Cactus League Game 29 Thread: Reds at Indians
As best as I can follow, these players have been cut: Wladimir Balentien, Aaron Miles, Matt Maloney, Travis Wood, and Jared Burton. Mike Leake has won the 5th starter spot. I wouldn't have been upset with any of Leake, Maloney, Wood, or Aroldis Chapman, so I really don't mind Leake getting the job. I just hope he doesn't turn into Ryan Wagner 2.0. It also looks like Logan Ondrusek, Juan Francisco, and Miguel Cairo have made the team.
Honestly, I'm shocked that they dumped Balentien. I'm assuming that's to make room for Laynce Nix. Frankly, this is the wrong decision. However, it is not one that is going to make or break this team. Both are 5th outfielders at this point. I think Balentien had much more upside, but I don't think he would have gotten enough playing time to really make a difference. Since he is out of options, hopefully they can trade him for something more than pocket lint.
As for tonight's game, Bronson Arroyo makes his last tune up start before the regular season. I hope he doesn't get rocked because I REALLY don't want to hear the panic from fans who wonder where all of our great pitching went. It is still spring training.
Burton was supposed to pitch tonight along with Arthur Rhodes and Mike Lincoln. Not sure if that's going to happen now with Fay reporting that Burton was optioned. I suppose there's no reason he couldn't pitch.
Lineups are after the jump. Audio is available from 700WLW and all corresponding outlets. Or you can follow along without sound on Gameday.

okay
It sounds like Francisco will be optioned to Louisville when Leake is called up.
Jockstrap said he’s a “power threat off the bench for the first few games.”
Dammit, I thought they would DFA Lincoln. But I guess 11 pitchers really isn’t enough. Most teams go with 12. And they have too many infielders at the moment. Cairo doesn’t have options, so it has to be Francisco or Janish. I’m guessing it’s Francisco.
Jockstrap also says they’re trying to trade Miles and Wladdy.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Dusty said no one is going to be sitting around very much and that everyone's going to play.
Which means Janish is getting cut.
But how great would it be if Miguel Cairo provides veteran leadership for precisely 5 days?

12 Pitchers is too much, IMO
14 position players, 11 pitchers. That’s how teams should roll, especially AL teams, but why not NL teams too? Is 1 more specialized bullpen arm really going to make a difference?

on one level
i can understand why they think Nix > Wladdy. Nix plays a bit better defense and has a lefty power bat. his strengths fit well in the 5th OF role. Wladdy is the better overall player and has the potential to be an above average starter, which is something Nix could never be, but that’s not what the Reds need right now. it’s a short-sighted move, and i think it’s dumb as hell, but i can kinda see their rationale. if i squint.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Apr 2, 2010 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions
And, truth be told, they don't need a project
With Harang/Arroyo coming off the books, can’t they go buy a left fielder next year if Gomes isn’t the long-term guy? The Plan dictates that Stubbs and Bruce will hold down center and right, so he’s blocked there. I guess I don’t see the reason to keep Balentien. He needs to play every day, and right now, he doesn’t have that chance with the Reds.
"Red Reporter - An elitist clique full of like-minded douchebags." - BK
And, to be fair,
one position the Reds have a lot of potential players is LF. It’s not like they need Wlad, I just don’t like it when my team cuts a good player in favor of a far inferior one.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. -Aristotle
Nix is 29..he's at the time in his career when
1. He can handle a role job
2. Can sit on the bench and still deliver
3. Can play all three outfield positions
Wlad would be wasted…better for him to be traded if he ain’t playing everyday and he is no Gomes.

Topped with a small glass bowl of Golden Passion Caviar – a special salt-free dessert caviar – infused with passion fruit and orange, it’s served in a crystal goblet with an 18-carat gold spoon and a tiny mother of pearl spoon crowned with a gilded sugar flower. I don't know
he pitched 150ish innings last year. Assuming a 20% increase, which is considered safe, he could go 170 this year. I don’t think he’ll approach that as the 5th starter. They can skip him a fair few times, and I’m sure Dusty will be somewhat careful with him. I think he’ll be OK

But what’s with the loyalty to Nix and Cairo? And why not let Francisco play every day in AAA with the choice to call him up if Rolen is injured?
I’m glad Leake won the job, but I don’t get why Cairo is on the 25 man, why Lincoln instead of Burton is on the 25 man, why Nix instead of Wlady.

by RedsMasochist on Apr 2, 2010 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions
maybe
i hope they can get something for him. of course, there is a slim possibility that he can slip through waivers. teams are all setting their 40-mans right now and most dont have any room to spare. maybe we can slip him through.

Nix, I don't get
They let him walk, and only signed him when no one else made an offer.
There must be something about Wladdy we don’t know, because he’s still young (four years younger than Nix), seemingly with a lot of promise, but teams aren’t exactly lining up for him.
Cairo, I can understand. Aside from Janish, the Reds infielders sucked big, green, warty pickles. With Rolen being notoriously fragile, and Votto maybe needing time off this year, like last year, they wanted someone they could trust to start for awhile. Miles and Sutton were just awful.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
But it's Spring!
BP is highly durable, Janish plays a mean SS, Francisco is there to provide an adequate replacement at 3B, although not defensively, and couldn’t someone besides Cairo play first? He’s old and bad.
Cairo is old
But he’s not that bad. I think he’s a decent backup…who will be content to be a backup. (The Mets actually offered him the starting 2B job a few years ago, and he turned them down to be a bench guy with the Yankees.)
At his age, I’m sure he’s lost a step, but his defense was solid when I used to watch him. (Admittedly, playing SS in Jeter’s place probably made him look better than he was.) He’s an excellent baserunner, though not a speedster. He’s not a great hitter, but he’s a smart one. I would rather have him than Miles.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
and he won't have to play SS
because we have PJ on the bench. He’ll back up Rolen, BP and Votto, I’d fathom.
"Red Reporter - An elitist clique full of like-minded douchebags." - BK
Well
it’s nice to have an extra backup. In case of unexpected injury and the like. Especially for SS and CF, which are challenging.
Cairo was also the Yankees’ third catcher. They never used him in that role, but he was considered their emergency catcher.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
He's old, and he's pretty bad
He hasn’t been league average offensively or defensively since 2004. The only thing I can think of is that they want Sutton to play everyday, and they must really have hated Miles.

Though I wouldn’t be surprised if the Reds try to trade Wladdy for an infielder.

Well, we haven't lost Sutton
If he gets his swing straightened out down there, he’ll be called up in no time.
I have a feeling the shuttle between Louisville and Cincinnati will be getting a heavy workout this year.
I really thought they were going to keep Miles, just because they wanted a veteran who could hold down 3B for awhile. I don’t think they trust Janish or Sutton to do that.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
He was a B-/C+ prospect in Houston
Their fans weren’t happy to lose him, but he doesn’t project to be an all-star either. Obviously he has the connection the swing coach, and that should start paying off soon, but his ceiling right now is a solid everyday player.

I don't think .280/.330/.500 is out of the question
But that’s optimistic. I think he’ll be more valuable as a bench bat/super sub because of his defensive versatility at 2B, 3B and OF. As he keeps working with his coach, he should start to develop some power too, and could probably hit 20 HR in a full year of playing everyday when given the chance if his bat continues to develop.

i could see
.280/.360/.470 as a ceiling. he has decent plate discipline with a minor league career isoD of .098. im bullish on him.

He might be Adam Rosales when he grows up
I think what sunk Sutton was his bad defense. His bat wasn’t good enough to make up for it.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Sutton's bat is already as good as Rosie's, if not better right now
"aaron harnann is so aweseom" - justin

what makes you say that?
He’s a switch hitter, but other than that, I don’t see how he’s a better player than Rosales.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Looking it up, their stat lines in the big leagues are eerily similar
Sutton’s SLG is higher, but the other two numbers are very similar. The difference to me is that Sutton has more pop in his bat, and has put up most of his numbers battling injury problems that he’s finally over for the first time in 2 years. And Rosales will absolutely kill you defensively and Sutton from what I’ve seen isn’t horrible.
"aaron harnann is so aweseom" - justin
by BK on Apr 2, 2010 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah
Their major league numbers are a very small sample size, and their minor league numbers are very similar. Sutton’s SLG is better, but Rosales has a better OBP and so a higher OPS.
They are almost exactly the same age, and Rosie made it to the big leagues a year earlier than Sutton…even though he was drafted a year later.
I disagree about the defense. I’m not a fan of Rosales’ defense, but I think Sutton is worse. Rosales started out as a SS. He’s no Janish, but I think his glove is better than Sutton’s.
I think it’s Sutton’s poor defense that got him sent down. If you’re going to lead the team in errors, you better have a big bat.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Not sure if watching Rosie spaz around in the infield last year has anything to do with my view of him
But I’d be willing to bet that Sutton has a better year this year than Rosales does.
Rosales may have reached the big leagues earlier, but he was a year older when drafted and had 4 years of D-1 NCAA ball. Sutton only has one year of college ball listed.
Rosales started out as a SS, but was moved to 1B primarily in ‘07 in A+ and AA ball. Sutton was mostly a 2B until last year when he got the Reds, and moved to a utility role there. Rosales has been playing 1B and SS much longer than Sutton has been playing anything other than 2B. The learning curve there will even out, and while I don’t think Sutton’s even a good defender, I’ve watched Rosie butcher SS long enough that I don’t like him there.

I totally agree about Rosales being a spaz
I think the A’s are freakin’ insane to even consider him as a starting SS.
But I’m underwhelmed by Sutton’s defense as well.
My theory of bench players…you have to be good at two out of three: hitting, defense, baserunning.
Sutton is theoretically good at hitting, but he didn’t show it this spring. He’s not a good baserunner or a good defender. (I’d put Rosales in the same boat, though he’s a better baserunner.)
Cairo has a good glove, and he’s a good baserunner. Not much of a stick, but he was a good hitter, he wouldn’t be a bench player.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
As of today (well, 4/2)
The official site has him listed as second on the depth chart at 2nd, SS, and 3rd. I’d say he’s making the team.
but not as a starter
I could see him making the team. I could even see him as a starter at 3B. But starting at SS…that just boggled my mind, that they would even think it.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Sorry, missed that part. It's late, my brain reads every third word.
Looks like they’re going with Cliff Pennington (I say we christen this guy the new “some dude”) at short. Who knows, depending on how that goes, Rosie might be starting at some point over there.

Could be.
Let’s assume that Chapman is productive/awesome.
Let’s assume that either Bailey or Cueto is productive/good.
Let’s assume that either Harang or Arroyo gives quality starts more often than not.
So yeah, Leake’s production could fit somewhere in those last two groups.

Mark my words. I love this kid, and I rarely like pitchers. He gets it. He’s the type of guy who can give you “I really didn’t have my best stuff today” after giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, 2 BB, and 5 K in 7 IP. By the way, the Reds win 5-3 in this scenario.

but Good God. They really made a mess on the cutting room floor. I know these are mostly marginal players, but they’re keeping Lincoln and shipping Burton for Ondrusek? Incorrect.
Cairo over Sutton? I guess I don’t care that much as long as Sutton gets a chance once he’s mashing again in Louisville. He’s probably not any worse than Miles would have been.
Did Nix take Balentien’s spot? If he did – terrible move. Very incorrect. If he gets sent down when Leake comes up and Francisco stays it’s weird but not nearly as bad. All depends on what you get by trading Wlad (assuming that’s what’s happening.)

Bringing up Ondrusek is an intriguing move, I just wish he were taking Lincoln’s spot.
The really baffling move was Nix and Francisco over Wlad. It’s pretty well covered above, but I’m assuming Francisco is the loaner player (until Apr 11). If they can get a decent return for Wlad, it could be an OK logjam-clearing move.

Nix will be taking Wladdy's spot
The Reds are hoping to trade Wlad.
I don’t think Nix or Balantien can be sent down. Wlad is definitely out of options, and I think Nix is as well.
Jocketty as good as said that Francisco will be sent down when Leake is called up. He has options, the others don’t. (Except Janish, and I don’t think they’re gonna send him down.)
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
The thing that bugs me
If we’re basing a roster spot off of springs, who gets the spot?
Player A: .273/.283/.614/.897
Player B: .327/.353/.571/.924
Number of players in camp with a better OPS than player B: 4 (Stubbs, Gomes, Votto, Janish)
You may say that Player A’s numbers are nothing to complain about, and I think you’d be right, but Player B played his ass off and it showed. Guess who’s on the team?
"aaron harnann is so aweseom" - justin
by BK on Apr 3, 2010 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions
I don't think they really base it off spring training
If they did, Janish would be starting at SS instead of Cabrera.
I don’t get it myself. Laynce has a little more power. And he’s left-handed; maybe that was part of it.
Maybe the Reds just thought Wlad would bring more in trade than Nix.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Yeah, I think they saw Wlad as expendable
They’re set on a Gomes-Dickerson platoon, so Wlad’s value is wasted as a 5th OF. They clearly see more upside in Francisco. It could end up being the right move in hindsight, but it carries a lot of risk considering Francisco’s uncertain future and the uncertainty of a return on Wlad. The team is definitely worse in the shortterm.

Sayeth the Fay
How good is the roster? Ask me that after 60 games.
But give the Reds credit for one thing: They went with who they thought were the best players. If they didn’t, Aaron Miles ($2.7 million) and Wladimir Balentien (out of options) make it. Those were both guys Walt Jocketty brought in. A character flaw for a lot of GMs is to stay too long with your guys. Jocketty didn’t do that.
And I still make the Miles-for-Willy Taveras trade. This way the Reds only eat $2.7 million, not all $4 million of Taveras’ contract.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I have to like the notion that ...
… there appeared to be serious competition for roster spots this year instead of having the players just go through the motions. Seems like that should pay dividends.
