On May 23, 1976, the Reds found themselves in second place, trailing the Dodgers. In a Sunday afternoon game against the Padres that the Reds needed to win they sent veteran Jack Billingham to the mound against Brent Strom.
The Reds offense rolled in this game scoring 11 runs on 13 hits. George Foster and Davey Concepcion led the way with four hits each and Foster drove in five, including a grand slam in the sixth off Rich "meet the" Folkers. Bob Bailey also homered for Cincinnati. Joe Morgan did not play and was replaced in the line-up by Doug Flynn.
