BURGER TOUR ROARS AGAIN - when and where?!?
There are several new, or new to me, contenders for the burger title in the greater cincinnati area. I'm looking at working a great deal more in the upcoming 4-6 weeks so it may take even more preplanning to execute a burger tour stop. That said, I'm free the next two sunday evenings after 5pm...and one of those nights would be so choice for a great burger. The nominees:
The Pelicans Reef - they have three menus. Regular, Summer Only and Weekly Specials. Its very, very, very hard to decide what to get. For fathers day I had King Crab Legs, Grouper filet, Scallops, Red Snapper, Swordfish, Lobster Gumbo and Conch Chowder. (I did share many of these orders with the table. Best Seafood in Cincy, folks.) It was then that i noticed their summer special burgers. 33% brisket, 33% prime and 33% something i've already forgotten. CHICKEN POT PIE, I'm in!!!
The Wildflower Cafe - Home of the Best Burger nominee on pretzel bread. In Mason, which is a major bummer for those of us in KY. I love this font!!!
Flipdaddy's - in Mariemont. Most of the online reviews weren't too kind. Poop, i was hoping this place would be a player in the burger tour. Not near the top of the list, I'm afraid.
Sammy's Gourmet Burgers - Sharonville location is a bummer. HLM is intrigued by this place and we have to get him a tour review by the end of the summer.
I'm thinking Pelican's Reef, near the Beechmont Mall this Sunday or next Sunday. The burger is the most enticing and it has time is of the essence status since its a summer special only.

the other 33% is short rib, if your text to me is to be believed
You forgot Blind Moose by the way. Stuffed Burgers!

I'd try Flipdaddy's
Just because it is close to me.. :)
Sammy’s is good, but don’t expect a certain temperature even if they bother to ask. Get the burger with the chorizo, that one is very tasty, although the burger is a secondary taste and just adds substance. The chorizo is overpowering, but VERY VERY good..
Education is what you get from reading the directions. Experience is what you get from not reading them.
am I one of the only people who doesn't like Moerlein?
While I appreciate the simplicity of Quatman’s, their burger just tastes awful. No flavor, no juicyness, and it seems every time I’ve been they’ve had stale buns.
They have good mock turtle soup, however.

i hate Moerlein
i wanted to like it, but it was ick. when did it get so expensive to boot?
i dont like PBR either.
"then skip it"....
'tis true, I do not like hoppy beer
I do appreciate Flying Dog’s packaging which gives me an idea of the hoppiness of the beer. Really helped me educate my palate.

I think it became expensive once they took over that brewery in Cincinnati
and they then had to price their beer accordingly to make up for their expenses of taking over that brewery

Their retarded
another nice thing about quatmans is that two people can have a pitchers of beer, 2 cans of beer, and 2 burgers and fries and ITS ONLY $25!!!!
That’d be $10 at Opening Day. Rookies.

They don't have pitchers at OD
But I can guarantee that an equivalent meal wouldn’t cost more than $10 there

I find it hysterical that you guys have somehow built up Quatman's to be the single worst eating establishment on Earth

them's fightin' words
you want a bad burger? go to cadillac ranch. that’s a damn awful burger.
worst chain burger? white castle, hands down
If you keep egging me on, next time I’m in town we are so going to MAB&G, and we’ll settle worst burger, Quatman’s vs MAB&G.

white castle is great...if you like eating food that tastes like shit and has the consistency of food that's already been chewed

Somehow?
Quatman’s did it on its own. Don’t act surprised.

Whose idea was Squatman's anyway?
And who the hell is going to go out for burgers on Sunday night?

BBQ Fail
I guess 2011 is the Year of the BBQ Tour
Sammy’s is in Blue Ash, btw. Creek & Kenwood Rd, across from Bally’s (anyone else find this amusing?) Calling Blue Ash Sharonville is an insult to Blue Ash!
The 2 people I know who’ve been to Flip Daddy’s were split. 1 loved it, and mentioned it favorably in the same sentence as TTC’s, and the other said “If you’re going to Mariemont, just go to Dilly Deli, and don’t waste your time with this dump”.
I think you definitely need to give jch’s Blind Moose some love. The stuffed burger might end up being its own category, however.
And where the Hell is Pelican’s Reef, and how long’s it been there?
its 1/4 mile west of the Beechmont Mall
been there for 15 years? warning: it has a nautical motif (which doesnt bother me at all)

in all fairness, jch picked Gordo's for the burger retribution
so, as long as he keeps making those decisions, he’s ok in my book
by Highlifeman21 on Jun 21, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions
well, I was hemming and hawing between TTC, Zip's, Gordo's and MAB&G (the scene of the crime!)
and Gordo’s proximity to his new pad probably influenced his influence on my decision

I submit this 10 oz burger for consideration on The Tour
Oh look, a menu! If you’re hungry, get the Needmore Double Cheeseburger. If you’re jch, and you need a burger challenge, they have one!
(Your Name Here) 2 LB Burger Challenge
A full two pounds of beef stacked and topped with all the fixings, and American cheese. This is served with 1 LB of French fries and includes a soft drink. You must eat everything without leaving the table. Break the previous record holder’s time, and it’s on us. After 6 months, we will rename the burger after the current record holder
I know I had to redeem myself after MAB&G, but I stand by this burger. I consider it a hidden gem in Cincinnati.
there you Jeremy...another shot at eternal life.

not sure I'd be so proud of the 4 feet of hotdog, champ
and 2 dozen wings isn’t all that impressive, even when combined with 4 feet of hotdog
although I must say, that’s an odd combo
by Highlifeman21 on Jun 22, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't know
2 dozen wings is nothing, but four feet of hotdog? Eating that much meat that processed can’t be a good idea.

Over the next 3 afternoons, I plan to sample 3 of the best burgers in Manhattan
Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien
Shake Shack – Madison Square Park
I’ll find some way to get pictures, and give you a full field report.
Weather depending, I'm gonna walk down to Shake Shack or Corner Bistro today
supposed to be around 90 today, so I’m hoping that helps me walk off some of the burger intake
The wife wants to meet for lunch tomorrow or Friday, and the Burger Joint in that hotel lobby is only 4 blocks from her training class, and then I’ll wrap up the 3rd on Friday.
What can I say, I love a great burger?
by Highlifeman21 on Jun 23, 2010 7:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Initial thoughts on Shake Shack
pretty similar to the doneness and texture of Zip’s, with slightly better flavor than TTC. Pretty similar bun to TTC, also. Their single is a 4 oz patty. I had the Single CheeseBurger, and the Single ShackBurger, since I wanted to try their ShackSauce. Good burger, to cheese to bun ratio.
Does not, I repeat, does not hold a candle to Gordo’s.
Their ShackSauce was like Miracle Whip with a little bit of something orange and sweet (perhaps marmalade), so it was a sweet and tangy mayo. Complimented the American Cheese well, actually.
I recommend going to make up your mind for yourself, although I wouldn’t make a trip specifically to NYC for this burger. The location I went down to is in Madison Square Park, which is in the Flatiron district. A guy and his gf chatted me up in line, and they go once a week to meet for lunch, and they think it’s the best burger in NYC. I think they’re both wrong.
