A Possible Solution to Our Bullpen Woes
So the talk around Reds country lately has been the need to find a good, dependable right handed hurler for our bullpen. The player I've come up with is a leader, has plenty of big league experience, has a history with the team, has playoff experience, and is easily available. May I present to you, David Weathers. He has said that he is willing to come to a team half way through the season, and I'm sure the price tag would be low. So what say you Reds fans? Do you take a shot? I say, why not? If this bullpen continues to struggle or get injured, Weathers may just be the spark plug needed to get us to the finish.

Jared Burton is a good pitcher when healthy
I don’t think this team has bullpen woes so much as it’s waiting for the cavalry. If Masset is still floundering at the deadline, or Burton and del Rosario haven’t shored up spots – and Volquez isn’t going to be tried in the bullpen – then they should look trade.
Yeah, those guys and the Cincinnati Reds. They're a terrible football team. / Because they're a baseball team? / Exactly. You know who's the worst football team? The Philadelphia Flyers. - Best Show

The Diamondbacks reportedly are close to
restructuring their roster, possibly going into full firesale mode for salary relief. Aaron Heilman and Carlos Rosa could be inviting targets, although I suspect they’d give away Chad Qualls if they could find a taker. With Bryan Price being very familiar with that crew, might a trade with Arizona be a possibility?

do you think there's any chance
they give up Stephen Drew?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Possibly, but I'd be surprised.
Drew is one of the few players performing well and his contract isn’t particularly burdensome. They’d move a bunch of other guys, though. LaRoche and Haren, I hear, top the list.

I don't know. Kendrick's tone in that indicates anyone who's getting more expensive could go
I agree that Drew is relatively cheap, but he’s getting more expensive by the year and could bring back better prospects than most guys on the roster.
But then, there’s the problem. He’ll be really expensive in prospects.

How about
Micah Owings, Wilkin Castillo, and Dallas Buck? Seems fair to me.

I'd rather had Roxannie Qualls
I bet she’s got a mean slider. And she already owns a batting helmet.

I agree that the pen has been a problem
But I’m not sure it’s worth doing anything drastic about it.
Relief pitching is such a crapshoot. More than any other position, relief pitchers are subject to factors beyond their control (luck and defense).
We’d probably be better off upgrading at SS, or at least having Dusty use LIDRs more.

is giving Weathers a $500K non-guaranteed contract (based on his minor league performance) distract?
"Every day we expect to win and here lately we've been doing that."-Homer Bailey
Yes.
Lets go back in time for the hey of it and bring up Travis Wood to cut his teeth in the pen or Move Harang in there when Bailey gets back…
Micah Owings is a good example of a guy who was not hacking it as a starter and now he’s doing OK…
We got more pitchers that can used than we’ve had in years.
When he’s ready put Voltron in for a while. let him build his stamina up that way.
My name is Madville and I'm a JonnyGomesLaynceNixaddict.
Michah Owings is not doing okay
Coming into today’s game he has a BB/9 of 5.4. That went up with his 8,000 walks he issues today. His ERA is alright at 3.89 coming into play today, and it dropped despite his piss poor performance. Owings Xfip is a more reasonable 5.18. Owings is going to allow a big inning soon, you can’t walk as many batters as Owings is walking and not get seriously burned by a big inning at some point.
Maybe Owings command would be better if he were used more regularly, but than Dusty should have absolutely no confidence in Owings to pitch in close late games, as Owings has done nothing to earn it. Owings should only pitch in blow outs, extra innings, when the rest of the bullpen is extremely overworked, or when the starter makes an early exit. Does anybody honestly thing that if used regularly Owings would be any better than Orunsderk, Lincoln, or Fisher?
and *drastic, i have no idea how/why I wrote the word “district”.

Owings was also one Bernadina nonheroic play away from being the hero last night.
His ability to save pinch hitters in the middle innings could be slightly valuable. There are more knowledgable people than me on that around here who’ve absorbed him more.
Owings kind of reminds me of the Nats Craig Stammen a little bit. Everybody thinks he should be able to start. But he really can’t start. So let’s him put in the bullpen eventually (many Nats fans think this) but his bat is really plus for a relief pitcher.
Souldrummer stands alone for Miguel Batista. Many want to see Capps save games. Dream big! MOAR RUNZ!!! MOAR BATISTA!!!!
Also Mads, I think you unfairly rate Harang compared to the others in the rotation
but the arguing about Harang has gone on for like 3 years now, who really knows what to think…
I think Harang still has 'it'
but he doesn’t have ‘it’ for more than a couple of 3 innings before he peters out. ( I don’t mean to get all ’sabremetric on you Soren)

not a bad idea at all
"I don't challenge Murphy, even if he's 0 for 20. Not him, not ever." - Mario Soto
except Chapman 2010=Bailey 2007:
Chapman numbers so far are 10..3K/9IP and 4.8BB/9IP 5.22 IP/start.
Bailey’s 2007 AAA stats were 7.89 K/9IP and 4.28 BB/9IP 5.60888 IP/start.
Chapman’s K rate is much better than Bailey’s was, but his BB rate is a bit worse. Either way walking every other batter isn’t going to get it done at the big leagues. Chapman is going to be great, but his time has yet to come.
