Cactus League Game 30 Thread: Indians at Reds
The day after final cuts and fans are still reeling. I've moved on. Disappointed in dumping Wladimir Balentien, but there really aren't any egregious mistakes. I don't see any spots on the roster where the obviously superior (and ready for the majors) player lost out. I'm a little anxious on Mike Leake, but I can chalk that up as much to the unknown as anything. Honestly, we'd be going through that with Travis Wood or Aroldis Chapman too.
Today is the last game of spring training for the Reds and Indians. The Reds fly home tonight(?) to prepare for Monday's season opener against the Cardinals. The Indians head to Chicago to open the season against the White Sox. Homer Bailey takes the mound for his final outing before his first regular season start next Friday. His three other veteran rotation-mates have been brutal this week, pitching a combined 12.2 innings, surrendering 26 hits and 20 runs (14 ER). Then again, Leake went 6 innings and gave up just 4 hits and 2 runs. I think there is something to be said for having something to pitch for.
The Indians are throwing out a minor league lineup for the most part today, with several of the players not on the 40-man roster. Don't be surprised if half of the Reds lineup is out of the game before the 6:07 ET tip-off of the Butler-Michigan St. game.
Lineups are after the jump. Audio is available from 700WLW and all corresponding outlets. Or you can follow along without sound on Gameday.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2010 Cincinnati Reds!

You think?
It’s gonna be Nix and Gomes platooned, not Gomes and Dickerson?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I wouldn't be surprised if dusty did it.
"Red Reporter - An elitist clique full of like-minded douchebags." - BK
I could see it
They gave up a lot for Nix; there must be a reason. He’s probably a better defender than C-Dick in the corner, and he has more power. Dickerson has a better OBP, but I don’t think the Reds are convinced of the value of that.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
FWIW
Dusty’s talking about END yesterday:
He’s a dangerous threat off the bench. The combination of him and Nix and when Gomes isn’t playing gives me some thunder of f the bench.
That at least indicates Dusty thinks of Nix as a bench guy.

But why "when Gomes isn't playing"?
Nix and Francisco are both better against righties. Gomes is better against lefties.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I don't think he was commenting on splits.
I think he’s just imagining the scenario in which he’ll have all three of those power hitters on his bench.

Does anyone else
expect Nix to get way too many starts in LF versus righties this year? I think Dickerson is going to get almost as big of screw-job as Wlad.

I expect him to get some starts in LF, yes.
But that’s because Nix is better in the corner spots than the Lorax, IMO.

Matter of fact, I think part of the reason they kept Nix is they see C-Dick getting most of the LF starts and they wanted at least 1 lefty on the bench. If Gomes starts a ton you don’t need Nix.

I'm truly not worried about this
One, Arizona is obviously an extreme hitters environment. The minor league data shows this, as does Janish’s 1.022 OPS and Stubbs’ 1.093. I’d be more worried if guys were reporting arm pain, or if they were walking a ton and not striking out anyone, but that hasn’t been the case.
Conversely, we shouldn’t be surprised if Stubbs doesn’t hit a single HR in April or Votto doesn’t slug .608.

the gamethread at Trent's blog
has some interesting comments on yesterday’s roster massacre.
“Mr. Redlegs” thinks that using Leake as a fifth starter is a bad idea. He thinks they burned an option and started his clock just to keep a roster spot warm until May – if that long. (I guess he’s expecting Chapman to be called up.)
(Me, I think rushing Leake and Chapman both is probably a mistake. We’ll see.)
He says Sutton played himself off the roster with his bad glove, which is why Cairo rose from the grave, so to speak, to grab a spot on the 25-man. With the switch-hitting Sutton gone, they needed a lefty, so Nix got the nod over Balantien.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

why does an apostrophe count as the same number of characters as quotation marks? doesn’t seem fair.
what about a space?
There’s nothing there at all, seems like a waste of a character to me.
