Despite Flashbacks to Thursday, Reds Win 6-4 and Retake First Place
Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game
Jay Bruce. Bruce did not make an out tonight, singling 3 times, doubling once, and walking once in his 5 plate appearances. He also swiped a bag. Honorable mentions to Johnny Cueto for going 6-strong and striking out 5, and Drew Stubbs for reaching base 3 times and stealing two bases.
Key Plays
- The Reds lit up the scoreboard early, scoring 2 in the first. Brandon Phillips racked a double to left and scored on Joey Votto's single to center. Joey went to second on the throw (aggressive baserunning!) and scored himself when JNMHSotG Jay Bruce singled.
- They weren't finished roughing up Fausto Carmona (that is one bad ass pirate name, is it not?) as in the 4th inning Laynce Nix lambaysted a 2-run-homer to right field. Dude is hittin' nails lately. He's started the last 3 games since coming off the shadow DL and has 3 homers and 3 doubles.
- The Reds played some smaw baw in the 5th to push another run across, as BeeP reached on an error, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on Votto's ground out, and scored on Scott Rolen's sac fly. Get them on! Get them over! Get them in!
- The Indians finally cracked Cueto in the 6th, who was cruising in his customary fashion. As also is his custom, he was bitten in the tail by the long ball. After walking Trevor Crowe to lead off the inning, he struck out both Shin-Soo Choo and Austin Kearns. That's when Travis Hafner pronkonated the 8th pitch of his at-bat over the center field wall. After walking Johnny Peralta on 7 pitches, there was some concern regarding a blister on Cueto's pitching hand. Dusty Baker came out to check on it, but Cueto insisted it was no thang. He then induced a pop-up from Matt LaPorta.
- After the Reds tacked on another run in the 7th, Francisco Cordero entered the 9th with a 6-2 lead. He struggled mightily. LaPorta led off the inning with a single and an out later Shelley Duncan singled himself. After a walk to Russell Branyan, Trevor Crowe hit a bases-loaded single to score 2. Just as Reds fans began searching for their barf buckets, Coco buckled down and struck out Choo and induced a fly out from Kearns to finish the game. Phew! Reds win 6-4.
Other Notes
- The Reds stole 4 bases tonight. I'm gonna say that's the most they've stolen in a game this season. I'm not even gonna look it up.
- Brandon Phillips hit 2 more doubles tonight, giving him 10 doubles hitting from the 2 hole this season. He's only GIBP 3 times.
- Johnny Cueto has shaved his ERA down to 3.60. I like him.
- It took Coco 36 pitches to get through the 9th. I have a feeling we will not see him tomorrow.
- Nick Masset appeared in his 4th consecutive game. I don't think we'll see him either. Arthur Rhodes was unavailable tonight because he pitched in 3 straight. This 20 game streak without a day off is kind of a bitch.

a team full of Jays
would still be playing now. The game would never end. How would they decide the playoffs?
also, I think you mean “Ja-honny Peralta”

Despite some obvious concerns over holding a lead
Reds are winning games they should win, playing solid D, displaying some good starting pitching and middle relief, and stealing a few games they look to be on the short end. Oh yeah, look at the HAVOC they are bringing lately. So what if none of the position players hits 40 home runs this year (having 3-4 of them knock out 30 is outstanding enough), Reds will make it fun this season and be in a position if they continue to play like this 1st quarter season. There will be a few more arms available 2nd half and who knows, maybe we step on the accelerator some moar. Winning these games against opponents who are down is a positive indicator of the class of this 2010 Reds squad.
Rollin' in the left lane.
A closer shouldn't just be pitching for save situations.
Often times the closer becomes a closer because he pitches with some power and the ability to control that power. They bring a different perspective to then end of a ball game because they can burn it by you when you are wore down or used to seeing another pitcher for a few to several innings, or just having an off day or career haha as far as Mike Lincoln is concerned. My point being that if Coco would have closed out the bottom of the 9th on thursday, chances are the game does not end in a walk off grand salami for the bad guys. True it would have not been a save situation but he would have faired much better and we would have had another W and game up on our division foes.
First Playce!!!
And if you’re wanting to rest your bullpen, why bring Cordero in a non-save situation. He didn’t need the work, as he’s pitched the last couple nights. Just cause it’s the ninth doesn’t mean it’s CoCo time.
Wake up in the clubhouse feeling like Ken Griffey.

nice recap
that was very scary in the ninth In the postgame, you could see that Cordero was thinking about Atlanta. I’m afraid that we will always think of that when we get to the ninth, but this time Cordero used it to help him win. He needs to control the walks and singles a bit better. Maybe that will even out, maybe he has worked too much, but it is possible he starting to decline.
Great to see Bruce do well and Phillips, Votto and Stubbs. Nix is unbelievable right now.

agree that pitching for stats is aggravating
But CoCo can’t pitch the ninth inning of every game. His arm would fall off.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Why didn't Owings pitch more than an inning?
Seems like him and DRH shoulda been able to take care of it.
Dusty cites lefties
Dusty said in postgame that Owings was removed because of a slew of upcoming lefty bats, which are hitting him well apparently.

They are
Lefties are hitting .381/.435/.571 off Owings this year. Then again, they are hitting .421/.450/.474 off DRH this year too. Small sample size caveat, etc.
I think with a 4-run lead, his goal should have been to conserve his bullpen, not play match ups. I would have at least let Owings start the 8th, with DRH warming up. It’s not like Owings NEVER gets lefties out.

My thoughts exactly
You can’t take Owings our every time a lefty comes up with a thin bullpen
It doesn't have to be a save situation,
but as Bubba says, it doesn’t have to be every ninth inning. I don’t agree with bringing Lincoln for that third inning on Thursday was the best move. That seemed like a perfect time to get Fisher some work.

You guys and your Sabremetrics
when will you explain this “janish” stat, I’ve never seen it used

The Atlanta effect
There is no effect from the Atlanta game, right?
If you're not having fun, stop participating.
there is here, but hopefully not with the player
I will tell my grandchildren how I watched Gameday tell me about that GS and, if they eat their veggies, they won’t have to ever experience the terror
In related news
Mr. Joe Votto is leading the NL in home runs and slugging percentage among first basemen.
And he'll still be fourth in All-Star voting
His only chance might be the last guy voted in thing they’ve done the last couple years

Nah, if the Reds are in first place
he’ll be selected since they’ll get at least 2 All Stars
Red Reporter or follow on Twitter: @redreporter
Yeah, I think he'll make it.
Pujols will start. Manuel will take Howard as the DH, and I can see him wanting 3 1B/PH types (Votto, Fielder, Gonzalez).
I voted Votto!

Votto or Dunn? Hmmmmm. Touch choice.
Eh, not so tough. Don’t want to give Dunn but so much ammo in free agent talks by having him get an all-star appearance. But if the season ended today, I’d say the Nats have earned three all-stars: Zimmerman, Capps, and the stat-defying Livan Hernandez.
Votto it is for me. Care to make a case for any other Reds all-stars I should be considering?

Mike Leake should get some consideratin
And, though nearly impossible, Arthur Rhodes has had a hell of a start to the year.

Last year I often voted for Dunn.
But now that he’s at the same position as Joey, not a chance. Sorry, Big Donkey.
