Aaron Miles Released, Wladimir Balentien headed to Louisville
Both Miles and Balentien cleared waivers. Miles was let go, which means the trade this winter was Adam Rosales for cash. Balentien has been assigned to Louisville. I wonder if they'll be dumping an outfielder since it's kinda crowded already.

I'm glad Balentien cleared
I figured someone would pick him up. It’ll be good to have a little thunder to call up if need later in the season.
im absolutely baffled and delighted that no one picked up Balentien
the Nats are running out Willies TaverHarris in RF. i cant believe im saying this, but if Jim Bowden were running that club he would have made the right decision. /head explodes

Good news
I guess the Nationals are happy with Willy Taveras and Willie Harris in RF? That team is weird. I think there’s a clause their charter that says they have to pick up a certain # of Reds castoffs per season, but I’d never have guessed they’d essentially chooseTaveras over Wlad for a corner outfield position.

Can we say it?
Can we say this another move by Walt that worked splendidly? Sure, we might liked to have had Balentien instead of Nix, but now we have both AND the option to send either of them to AAA! And in the time that we didn’t have Wlad, we did go 5-3. This was a gamble, sure, but it paid off. Walt’s coming up roses every time!

gotta agree, 'nukkah
I just hope Bruce’s 2010 mirrors that of Walt’s first few years….slow starter, but it clicks after a few rough patches. Walt’s navigated this pretty damn well, I must say, but the make or break will be mid-season when he’s got to deal with Chaproyorang before the deadline.

After a junkyard of false starts
Walt seems to be cruising.
It’s possible they felt Nix would be more likely to refuse assignment and be snatched up than Wlad being grabbed on waivers after rosters had been set. The risk of losing Wlad may have been worth it to gain some short-term depth at AAA and MLB level. Still, like you say, most would rather have Wlad up north than Nix.
With how craptacular the LF production has been so far, we may be seeing Wlad in due time.

I'm not sure we can send either of them down to AAA once they are on the big club without again exposing each of them to waivers.
Can anyone confirm this? I believe they are both out of options.

Nix isn't listed as out of options on the MLBTR page
but I’m guessing that’s an oversight? He doesn’t have the 5 years of service time to refuse assignment.

Interesting note
From TMI, via espn.com:
- Apparently, leadoff is the new seventh. Leadoff batters are hitting .249 with an OBP of .316. Meanwhile, the seventh spot is a collective .250 with an OBP of .316
The rest of the article’s Insider, so I won’t link, but it’s pretty telling, I guess.
Apparently, we’re not the only ones who are having issues thusfar. Also, I was stat-hunting today, and for as much as we’ve bitched about our offense thusfar, we’re 9th in runs and 6th in total bases in the NL thusfar, while having faced several so-called ‘aces’ in the process.

I wonder if Philly will think about picking up Miles
Rollins just went on the DL. They have Castro and nothing at short right now, and no good options in the minors.
I'm not sure the best of Castro and Miles combined is worthy of starting in the big leagues

I'd trade Janish for Halliday
I’d grouse about it, but I’d do it in the end

Add Wlad to the list of Bats who should be with the big league team
The difference would be very marginal, but in terms of “bullets in the gun,” I’d rather have Sutton, Burton/Maloney and Wlad up. It looks like they may call up del Rosario or Maloney for temporary bullpen help, which probably means Cairo gets sent down? Though I wonder how long Ondrusek will skate.

how can he possibly get solid playing time with all those OFers down there?
Running out to frontyard laughing! -Fat Vegas Alan
It's not really that crowded.
Josh Anderson, Danny Dorn, Chris Heisey, Luis Terrero, and Todd Frazier. Dorn has been playing mostly first base and Terrero has been at DH. Sweet has also started Sutton and Wilkin Castillo in the outfield for one game each. I wouldn’t think finding some playing time for Balentien would be too hard.
by RedsMasochist on Apr 14, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions
True
Frazier in left, Heisey center, and Wlad in right is a good OF. Put Dorn at first and let the other guys fight over being first base coach

i guess i didn't think of it that way...
i was assuming dorn was playing RF and they were hoping to get END and frazier quality time in left.

Honestly, I forgot about Francisco.
He’ll probably be in the third base rotation as well as left. Sutton has started a couple of games there, with Valaika, Castillo, Frazier, and Francisco starting once each so far.

Does he seriously have to bat 2nd? No offense, Paul, but I wouldn’t bat you higher than 8th.

I'm more likely to bat Cabrera there
than Janish. Even when I was in support of Janish playing every day, I wanted him to bat 8th. Sure, I’d probably bat Cabrera 8th too, but I’m not pulling my hair out because he bats 2nd. Cabrera batting 2nd is stupid. Janish batting 2nd is ignorant.

I kind of understand his thinking here (the thinking, not so much the result)
He likes a guy who can bunt, hit-and-run, or hit to the right side in the second spot. He sees Rolen as an “RBI guy” so he goes lower in the order, while Bruce and Gomes don’t make enough contact, and Hernandez is too slow.
by RedsMasochist on Apr 14, 2010 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I would never, ever, ever put Janish 2nd either, but one thing you can say for him is that he makes a lot of contact.
Short pop-fly type contact, but still….

Gonna play diablo's advocate here...
Maybe there is something to be said about “routine” here, something touches on the human side of the game. Not to defend Fistband’s complete disregard for the numbers, but maybe it has to do more with keeping the routine the same for most of the other 7 players in the line-up.
Somebody made the point today (I think in the thread about P-Doc’s great affection for Slyde) that maybe giving Nix the occasional start is more about balancing personalities and keeping everyone feeling positive about their role (though this doesn’t justify opening day). That said, we have all been pretty miffed that Yanni hasn’t gotten his shot yet, especially in light of the fact that he was our projected starting shortstop for most of the offseason.
I guess it goes back to the question about how you evaluate the “chemistry” of a team. I don’t have a clear answer, but if everyone is contributing in their roles and it is adding up to wins, I’m happy.
Tanzen!

batting second? He has to be a bit perplexed.

I'm sure he wouldn't
But even if he did, I don’t think he’d disagree with Dusty’s decision.
MLB Trade Rumors had an assessment of Jocketty up, before he came to the Reds. It described him as leading the anti-stathead brigade in St. Louis, and implied that that was the reason he was ousted. Just couldn’t get along with the stat side of the house.
