Bringing coal to Strasmas - calling all DC Reds fans

Yep, it's time for another and bigger Reds get together at Momo's on U Street.  It's 1300 something - I could look up the address since at this point in time I can't remember it exactly, but there's google.  And you can always email me if you're lost.

Stephen Strasburg is going to be a heck of a pitcher - he already is.  But the insanity surrounding him in DC is, well, insane.  There is no perspective.

I've invited a few Nationals fans, too, just to make it more fun when we win and Joey MVP Votto hits a Strasburg fastball into Kentucky.

So, if you're in DC on Wednesday, July whatever this Wednesday is, you better show up with Reds gear on to root, root, root for the Redlegs and put these Nationals folks who think Stephen Strasburg is Jesus in their place.  (No, seriously, it is an irrational circus.)

Well, well, well.

I shall check my schedule and see what the future holds. Our MO lately, has been to score for Strasburg and nobody else after scoring for everyone else but Strasburg.

What is this “insanity” of which you speak? Nats have had nothing to speak of worth mentioning for 5 years. It’s an event town. He delivered on the event after a pile of ‘Skins suck, Wizards suck, Caps playoff disappoinment, and Hoyas playoff flameout. It ain’t been the best of times in DC.

Meanwhile, I would remind you that y’all paid a truck of money for Chapman, who while an excellent prospect, is currently in AAA looking for the lost ball in tall weeds which is the strike zone. Once upon a time this story was Strasburg and Chapman. Strasburg has delivered; Chapman is in the process of delivering and hopefully will be up in the bullpen closing instead of CoCo in meaningful games against the hated Cardinals.

Leake has been great. Wood has been great. More substance for bigger stakes than Strasburg. But Stras has style and substance in the face of the pressure. Reds will probably beat the Nats because well, that’s what we do.

“There is no perspective” requires a little more defense than that.

Strasburg has delivered what?

one game a week worth watching? Ok, I’ll give you that. But there is too much talk of a .500 record this year and playoff contention for next year, and that All Star stuff was ridiculous. Many people felt Strasburg was snubbed though he’d had only four Major League starts. The post-game press conferences after meaningless games are over the top.

I wrote about this earlier. (Admittedly I’m a my-team-was-the-first-professional-baseball-team snob.)

Re: Chapman. Difference is we all knew Chapman wouldn’t make an impact this year, although we always had hope that we’d be wrong.

And remember – I go to 15 or 20 Nats games a year, so I’m not ignorant about the team (this year I was out of the country for the first two months so I haven’t been to as many as usual.) I’ve also been watching the games every night on MASN (with the sound turned down since I’m watching the Reds at the same time.) Dunn is going to be tough to replace. One guy who only plays every five days is not going to save this team.

I don’t know why it annoys me so much. I should be happy people are interested in baseball. On some level, I am. I guess I’ve never been a fan of bandwagons.

So are you coming on Wednesday?

I’m trying to figure out where the official Watch Party during this road trip is. Much as I can’t stand the Nat Pack in large doses, I did win free tickets at the last one and souldrummer likes free almost as much as Rickey likes Rickey.

Re: Postgame press conferences…Not everybody in DC wants that. That’s national media.

Re: The all-star game…I was supportive of him for the all-star game as a potential fan vote selection until he was less than dominant in his last two starts against the Braves and Mets. I do know that I would rather see Strasburg pitch than see Matt Capps pitch. Happy how that worked out, though, and I’m glad I was pleasantly surprised. Now I hope the Reds trade for Matt Capps as they get Cocoed out.

Strasburg has delivered as much certainty as possible that they will have a legitimate ace in their rotation next year. For a team that has never had a reliable ace in its entire 5 year history, that is big, big news. For 16 days or so this season, the Nationals have a story and a player that legitimately competes with the 10,000 pound gorilla known as the Washington Redskins. Just like Ovechkin made the Caps relevant enough that fans could contemplate buying season tickets to fully appreciate Laich, Backstrom, and Green, Strasburg’s sizzle can help Nats fans appreciate the other positive players they have on the team and offer a window of opportunity for a starting pitching staff that is at least competent.

The .500 record stuff and playoff contention does embarass me because the Nats farm system, drafting, and international signings are not that of a team that can contend in the immediate future. They need to hold off on that kind of talk until they sign Harper and see how he fares in his first minor league campaign.

I guess why I responded at too much length is that I always get frustrated when people assault bandwagon DC baseball fans. Yeah, it’s frustrating when they come into Federal Baseball and decide to immediately put up a Fanpost bashing Ian Desmond without a real clue as to the strategic reasons why we tolerate his errors. But when you are 5 years old, there’s not much more than the bandwagon. We have to accept that bandwagon, nurture that bandwagon, and help grow that infant bandwagon into the type of true fans that are the backbone of mature fanbases like the Reds.

Against my better judgment.

I plan to come tonight. I’m hoping that you guys are Reds fans with class and I’ll get an opportunity to see what Natstown can become with a playoff contender. 90% on making it with you guys instead of Clint and his Natpack. Should I come, I’ll be in Natstown grey, Potomac Nationals hat and backpack, probably between 6:00 and 6:30. If you guys aren’t there, I’ll probably be the lone guy at the bar or table reading a copy of Roger Angell’s “The Summer Game” or “Five Seasons”. Looking forward to meeting you and I hope you get the throngs of Reds fans you desire and a few Nats fans as well.

Clint

What a dillhole. Although I like Kenny on the Nats Fun Crew or whatever it is.

I tolerate him now...

…but those guys have zero baseball knowledge. I saw Torrence from the Nat pack trying to start a wave while one of our guys was pitching (I think) at a recent game. [Facepalm]

Harper is the answer!

Best battery in baseball!

In all seriousness, will the Nats actually sign Bryce Harper? And if they do, will they have 30+ MM tied up in him and SS?

They will

He won’t be as good as Strasburg is

Nats will sign Harper.

But they will move him to RF because they don’t want to see him spend 3 years in the minors with all of the hype and the potential that he might leave for a bigger market after his deal. The issues on signing may be less money this time around than whether he’ll get a major league deal or a minor league deal. I’m not savvy enough to know all the ins and outs of what it will take, but I believe Boras and the Lerners are savvy enough to sign at the last minute.

FWIW

Nyjer Morgan is the one who deemed Strasburg “Jeezus”. Local media latched on and some of the bandwagoneers jumped on with that.

Nyjer Morgan also believes he is worthy of a starting CF job in the major leagues with his level of nonproduction and that the way to get out of his slump is to thaw “Dr. Freeze” off of his bat. I root for him, but he hasn’t been the sharpest tack in the box to this point.

As always, I root for the Reds in the NL Central when it’s not against the Nats, respect your accomplisments to date, and hope our front office is watching carefully as your international players like Volquez and probably Chapman are a key component to your stretch drive playoff push.

Just bought my tickets for the US Open Cup quarterfinals

I’m out for this event! Any time you can see All-Star Jaime Moreno take on the Harrisburg City Islanders in Boyds, MD, well, you’ve gotta go!

You are truly a fan of United...

…if you’re going to that one. United is godawful this year. I turned on the last few minutes of that snoozer last week where they gave up in the goal in the last couple minutes of regulation. Awful, awful, awful.

Yes, but that was a league match

Their regular season is pretty much toast. But the game I’m going to (although I was at that one Thursday, and the one on Sunday as well) is for the US Open Cup Tournament! We’ve reached the finals of the last two, and if we win this one, then we’ll have rolled our way into the semis. Dios mio! So we’re doing all right in those games, it’s against a second division team, and after all, we win on Wednesday.

…best wishes and you’ll be missed.
