SIS: TV or not TV?
So I was reading a comment when a certain person listed a bunch of cable television shows he watches and some others responded with comments about other shows I have never heard of. This made me curious about the television viewing habits of Red Reporters, so I came up with a list of questions out of nosiness.
1. Do you own a television? If so, how many?
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones?
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)?
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones?
5. How many movies do you watch per week?

My answers
It’s tough for me to answer because I am not in real life right now and there is a television in my room which I occasionally glance at between the time I get home from work and the time I go to the pub. I’ll give my real life answers and put my fake life answers in parenthesis, I guess.
1. I don’t own a television. (There’s a television in my furnished apartment with satellite.)
2. Yes, I watch 30 Rock, Daily Show, and Colbert Report online as well as clips from MSNBC programming.
3. Three hours per week. (Eight to ten hours.)
4. Three – see answer 2 for which ones.
5. One movie a week, rented DVD or online. (Three or four here – these satellite channels are good!)
I am definitely not getting a television when I get back to DC, as I’ve discovered it makes me lazy and braindead. I mean more than usual.
thinking of ditching cable
1. Do you own a television? If so, how many?
Two.
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones?
I watch TV shows online, but not regularly. Documentaries from PBS, CNBC, the History Channel, etc. I watched an episode of “V” recently because former “X-Files” actor Nicholas Lea was in it, and I was curious to see what he looked like these days. I could’ve watched it on TV, but I forgot it was on, since I don’t watch “V” otherwise.
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)?
Probably less than two hours a week, excluding sports.
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones?
None, really. During the off-season, I used to watch “Ghost Hunters,” but it’s gotten pretty silly lately.
5. How many movies do you watch per week?
None.
I have an expanded basic cable subscription, but am seriously considering doing what this guy did, and ditching it for online viewing. More and more people are doing it.
I might get a Netflix subscription instead, so I can watch things like Discovery Channel documentaries. (I love those dinosaur shows.) Sports is the main reason I haven’t ditched cable already. But there are ways around that, too. Because TV has gone digital, it’s now possible to pick up signals over the air that you couldn’t before. You just need a special antenna (which you can build yourself, though they’re not too expensive to buy). And of course, there’s MLB.TV. I just wish they weren’t so evil.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Nick Lea
looks pretty good these days, for a guy who’s pushing 50.
Hard to believe “Ratboy” is now playing people’s fathers.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I like tv, it's a good entertainment option
1. Do you own a television? If so, how many? Yes, I own 4. However, I only have 2 hooked up.
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones? I watch some shows online. I don’t consistently watch any one show online, I just look for something to watch every now and then when I’m bored. Lately, I’ve been watching a lot of Archer.
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)? This is a tough one. Are we to exclude all sports? If so, then I probably watch about 12-15 hours a week.
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? I’ll stick with new shows. Which ones? A bunch: How I met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Rules of Engagement, Law & Order, Law & Order SVU, Law & Order Criminal Intent, American Idol, Glee, Modern Family, Community, Parks & Recreation, The Office, 30 Rock, Archer, Burn Notice, Psych, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Californication, True Blood, Dexter, Desperate Housewives, and others that I’m sure I’m forgetting.
5. How many movies do you watch per week? I used to watch a movie a night when I worked in video stores. I liked that frequency, but unfortunately I’m down to about 1-2 per week now.
I have always had the feeling you two are like bizarro clones.

Me:
1. Do you own a television? If so, how many?
At my actual house, we have one.
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones?
I used to. Haven’t had time for it this semester. Watched Arrested Development, Psych, Family Guy, Burn Notice.
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)?
Shows? Maybe 1-3 hours.
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones?
Right now, it’s only South Park, semi-regularly.
5. How many movies do you watch per week?
At least 3 or 4. Something like that.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
Ditching cable soon
1. Do you own a television? If so, how many?
I own one
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones?
Sometimes. I’ll watch Archer and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I guess I’ll be watching more shows when I cut cable – like Modern Family, HIMYM, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock etc.
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)?
Excluding Reds games? May 3-4
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones?
Archer, HIMYM, Modern Family, The Simpsons, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec
5. How many movies do you watch per week?
Depends on what sports are on – but it’s usually not more than 1 or 2
I’m moving in a month and I’ve already decided to ditch cable although I’m really worried about finding sporting stuff online. I’ve got Mlb.tv, which has been working fine for me so far and I’m thinking of getting Roku too…but I’m kind of worried about watching the World Cup this summer.
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
I know, I know...
The one sports bar by me that will be showing the World Cup will be packed…and I’d rather not deal with the crowds. Maybe if I catch some early games it won’t be nearly as crowded and I can catch the later rounds online
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
A lot of the games will be beginning around 9:00 AM
I’d still expect crowds if I were you, although depending on where you live, they might be smaller. The good news is that the USA-England game is on ABC, at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon. It’s expected to be the most watched soccer game in American history.
by Brendanukkah on Apr 26, 2010 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Cool
Well it looks like I’ll be OK to catch most of the games – lots of early morning trips to the break room. As for weekends, I’ll just hope an HD antenna will suffice. And considering I live in the DC area, I’m going to be running into crowds no matter where I watch it.
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
DC is lousy with soccer bars
You’ll have no problem finding a place to watch the games.

I've noticed that some people have expressed interest in gettin Netflix.
I am a subscriber and I really like it. They sent me an email this morning trying to get me to refer people to their service. If you guys want to subscribe, I can forward you this email, and it has a code that will get you a free month of Netflix service. Let me know if you are interested.
I know a lot of people that have it-
It definitely seems like a good investment, I don’t want to mess with it yet though, personally. I’ll just mooch off of them.

1. Do you own a television? If so, how many? There’s one in this house I live in, but it doesn’t get cable. I’ve only ever seen it on for Lost
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones? I keep on meaning to, but I never remember to once I turn my TV on. I spend too much time on blogs

4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones?I really want to watch Archer. One day…
5. How many movies do you watch per week? Usually about one every other month. I watched Lord of War on a recommendation. I disagree…its watching a sophomore anthropology major yell at you for 2 hours

Answers
1. Do you own a television? If so, how many? I do own a television, but it’s not hooked up right now. I’ve actually gone nearly 13 months without regular television watching. This is more out of laziness than any desire to remove television from my life. Anyone who says living without TV is a good thing is lying to you.
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones? So consequently, yes. If I do watch shows, I watch them online. I regularly catch How I Met Your Mother, Archer, Modern Family, and the Real World/Road Rules Challenge. I used to watch all the Thursday NBC shows (Parks and Recreation, The Office, 30 Rock), but I stopped about a month ago and haven’t caught up. The Big Bang Theory and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia turned out to be kind of a pain in the ass to find online, so I haven’t seen those in awhile.
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)? I’d probably say about 4-5 hours a week watching shows online. I actually don’t watch any Reds games. I do watch a lot of movies on streaming NetFlix. Last night I watched Sex Drive, which was a lot funnier than I expected it to be.
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones? Those ones I mentioned in #2. I miss having a TV, because I’d catch random shows and get sucked into watching them on the reg. Now I have to make it an effort to watch a show, so I’ve missed out on things like Community. Or all day marathons of old seasons of America’s Next Top Model.
5. How many movies do you watch per week? I usually like to put on a movie while I fall asleep. I like going out to movies at the theater too. This weekend I saw Date Night and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and I’ve got a couple of passes to see Exit Through the Gift Store tonight.
Gallup says....
1. Do you own a television? If so, how many? Yes, I own 5. However, I only have 2 hooked up, the low def Bobcatvision and the big screen Kiddievision.
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones? Are you serious?
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)? This is a tough one. I very rarely watch any live television, other than Reds games. Tivo is the greatest…
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? I’ll stick with new shows that get the Tivo treatment…… Which ones? The Mentalist, Big Bang Theory, American Idol, The Office, Burn Notice, Psych, Curb Your Enthusiasm, HBO’s non PPV boxing, Kitchen Nightmares, Man vs Food, Food Wars, Bizarre Foods, Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, Real Time with Bill Maher(shocking, eh?), Prime 9, Cathedrals of the Game. I also watch Ken Burns’ Baseball whenever it is on the tele.
5. How many movies do you watch per week? It depends. On average probably 1-2, more in the winter and much less in the summer. That said, i greatly prefer seeing a film in a locally owned smaller cinema. Multiplexes are for hipster doofuses!
"the only place they lost was the scoreboard"
Is this part of a thesis? Why so curious?
1. Do you own a television? If so, how many?
> yes, one.
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones?
> Not currently, but did before bundling cable with the wi-fi.
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)?
> Excluding baseball and college-basketball, then probably around 10-hrs per week on all other programming. More in the winter, less in summer.
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones?
> Not a regular to any shows, but have favs. They include: 30-Rock, Office, Nature, Nova, Anitique Roadshow, Baseball Tonight, Meet The Press, Daily Show, and the majority of Adult Swim programming.
5. How many movies do you watch per week?
> Probably about 0.5, or 2-3 a month. I’m way under-utilizing my netflix account.

1. Do you own a television? If so, how many? Yes, I have one in my bedroom, it is hooked up to cable but I only get local channels. I don’t turn it on much, and when I do I usually watch Cubs games on WGN or DVDs.
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones? I watch Dexter online, and I sometimes watch The Daily Show or the Colbert Report online, but not often. I used to watch the Office but I don’t anymore
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)? I can’t answer that, sometimes I turn the Simpsons on at 5 for background, but I haven’t even done that in a few weeks.
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones? Ah not many, I used to religiously watch the Daily Show and Colbert Report, but I don’t have the time. I don’t think I watch any shows regularly.
5. How many movies do you watch per week? Not that many. Since the New Year I’ve watched a couple of Mystery Science Theater 3000’s with my roommates, Sugar, and both seasons of Flight of the Conchords on DVD. Other than that I haven’t even used the DVD player.
I am living alone next year and I’m not sure if I will get cable, since I never just turn my TV on for background entertainment when I’m board. I may get it, if they offer me some sorta special new subscriber deal, but otherwise I may just get internet.

1. Do you own a television? Yes If so, how many? Six (all on DirecTV)
2. Do you watch television shows online? Which ones? Only something linked here.
3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)? After my kids go to sleep for an hour or two per night, so, uh, I guess about 10-14 hrs per week.
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Some are seasonal, others are when I can. Which ones? Generally, HBO shows like Entourage, True Blood, Real Time with Bill Maher and I never miss a big fight. I watch Jon Stewart on occasion.
5. How many movies do you watch per week? I used to watch bunches. Kids change all of that. I still have my Blockbuster online membership which I recommend highly.

Since I know everyone's curious about my answers...
1. I have one television. It’s not a very good one. I bought a converter box and this antenna primarily so that I could watch the Olympics and the NCAA tournament.
2. I watch clips from the Daily Show pretty regularly, probably averaging one per weekday. The only full-length show I watch online is Glee. Yep, I watch Glee.
3. This depends on whether I have a reasonable amount of work to do while watching (i.e. grading), and whether the Reds are on. Sometimes I watch the Simpsons or My Name is Earl (it’s like they made a show based on my hick relatives!) on TV while I eat dinner, and sometimes I watch stuff late at night when I don’t feel like working or sleeping, but that plus whatever stuff I watch online probably works out to a few hours a week.
4. Yeah, I think I answered this one already.
5. I used to watch movies pretty regularly when I had Netflix, but then I cancelled that and I just haven’t been renting many. There’s a cheap local place here that rents old stuff for $2 and new stuff for $3, so that’s always an option; I just haven’t felt like it much lately. At some point I’ll probably go rent the last few seasons of the Office and catch up on that.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
That is one beautiful antenna...I have this one for my upstairs 15 yr. old klunker

First answer is re: my real person life. Parenthetical answer is re: my current unemployed hermit life.
<with a nod to Daedalus for the split personality option!>
1. Not personally, but someone I live with always does. (Now I inherited my roommate’s ancient television when she moved in with her fiancee. I even bought a converter box for it, but haven’t hooked it up.)
2. Only if I missed one of my regular shows, which are The Office, 30 Rock, and Lost and, occasionally, How I Met Your Mother. (Now, in my hermit state, I watch lots more. Add to the above: Glee, Parks & Rec, FlashForward, Bones, Modern Family.)
3. Probably 4-5 hours? (Nope, not going to do the math on this one. It will make me sad.)
4. See above. (See above.)
5. Probably one, in both versions of muffin life. Unless DVDs of West Wing and Sports Night count as movies. That would add some time.

Dexter went way down on my list in recent years
After season 2 i was nearly convinced it was the best show on TV since the Sopranos finale. But the season 3 and 4 dialogue just kept getting hokier and hokier, and I found myself disliking most of the characters. It’s still in the top half of my shows, but nowhere near the top.
Alway the optimist...I like your think kid...
why do i keep agreeing with you?
I don’t like it.
SPOILER ALERT, IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN SEASON 4 YET BUT YOU PLAN TO, DON’ T READ THIS.
But Season 3 was a bit of a let down, but Season 3 and Season 4 both told us something. Season 3 proved that Dexter couldn’t have a friend, and Season 4 proves he can’t have something as normal as a family. Season 5 we will see how he deals with reverting to the person he was in Season 1.
I hate Dusty Baker so goddamn much.

i agree with that
i still like the overall story arc, and john lithgow was terrific. but the supporting characters are bad and getting worse. I was really hoping Deb was going to be the one in the bathtub.
Alway the optimist...I like your think kid...
i would've liked it to be deb as well...
i wasn’t torn up about it being who it was, but i did feel really sorry for that baby. that ending still makes me sad when i think of it.
i was pissed about who it was
i grew to really like that character. I think that character evolved a great deal over the last two seasons while everyone else regressed. That person was my second-favorite on the show.
Alway the optimist...I like your think kid...
i haven't read spoilers for the upcoming season

Paul’s parents took them to Disney, and Rita mentions that Paul’s parents are great and the kids love them. So they may leave the show too, leaving just Dexter and the baby.

I used to be a TV junkie. Then I had a kid and now I prefer to get sleep when possible.
1. I own 3 TVs. All of them are on at all times, even if I’m not home.
2. I only watch shows online if I miss one and the DVR fails, or if I want to get caught up on show that I hadn’t started watching yet.
3. I’d say about 15-20 hours. Usually an hour or two after the kid goes to bed every night. On the weekends, it depends on if I run into something I like and I don’t feel like working around the house.
4. I watch Chuck, Big Bang Theory, Lost, Modern Family, The Office, and 30 Rock in the fiction worlds. I regularly watch Chopped, Iron Chef America, Good Eats, The Soup, and The Daily Show, though I don’t plan to watch them. I usually watch them if they are on when I’m flipping through the channels. I’ve also started watching Entourage on SpikeTV on Sunday nights. But that’s because I’m still whacked out from my Sunday coke binge.
5. Maybe one movie per month.

3. How many hours per week do you spend watching television or online television shows, movies, and news (excluding Reds games)? 15-18.
4. How many shows do you watch regularly? Which ones? Excluding local news, two — Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory.
5. How many movies do you watch per week? Usually none. Maybe one here and there.

I’m forming a TV club, like a book club, with a friend once LOST is over. The idea is to watch all the great shows, especially over the past 10 years, that we’ve missed. Neither of us has seen The Wire or West Wing, so we’re starting with those. I hope to one day be a true TV snob and say things like, “Oh I don’t watch movies. I’d rather kick back and watch season 2 of Northern Exposure.”

I missed all TV from 1969 - 1975
I spent most of my time those years traveling on the road playing in bands.
I got out of the habit of watching and really never got back into it.
Now, of course, TV has expanded to grotesque levels of simpering drivel called reality shows, simpering driveling lying shit call ‘news’ shows and simpering painfully extracted hard turds called ‘network shows’…

I come down on none of the above
I have 2 TVs, neither of which has been plugged in or used in at least 2 years.
I watched TV when I was forced to while in the hospital and found that there is nothing on it that is different from what I saw in 1979.
I watch the Reds games on the Web with the sound off because the announcers are so fucking dull and redundant that it makes me sick. I would listen to the radio with the sound off as well but you’d think I was weird if I did that.
lefties tend to have looping swings for some reason, no idea why -- jch
I can't watch baseball with the sound off, or without annoucners unless I'm at the park
Like I think it is because the field is so big, announcers help me understand everything that is going on. When I was in Cuba, I tried to watch the World Series which was on ESPN Deportes, and I just couldn’t get into it because I had no idea what they were saying. Local channels broadcasted the Pan-American Baseball tournament, I went to a game in the ballpark and loved it, but I couldn’t get into the games I watched on TV with the Spanish speaking announcers.

One in eight to cut cable and satellite TV in 2010
Though more live sports are becoming available over the Internet, namely CBS’s coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament, ESPN3.com and packages like MLB TV, most sports are still watched on television. And since sports programming makes up as much as 50% of a pay-TV provider’s costs, customers who are not sports fans are essentially paying half of their cable or satellite bill on channels in which they have no interest.
Interesting. If sports was actually “pay as you go” – only those interested paid for it – would players’ salaries take a hit?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
On the other hand, if there were an option to ONLY subscribe to sports channels
I know some extra sales the cable companies could make in a heartbeat. There are so many channels on television now, I’d think anyone who gets cable pays mostly for channels they’re not really interested in.
by the finest muffins on May 3, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
the first provider to come out with a truly a la carte option
will end up making billions. im guessing though that the programmers are vehemently against this, which is probably why it hasnt happened yet.
by Charlie Scrabbles on May 3, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think it's just the programmers
The cable companies are fighting tooth and nail against a la carte. That’s a lot of money they’d lose.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
that's what i was thinking
why blame sports? one of the reasons i never got cable was because the only channels i would watch would be E$PN and Comedy Central and maybe the Travel Channel on occasion.
Before Senator McCain sold his soul to Sarah Palin, he was working on some piece of legislation that would make it legal for us to buy what channels we wanted. I wonder whatever happened to that.
Ala cart cable is illegal right now?
That isn’t being snarky, but is it actually illegal?
On a side note I feel like the higher number channels like the Food Network would suffer, because those are not channels people usually consciously sit down and decide to watch, rather they find while channel/guide suffering. How many people actually plan to watch the Food Network?
I hate Dusty Baker so goddamn much.
i don't know the specifics
but yeah, the reason you can’t buy individual channels has something to do with the law, a law put into place by the telecommunications corporations. it’s all very vague in my mind. i just remember when it looked as if we’d actually get to choose, but it went away in silence. perhaps someone more knowledgeable can elaborate…
while you're here
I’d like to thank you for launching this TV thread, which has been one of my favorites, without making it condescending or judgmental. I know that my obsession with TV is partially due to my lack of a life, but I’m glad you didn’t bring that up and just made this a fun SIS thread. Thanks!

I had no idea
I probably won’t get cable when I live alone next year. I barely watch the tv in my apartment with cable, I mostly watch the Daily Show and Colbert Report, which I can watch online. I have a TV in my bedroom and I can’t remember the last time I turned it on, maybe when the Cubs were on WGN?
I hate Dusty Baker so goddamn much.

Some of the major lobbyists and contributors might not have liked that idea.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
I think there are a lot of people who consciously watch the food network
My mom has it on almost all the time she’s in the kitchen.
And my sister is devoted to “Iron Chef.”
IMO, the channels that would suffer are the small local channels. I know I would punt the local religious channel in a heartbeat if I could, but by law, the cable company has to include it.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
What's that I hear?
The unmistakable sound of the failhorn. Alton Brown is awful. I can barely stomach him when I watch ICA.

the man has a point
I guess if you were allowed to opt-in to ala carte channels, that’d be cool. But a lot of my tv viewing is flipping channels and stumbling onto something I like. I’d like to have the opportunity to do that, myself.

i love Anthony Bourdain
somewhat ironically, the first time i saw No Reservations was the Lebanon one when he got stuck in Beirut when Israel started bombing the hell out of the city.
I think sports is often singled out
Because it’s far and away the most expensive item on the menu. When it comes to cable costs, sports fans are eating lobster and filet mignon while everyone else is eating pizza and burgers, and we’re splitting the check.
The “a la carte” movement started with the wingnuts. They didn’t want to pay for programming they considered immoral. Liberals jumped on the bandwagon, not wanting to pay for Fox News.
But I think sports fans would end up being the ones most hurt. Maybe some people would sign up just for sports, but a lot more would drop the sports channels, meaning those who wanted them would have to pay more. Everyone pays for ESPN, but only 20% of cable viewers actually watch it.
I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing. But I think it would be a very big change in the current pricing and revenue model. Far greater than most people realize.
