The Reds Finally Realize Game 2 is a Big Deal

It looks like Red Reporter may have an effect on the Reds after all.  As you all know, for several years now, it has been a Red Reporter tradition to get together and go to Game 2.  We have braved all kinds of weather, and for the most part have sat in an empty stadium.

It looks like the Reds have taken notice, and decided to try and draw a crowd this year.  Maybe it was a good idea to buy tickets in advance?  We have long known that "Opening Night" (As they are now calling it) was going to have a kickass giveaway.  Who wouldn't want a Reds Snuggie?  However, it looks like they have a lot more planned.  Not too long ago, it  was announced that there would be fireworks after the game.  That's always a sure be to draw a good crowd.

They have also announces a slew of other game 2 activities.  As a Game 2 Veteran, I can assure you that none of these things have been happening in previous years. This is a rundown of "Opening Night's" events, or you can Click here for the Reds Site.

Here's a rundown of the night's events:

Opening 5:10 p.m. Reds fleecie
  • Hall of Fame breezeway gate opens to all fans
  • Reds Fleecie Giveaway (first 20,000 fans), presented by hhgregg
  • Fan Zone Fun: "Meet & Greet" with current Reds players and special appearance by Hall of Famer Joe Morgan, Carnival Performers, Games and Reds House DJ "DJ Sab"
  • Right field Porch: Swingtime Big Band performing
Act I 6:30 p.m. Joe Morgan
  • Special "Opening Night" Team Introductions
  • Ceremonial first pitch by Joe Morgan
  • Anthem Performed by "Widow Douglas" (Jenn Scott) from The Children's Theatre's production of "Tom Sawyer"
  • Flyover: Four (4) F-16s from the 178th Fighter Wing of Springfield, Ohio
Act II 7:10 p.m. Act III Post-Game
  • 101st Airborne Rangers U.S. Army Parachute Demonstration Team
  • Fireworks Spectacular, presented by Hollywood Casino

I can't decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing

One of the best things about Game 2 was that it wasn’t full of fans that were there for everything but the game. Now, I’m not so sure…

real fans go to game 50

when the Reds are hopelessly out of the race.

Real Fans go to this game. 36 degree game time temperature and it kept dropping. But Belisle was awesome that night.

it snowed a bit, too

i brought a very warm sleeping bag and was pretty comfortable.

We brought blankets, etc.

But left after five innings or so, I couldn’t subject my kids to that crap any longer.

A sleeping bag to the ballpark?

that seems a bit bulky. I just take blankets and wear several layers.

I like Game Three idea

Day baseball, cheap ducats, 3/4 of seats empty!

I think the Reds are finally on the mark promoting Opening Night. The weather looks to be cooperating this year and there might be 22k+ this year!

Real fans go to the Civil Rights Game!!!

SRO tix for Game Three? I call shenanighans. I’d be stunned if there were more than 12k in attendance for that game last year.

So is there anyway we can meet you at the ballpark?

Or an ideal parking lot or the Pro-shop perhaps. It just doesn’t work for us if we want to get drunk to take the bus back and forth to Newport. Besides, last RR game I got shitfaced. The last thing I need the second time around is more alcohol. Let me know if this is too much of an inconvenience. I can try to think up some other alternative. 22 bucks is too good of a deal to pass up. Do I get two Bud Lights with this ticketing package as well?

Email me if you can, Drew(at)gotechbench.com

Slyde can leave a ticket in your name at Will Call

I did that last year when I met up with somebody at the game, they got their ticket without an issue.

Maybe we could nominate someone else for this job.

Check it

In 2007, the game time temp for Game 2 was 36° F. I’ve seen the projected low for Wednesday at 52° F. That’s downright balmy! We may not need snuggies after all.

Did you see Modern Family this week? Phil’s desire for the iPad made me think of you for some reason.

Red Reporter or follow on Twitter: @redreporter

by Slyde on Apr 2, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

We haven't started watching it yet.

I am sure that my wife will love it. But beginning next week I’m gonna need to set aside more time for the nation’s pastime.

Regarding the iPad- I’ve got one reserved but I keep going back and forth on whether or not I really want it (ie: really want to spend $500 on it). I think I want it but I don’t know how much I’d use it. I really think that it would be something that the whole family might use a little bit here and a little bit there. And that would be cool. But ‘cool’ doesn’t make it necessary.

I have reservations about buying it because I know that if I get it and like it then I’ll want the second generation iPad which will remedy all of this one’s limitations.

NYT’s David Pogue reviewed it and said (paraphrasing here): “If you think you’ll like it then you will. It’s perfect for you. If you don’t see the need for it then it’s not for you.”

wtf’s an iPad? what’s the purpose? to show how trendy one is?

by Daedalus on Apr 2, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, exactly. Here are the reasons I want one:

1] To show how trendy I am.

2] To piss you off.
