Reds signing Gary Matthews Jr. to a minor league deal

According to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports, the Reds signed outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. to a minor league deal. He posted Taveras/Patterson numbers for the Mets to begin the year, before getting released.

Should we be reading anything into this? It doesn't seem like the Reds are in urgent need of an outfielder at the moment, so maybe this is an insurance move as someone they can keep at AAA until they need him off the bench? What do we think, guys?

or as Mads posted in another thread, a move that helps us move Heisey or Stubbs for a piece that’ll help us make the playoffs

isnt infielder Chris Burke playing CF for the Bats?

looks to me like they just need someone to play the OF in AAA.

that being said, i understand Brendanukkah is looking for a job and im almost certain he could play CF for the Bats better than lil’ Sarge.

This is just roster filler, a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency move.

I'm pretty sure GMJ made a lot of money simply because of this play

I’m not upset about this signing. I’d be upset if he was signed and brought to the big leagues to play CF everyday. I’ll be upset if this is the only move the Reds make all summer. Otherwise, meh.
