Cactus League Game 15 Thread: Reds at Giants
Travis Wood gets his first start of the spring today. Wood has pitched 7 innings of 2-hit, one-run baseball, striking out six and walking five. I'm not sure if it means anything that he is getting the start while Maloney is pitching out of the bullpen, but it's interesting. I wonder if he's still in serious consideration for the fifth starter spot. Honestly, I have no idea where the Reds are going with that role right now.
The Reds will also send Logan Ondrusek, and Mike Leake to the mound
Lineups are after the jump. Today's game is televised by the Giants and will be available on MLB.tv. It will also be available on tape delay on MLB Network at 5pm ET. Or if you want to follow along live, it is available on 700 WLW and select affiliates or on Gameday.

apparently one bad start is all it takes to knock a guy out of Dusty's competition.

the Nats sent Strasburg to AA
i like this. it gives the Reds a precedent to do the same for Chapman.

i have no idea what the Reds are doing with the fifth spot
Chapman and Wood seem like the only pitchers they care about stretching out for the 5th spot.

It's gonna be Chapman, I think.
"Red Reporter - An elitist clique full of like-minded douchebags." - BK
I think so,but Jocketty has different thoughts
I haven’t a clue on the 5th spot, but I know for sure in my mind that it isn’t Chapman. Maybe some one they pick up in a trade or just bring up whoever is doing well in the minors to see if they have the stuff for the majors.
"As we strive for excellence never forget what got you there"
I think it would be extremely foolhardy to start chapman in the majors
forget the adjustments to america, I keep seeing stuff about him adding pitches, experimenting with two-seamers and splitters. The change-up is still a bit raw in my opinion, speed differential is great and all but a 88-90 mph change up could use some work. They have made new mechanical changes with him. These are all things you want to see him work on using in the minors where he can get more than 3 starts in the first month, especially after practicing all of this only this spring. putting him in the 5th starter role to start out is way too risky in my opinion.
well stated

I've been banging this drum for a while now
I think Leake is going to be a lot better than people ’round these parts think.

Not many have given him a shot at the fifth spot this spring
And most think he’s good #3/bad #2. I think he can be a solid #1. Solid not spectacular.

I don't like the idea of giving who's only professional experiance is AFL play an MLB job.
No reason to rush him up to the big leagues, let him spend the year in AA and AAA and see where he is at late this season or next season. It isn’t as if the Reds are short on fifth spot options.

well
I know it’s only one game, but his numbers don’t look that impressive today.
I don’t think he’s making his case.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
he didn't have the best defensive support, although the 2 run hit he gave up just got left up
in the zone. Honestly, the Arroyo comparisons are very valid.
yeah, but
he’s not on the roster. I think he’d have to be massively awesome to force the Reds’ hand this early. At the very least, they’d want to wait until late May/early June, like they did with Bailey.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
yeah that was not a good pitch
for the most part though I was impressed. good downward action on his FB, and was consistently hitting the corners with his curve and his change. was throwing the ball inside well. I’m with most in that I want to see him in the minors to start out, but he does look very close to a finished product and there doesn’t seem to be a lot he would need to work on before he’s ready.

I need a bit of advice
I signed up for mlb.tv and every so often it says a game can be watched. So I click on it and it loads, then finally says “this game will be available later” or something to that effect.
Now today, on the Reds, both for the mlb and for some other station, it just sits there and spins and I get nothing. Did I get screwed by mlb.tv?
Bandwidth is not a problem.
The baseball-bat collision is violent and involves large forces which act over a very short time and which compress the ball to a fraction of its normal size. -- Alan M. Nathan
where do you live? it may be blocked if you live near cincy or sf...
it may also have something to do with the MLB network playing it on tape delay.
I live in NW Indiana, in the Chicago area. The tape delay thing
seems the best logical answer. It says I can “watch” it but nothing comes up. I guess I need to learn how to adapt to this stuff. I really don’t much care YET, until the real games start, but I did hope to get to see some of the guys in ST before they get sent back. Not that many chances, so far.

you'll be able to watch the game in about an hour when the tape delay is over, i bet.
I live in seattle and the mlb.tv deal is very cool for me. you won’t be disappointed, i recommend the premium subscription so you can use the dvr function and pause games.
I did get the premium thing and along the way
had to upgrade my modem with verizon, which was OK for about 8 bucks more a month.
So I am hoping to be very baseballed this summer.

He definitely could be
He could use a little more velocity on his fastball if he wanted to close, but he has the potential right now to be a quality setup man

also if he were to blow a save
we could say to the opposing batter: “you’ve beaten my giant which means you are exceptionally strong”
