RR Does Pittsburgh: 2010
The Reds make their first 2010 trip into Pittsburgh next weekend, and a group of us is making plans to go.
Some of you might remember that we had a RR contingent in Pittsburgh last season - 'than, snohio, xjjeep, and I went in April and had a pretty good time. ...ok, to be honest, we really haven't heard from xjjeep since - I swear he made it back alive, though! This is actually going to be the 4th season in a row I've been to Pittsburgh for a series, and it's something I highly recommend to everyone.
The question is: Would anyone like to join us?
(I apologize for the lack of notice - I'm a busy, lazy person and finding the time AND motivation to write this was hard! I also imagine that there won't be much interest given that we've previously frightened away xjjeep and since hitching a ride with us would involve being in the same car as 'than for a total of 8 hours, and who wants to do that!?)
In on the road-trip shenanigans for sure are 'than, Chandra, BK, and I. Red Menace is a maybe, and Brendanukkah might be joining us in Pittsburgh. Anyone is welcome to join us. There might be room in 'than's van, although he'll have to verify that one. Of course, you can always drive separately and meet us there - it's not a bad drive at all from the Cincinnati area.
The plan right now is to head out Saturday morning (17th), check into the hotel, then go to the 7:05 game where a copious amount of Yuengling will be enjoyed. We'll go to the 1:35 game on Sunday (18th), then head on back. We'll buy tickets at the games because, let's face it, they will not be hard to come by. Interestingly, the Pirates scalp their own tickets - last year we bought "special tickets" behind the Reds dugout at one of the ticket windows for a few dollars over face value. As far as lodging goes, I'll take care of that depending upon how many people are going. Of course, if you're going to Pitt on your own feel free to make your own reservations, or I can - just let me know what you want to do. Last year we were "fortunate" enough to end up in the same hotel as our very own Jim Day. He was leaving for the game as we were arriving, and he mistook our surprise as elation, I guess, and gave us a big 'ol goofy grin and flashed us the peace sign. I hate that guy.
All told, anyone who goes would probably end up spending ~$20 on a share of the room, ~$40 on two game tickets, and a share of a tank of gas, for which we only had to stop once last year, plus any food and adult beverages. All in all, it's a pretty good deal, and I'm sure it'll be a great time.
Feel free to ask questions either below or via e-mail - my address is available on the site.

I'll be there with my roommates (from Pittsburgh and St. Louis) and i dunno who else
but lots of Pittsburgh fans
hit up Hemingways in the Oakland neighborhood
their drunken chicken is spectacular
Volquez, Bailey, Cueto, Chapman, and Leake. The future is so bright I have to wear sunglasses.
hey
Weren’t you supposed to post a game report from last year’s jaunt?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Probably.
I think I covered the “highlights” – Jim Day, scaring Taylor away, getting overcharged for being Reds fans.
There was also a God-awful walk back to the hotel that will be avoided this year and ’than’s obsession with Yuengling Bock, which will be available next weekend and the real reason he’s going. ;)

Boy would I love to go...but with amount of notice proffered by my once good friend and RR mentor Ash
I have to decline…damn i love a good road trip…Oh well there’d better be lots of juicy pics.
Potential doesn't win games.
Sure thing...
The transportation of alcohol is across state lines is the real reason we do this, I ain’t gonna lie.

The lengths people will go for bad beer....
Although, I do recommend the Yuengling Brewery and Cave tour, if you ever get the chance
While you’re in Pittsburgh, stop @ Primanti Brothers and see if you can get a sandwich without fries and cole slaw in it. I swear it cannot be done.

We're just going to have to disagree on this, like with everything else.
Also, I’ve had Primanti Bros. No thank, not again. Anything that involves cole slaw can blow me.
I have a buddy who's all about Abita beer
And the stuff is just awful, as well.
It’s probably just me, though.

I don't doubt it
The caves and finding out they made ice cream during prohibition were the coolest parts.

the Tampa tour was a big ad
with a free beer at the end. Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee is where it is at. I could live in Milwaukee and be happy, good local beer, good German food, the Reds travel there like 28 times a year, plus a schlep to Chicago, I could see them as many times there as I do at GAP living at home.
I should move to Milwaukee.

I thought that was Youngstown
Or is Youngstown just the armpit of OH?
Regardless, New Jersey has to be high atop any list of candidates for armpit of the nation

My parents have that exact antique ice chest-cabinet thingy!
They keep their liquor in there. Unfortunately for me all the bottles were full of water from when my older siblings went through high school.
I also would enjoy a twelver of Yuengling if possible
Chesterfield Ale if they have it. :)

SOUND FAMILIAR?
Will do, I’ll let you know what they have when we get to the wonderful place that’s open on Sunday.

Careful about Sundays, PA be weird
But you probably already know that.

Don't you have to go to a beer distributor to buy beer in PA?
Or was that just a Philly area thing?
Overpriced 6 packs from a bar or pizza place with a sales license, or have to buy it by the case from a beer distributor.
by Highlifeman21 on Apr 11, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I believe so
I know that’s where I got it when I was there. Some screwed up laws, man.
"The Asian language is very different than ares." -- Justin007000
No, it's state wide
Weird blue laws in PA. Cases of beer must come from a distributor, six-packs from a bar or bodego/pizza joint/etc with a license. Liquor and wine from the state liquor stores. Regulatory fail.
I completely forgot about the state liquor stores
Where you can ONLY get liquor and wine
Whatever happened to 1 stop shopping? When I’m booze shopping, I want to go to 1 store, damnit!

come to chicago
BYOB restaurants, grocery stores sell liquor, you can buy liquor at 4AM, plenty of 4AM bars.

I don't think my wife will let me move to Chicago
CT’s pretty goofy when it comes to hooch. No alcohol sales on Sundays, or Major holidays (seriously, no buying alcohol on 4th of July, wtf?). Gotta go to a Package Store to buy liquor, beer or wine. Only some grocery stores sell beer. And then there’s some crazy retail outlets which are like a poor man’s Party Source where you can get liquor, beer and wine, but it’s usually not good wine (at which time you have to go to a specialty wine store).
And the hours are crazy. 8 to 8 September to May, 8 to 9 May to September. I guess I just got really used to buying booze at odd hours back when I lived in OH.

Depends on your definition of "freedom", really
To say “americans have freedom” is a pretty huge logical fallacy, due to the fact you’re using the blanket statement of “americans”, and you cannot say with absolutely certainty that all americans have “freedom”, especially since you’ve not provided an accurate definition of “freedom”
But it’s cool to broadly generalize, I love to do it too

YOUR NUTS!
Seriously, though, I don’t think we’re going to make that a requirement.
