Wieters and Matusz were both keepers this off-season, but I had to trade Wieters and dump Matusz in the deal. Stupid Orioles.

All kinds. From left-wing crazies to right-wing lunatics.
Name an issue/situation/social injustice/etc. I’ve been stopped by one.
In Cincinnati, Columbus, rural Ohio, Chicago, DC, rural Illinois. Anywhere and everywhere I’ve lived.
I’m tired of them. First it war protests, now its tea partiers. In between I’ve seen everything from pro life to pro choice, labor rights and gun rights.
I’ve never seen any hard statistical facts to prove that they actually work. If someone is that upset about something — make sure you vote. The people in power can and will tune you out.
Don’t get me wrong, everyone has the right to protest and that’s great. But here’s my question? Why are these things always held during the week? Don’t these people have jobs? It’s like they’re all Cubs fans.

You think Walt is going to not make a move? Seems pretty obvious they need a bat.
yeah...
this offense perplexes me. leads the league in many offensive categories, yet there’s an obvious need for a bat. hopefully it doesn’t mean we’re due for regression
I think waiver moves are more likely
to get those “bat off the bench” types. The only trades worth making are for an ace SP, and there’s just nobody around anymore who makes sense.
That said, I bet there’s at least one pitcher making a start in August that isn’t in a Reds uniform yet.

Given that so many teams are within spittin’ distance currently, there just aren’t that many sellers making players available. No need to overspend for mediocrity now since oure schedule’s relatively light enough to buy us more time to shop.

I'm really curious as to what will happen when Dickerson's rehab is up.
I wonder who among Laynce Nix, Chris Heisey, or maybe even Drew Stubbs gets sent down or DFA’d. With Stubbs’ current struggles, it might not be too far-fetched to see him heading to Louisville for a short stint to work on his swing and bunting skills, with either Heisey starting for a while with Dickerson as his backup, or a straight Heisey/Dickerson platoon.

If the other team is saving their bullpen by pulling this maneuver, you have to punish them offensively for it.
You have to embarrass them, and try to get them to bring in one more arm to weaken their pen more for today’s match-up. Letting him pitch a perfect inning on 6 pitches is horseshit.

It’s part of THE CODE that you don’t work a count or swing from the heels. But against a position player, all bets are off. Just look at Janish’s career ERA to see how team usually handle this situation.

King Strasburg has "shoulder discomfort"
Sure everyone heard he didn’t make his start last night. Here is the latest from ESPN re: why….“shoulder discomfort.” No structural damage found yet.
As much as the hype has been over the top and annoying, I hope this isn’t anything serious. He is good for baseball…and I love me some baseball. That said, it does make you wonder whether ANY young pitcher is immune from shoulder/elbow issues — no matter what they say about his “perfect mechanics” etc.
Mark Prior'd as well.
Another “can’t miss” pitcher with allegedly “perfect” mechanics. Time to start throwing underhand. Speaking of throwing underhand, I never saw them, but my Dad used to tell great stories about the King and His Court — at least I think that was the name of the team. Like 4 guys (pitcher, catcher, 1b and CF?) who would take on teams. Guy would pitch from like 2b and strike everyone out. My Dad tends to exaggerate, but I have heard others talk about these guys. You guys know of them?
So... does this mean he's NOT a robot?
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
I agree with that
Strasburg is not on my team, but it would be tragic for someone so promising to have a serious injury before his first couple of months in teh nmajors are over. I don’t think it is anything too terible, I think they are being very cautious with him, but it is still disconcerting. Maybe souldrummer knows more.
Probably not anything...just scary.
This story just gets so old….same thing over and over….and they always seem to start wtih “discomfort”. Here’s to hoping it is nothing more than that.

Reading this, I can’t blame him for leaving, especially when 4 people rec’d Geki. It wasn’t an isolated incident.
I think what people were reacting to was that John tended to be contrarian, and yet when people dissented – politely – he would accuse them of arguing with him just because they didn’t like him. It was the strangest thing. To me, it looked like he was projecting – accusing others of doing what he was doing.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
This is true
He would state at the beginning that he would not be convinced of a viewpoint different than his own, but expect others to cede to his, it seems.
He got a lot of unjustified vitriol though. The other “contrarian” argument I remember was the whole tazer thing, and I personally have to say he was never out of line that time, but managed to cause quite a stir anyway.

This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the losing.
Whew
Also to be fair, many people actually don’t know how to argue. john is actually a pretty smart guy, but it also seemed that every opinion he had was the opposite of the concensus here, and the community didn’t respond well to that at all.
There was blame to go both ways. As someone mentioned, this site isn’t for everybody.
John would be hardly the only person here who does disagrees with many of us on a host of topics.
I know we do tend to pile on – but again, that’s happened to a lot of folks. I respected him for being so willing to put an opposing viewpoint out there, but I could never understand his reactions to reasonable counterarguments.

maybe
but he knowingly came into a hornet’s nest at one of the worst possible times and basically said that everyone was being a homer. To me, it was just so irritating because he wasn’t pointing out anything novel (Manuel can do this if he wants, Phillies fans like Howard), he just wanted to play devil’s advocate, as usual. That can be a really grating position to take when you take it all the time.
Looking back, a few of those comments were harsh and unnecessary. But there’s nothing particularly elucidating about what he said, and the national media shared our outrage after the whole thing. If he would have offered some real food for thought other than “If you were a Phillies fan you’d like it!” then we could have had a friendly debate. But all he wanted to do was play Barry Contrary.

This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the losing.

he always complained about how he couldn't get Reds games in Indiana
that reminded me of it. But, um, that was about it.

He has great range in CF...
but he still can’t hit a lick. The glove is sick though. Don’t know if the defensive metrics show it…but I watched him enough (granted on TV only) and he has some great range.

When is the last time we hit well against a LHP?
Santana kicked our butts. Wolf was very good. Narveson is pitching well beyond his alleged ability. Wandy Rodriguez beat the crap out of us. This is a disturbing trend.
I don't think it's a lefty issue
Just a slump. On the season we hit lefties about as well as righties (760 to 780 OPS).
